We bought our dream home.. it's falling down! Renovating a 200 year old stone cottage.
As major demolition finally begins, it's pretty quickly halted!
As we continue to expose the 200 year old stone walls, it rapidly becomes apparent just how wonky, crumbly and well, falling over this house is.
Restoring a remote old cottage on an abandoned farm was always going to be a challenge, but what we find under the plasterboard make this challenge just that bit tougher.
We do make good progress on our off grid barn though, and our cat Summer finally gets her freedom!

there's a scrapyard on the ballysimon road in limerick. limerick metal recycle company ltd. they take copper wiring an copper piping and other scrap. there's also galway metal on the outskirts of galway city
I hope you both realize that a vast majority of us just tune in because of your bright personalities and good vibes. You shine lights. Just saying.
my wife and I renovated a 100+ year old house. Lots of frustrations, surprises and in the end happiness. Hang in, you're doing great!
Yes, I certainly agree! The little ancient house that we bought, took us 7 unplanned years to renovate and restaurate, what, with a newborn and a 6 year old and both working. Now, the house has got at least another 100 years in it now....every time we opened up a wall , a ceiling or a floor, it had to come out and be completely renewed
But at least,we kept it´s ancient character
We know that in the end it will be our little home and all the work would have been worth it
I just wanted u two know how much joy and happiness you bring to my life. I lost my partner over a year ago. He left suddenly and I have grieved a full year today. Please keep being awesome in a world where sometimes people can be so cruel and unacceptable of people with different lifestyle choices. I love how much you two love each other and help each other grow. Thanks for being yous and I look forward to more videos. ❤😊❤
It is possible you two! My husband and I are almost finished restoring a Victorian house in the USA. Im Irish. When we got here the house had NOTHING no toilets, no electric no water. I just got done learning how to reshingle a roof! You can do it!
Poor Emily! I thought she was going to cry when she saw that wonky wall 😢 You've got this girls. We know you can do and you've got each other and together you're stronger. Lovely to see both Summer and AJ are now 'free' 😊
The absolute best bit of the video was seeing Summer loose and exploring for the first time. She’s adorable.
Yes, she's the quiet child.
To say you two are well suited is an understatement.
Save all those rocks, even the little ones. Lay all out from large to small so they are easy to see for rebuilding any part of the cottage that needs it. Keep a pile of all the small bits for infill.
I love that in all th chaos Emily finds the positioning of the tyre messy 😂. I love watching someone else who likes things clean, neat and tidy. 🥰
Addicted to your channel even more so now you’re ripping your old farmhouse apart. What we’re going to do to ours in the not-so distant future…..
Same for me! Haha! Its better than tv programmes because you see the reality of it!
Thanks guys, we want to share as much as we can 😀
Addicted too. Thank you for sharing xx
June 23rd is Bonfire night in Ireland. You will see everyone burining all the rubbish that night.
I was literally just about to message them to tell them about bonfire night. Don't fill the skip up with any wooden material just yet.😊
Rock right down and started over again Lou and em
“The Flaccid Candle” sounds like the name of the pub down the road…
😂😂
😂😂
Bit like … The Flakey Tart 😂
The summer footage is wonderful xxxxx
You could fill that old tire with sand and making a great cat box .. with flowers all around it. Might be cute. Or just use it as a flower bed or garden bed. 😂❤
Love the video ladies your two very hard working ladies there's not many men do what you are doing ,RESPECT.
Thanks ted 😃
Nothing like renovation surprises…also known as The Money Pit. Sometimes old, is just old. But you ladies will make it yours because it will be a labor of your love. Happy birthday, Emily!
Thanks 😀😀
I love that film 😂
happy birthday Em ...what a hole you found . 😂
You need a wheelbarrow.
Happy Birthday Emily 🎉🎉🎉🎉
nice having a large area for your dog. but he needs plenty of play time with you both.
🎂HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO EMILY!
I love your videos you are so fun to watch and Louise’s carpentry skills are great please keep videos coming
I'm just imagining the people that did all that plasterboarding etc watching you.
me too , all that money spent sorting the old girl out !
@@janissteadman285 or covering up problems
Same 😂
Woops looks like that was a load bearing kitchen cupboard.
We bought an old Chapel the roof was falling in, no floor, the outside walls needed tying in with four steel girders and tie bars. We moved into a caravan with a baby. It took us 3 years to get it habitable and probably another 3 to finish it. We too did all the work ourselves. So easy when you are young.😊
Oh that sounds amazing
I'm 4 yrs in my garden shed as we renovate a 200 yr old cottage. Im exhausted at this stage. But no more damp and mould. !
You should get a wheel barrow to help carry those big rocks, keep up the good work
My cat brings ticks in onto my bedroom…it’s such a joy seeing them crawling toward me up the bed, just getting ready to pounce 😮 Dead mice are an even bigger treat. I’m beside myself with joy every time it happens…
Oh it’s the worst ain’t it 😫
Ticks are the only creepy crawly I'm scared of, Lyme disease. Being in Ireland we don't have ones that want to kill you but that's close enough for me!
Love your pets and love your cottage ❤
Such a beautiful video of a cat being able to roaming free in a wonderful garden.
Lovely to see AJ and Summer loving the garden space. You two are certainly not afraid of hard work. You are a joy to watch xxx
AJ is obviously saying, "YOU come out!" Remember that it's the time that you spend together that he will miss in the days ahead. hearts.
In Ireland the 23rd of June is traditionally bonfire night and lots of people have bonfires going to celebrate St John's eve. One or two of the neighbours may have a bonfire going and would be happy to help reduce your skip rubbish. Obviously the wood, cardboard and paper only though.
You two are the craziest most entertaining duo on the internet !
So glad I can watch this while away in Japan with work. I love your updates and approach to life. Keep it up. Jx
That old tire would make a wonderful planter. Clean it up and even paint it, then you can plant flowers , herbs or even vegetables 😊
Happy birthday Emily.
Good job on that barn girls. Proud of you both
As someone who has renovated an old house, that came up with some shocking surprises, one room at a time is easier on the soul! Good luck, it’s going to be gorgeous, one day! ❤
So true!
Such good content, filming and editing Give yourselves a massive pat on your backs from me.
If I don't see Emily being rolled around the garden in that tyre next week then I shall be very disappointed lol!!!!! I was willing her to get in it lol. Well done ladies you really are doing such a fab job xxxxx
😂😀😂
Happy birthday Emily loving watching you doing the renovations aj and summer loving there space
I admire your work ethic! If I had that enormous tire, I would lie it down on a chosen place, fill it with earth and grow flowers or spices for the kitchen in it! It would look amazing!
Happy Birthday Emily, you two will smash this huge project, I know you will. 😍🤩😍
I wouldn't worry too much about the 1 to 9 inch lean to the walls! - lets face it most new builds aren't much better.
Happy Birthday Em 🎉🎉
Belated Happy Birthday to Emily!!!🥂
I felt for you letting Summer out for the first time - I always hate that with our various cats
🙀
Omg that was the quickest 36 mins ever. I look forward to your videos and they whizz past. I have to watch them twice. You guys are amazing. My husband and I did this about 20 years ago to our French home. It was back breaking but so worth it. Love the channel so much thank you Lou and Em xx
Aw thank you 😀😀
@@campervibe Omg I am so scared for you girls. I thought you were just bringing the fireplace wall back to life!! Yes oh yes please get an engineer dears. Happy Birthday 🎉 Emily.
The most brilliant bit in this video, is where your dog doesn't know whether he still lives in a van, or whether he has a whole new plot of land to roam and explore, and to play in.
And, weirdly, you two are maybe at that same stage - worried about a wall which may fall down, or which you'll have to do something about.
I'd say this is a good mental and physical space to be in. The van is still there, as your home from the past, but soon you'll move into this lovely old house, and maybe the wall will always be threatening to fall down, but it can still be your new treasured space.
Keep going. It's going to be fine.
I'm a housing draughtsman and seeing the work done to the house in the past is all that could be done. You guys have a hell of a lot of work to do. There is a good reason that is causing the walls to lean out, and I fear the worst. So "Bon Courge"
Be aware of adders. They often lie under corrugated iron as it’s warm.
Bury a coin for luck somewhere in the cottage walls, I have found several over the years. One RUclipsr wrote “We are trying to contact you about your loan” under a new carpet.
I’m gonna do it
you guys are the best so glad I found you!!!!
Those giant tyres paited up make excellent flower beds, we use one as a water feature with fountain in centre.
We bought our cottage built in 1752 and as we discovered had been bodged ever since .. We had to gut it room by room , I was pulling wallpaper off in the bedroom and all the plaster instantly fell off , horse hair and all , and there were massive holes in the walls . Anyway we redid it ourselves and it took 5 years !! Damned hard work and I taught myself so many different trades I swear I could work on any building site now and we were in our late 50’s , so it can be done . ❤
I would clean that tyre up, put it in a corner somewhere, fill it with soil/compost and use it as a planter. you two are doing a great job so far.
I Was thinking the same thing about that tire being a planter,, tho it looks a realy nice size to build up with stones & liner for a natural pond erea idea 💡 too, plenty to play with 🎉
We definitely will 😀😀
Beat me to it, my thoughts entirely …a little herb planter
My Mum said the exact same 😊
Watching from thundery Canada atm! 🇨🇦 loving the content, I'd turn the tyre into a little wildlife pond or Emily size pool! Return of droopy the candle too, such fun!!😂
Just discovered your channel through Philly & Keely, and I’m really loving it! You gals are doing such a fabulous job & I’m looking forward to watching you renovating your home every week. Your cat is adorable- she looks identical to my cat 😻
I hope the engineer who comes lets you film him or her when they're doing the survey of that wall. It would be really interesting to hear their opinions and watch them pointing things out as they tell you about them!
I love following you both on your journey. The end result is going to be fantastic! Can't wait! You are both a lovely couple who work fantastically together. Yor pets are so lovely. Amazing workmanship skills. Fantastic watching. ❤😊xx
My 100+ year old cabin could not be salvaged after five months of demolition. I had no choice but to rebuild from scratch. 80 days later I have built, mostly by myself (I was 63 then) a cozy tiny house (384 sq ft) which I totally love. You can do this! I'm cheering for you from the North East Kingdom in Vermont!
Bloody amazing, well done 😀
Holy cow 9 inches!! I guessed 4 lol😅 my prayers are with y'all. My wife and I bought a derele t property a year ago .....( Held together by spiderwebs.) A year later we have made it to an enjoyable space. Not quite where we would like, of course, but still very big changes happened here. Any way. Stick with it. You two strong ladies can handle it. Nothing you can't handle. In the famous words of Larry the Cable Guy " Git Er Done" 😂
Total respect. You both are badass adventurers. And THIS is one incredible journey. Deep breaths. Carry on.
Legendary blog, you guys are hard working for sure!
You know I loved this episode. May I make a suggestion? You can do hour long shows. We'd wat h because it's awesome and interesting a fun.
😂 the lives are over an hour long 😀
Happy birthday, Emily!!
Stone walls always start really thick at the bottom and narrow to the top. It creates stability. Breeze blocks are an easy/lazy way to fix a stone wall. Ive my fingers crossed it isn’t as bad as it looks
Happy belated birthday, only just watching this as I was in hospital with sepsis and legionella pneumonia , so now on a catch up camper vibe fest. 😊
I think you guys need a construction size skip. A really big one! Save the tin for the barn roof. You could repaint that huge tire, fill it full of dirt and make it into a huge planter!?!
I now get to watch your videos twice....my folks are now hooked and filled with admiration, so I watch with them, then have to rewatch to see the bits I miss when they ask questions or discuss how amazing you both are 😊 looking forward to seeing your progress!💪🏽
You should use that tire as a planter it would look cool ..it's all looking good and love seeing the fur babies enjoying their life there xx
Happy bday fello Gemini!!
Happy Birthday Emily! One day when your both snuggled up by a roaring fire in your cottage, you'll look back at these times and realise the strength you had to overcome the knock backs. Stay strong both.
We so will 😀
if your going have a wood fire/burner and stacking the wood outside that corrugated roofing would be excellent rain cover.
I so love physical labor, I could watch it for hours. Much admiration to you two adventurous ladies - from my place in Illinois, USA. I know you will ultimately have a perfect home, built on a sturdy foundation of love. ❤❤❤
We hope so and thank you
@@campervibe What part of Illinois do you live? I am in Quincy
🤣 Me too! Shame watching it doesn't burn as many calories 🤣
@@margheriolisa Carbondale
Regarding the office room, note that you might want to colour the limestone plaster in whatever colour you want the inside of the room to be.
If you paint on the limestone plaster then it is quite likely that the plaster will come off after some years. At least that is what is happening in the house built in 1901 that I live in.
What happens is that moisture containing salt is traveling from the ground into the wall. If there is paint on the plaster then the salt crystallizes between the stone and the plaster making the plaster come loose.
If there is no paint then the salt will crystallize on the surface of the plaster and one can use a vacuum cleaner to remove it. The method using coloured limestone plaster was the recommendation from a specialist.
Thanks
I watch the Irish homestead and he found the same issue...the upper walls being pushed out. He figured it was the weight of the roof trusses doing it. So maybe swing by Sam and Bec and and have a chat. They have the same problem. Never panic, each problem is part of the fun...and honestly, you got it covered.
You could use the old tyre as a planter, seen a few in some garden centres…
Loving your sitting area. You are both doing a cracking job tidying and making it homely
If that door is still solid you could use it as you work table.
A one inch gap at the bottom and 9 inch gap at the top either means the opposite wall is also at the same angle or.... there's a 9 inch gap somewhere... You're doing the right thing in getting an engineer in. Whatever the outcome, don't lose the faith. You have got this.
Oh for sure
Always so much fun watching your videos 😃
Editing superb again. Your have a cup of tea comment reminded me of this old song...
"All right," said Fred, climbing up a ladder
With his crowbar gave a mighty blow.
Was he in trouble, half a ton of rubble landed on the top of his dome.
So Charlie and me had another cuppa tea
And then we went home.
Thank you 😀😀
Happy Birthday Emily ....and your right you and Louise are going to smash this... you go girls...
Some people use old doors for dinning room tables, and coffee tables.
And headboards
BTW all white sheets are a must, any bugs can be spotted a mile away. And white bedding for the cat.
🙌
"The NEXy Day" is here to stay 😂
Happy (belated now) Birthday Emily! ❤🎉
I've been patiently waiting for the day Summer gets to roam around the homestead - and here it is! My heart goes out to both of you for the aching muscles. I bet you're gonna go through a ton of work gloves too. Good luck on this massive project, girls!
She is loving it, out now
Just thinking about your walls….if you originally had a thatched roof then it’s likely the weight of the slate roof has pushed the walls outwards. The rafters should’ve been joined from wall to wall to create a triangle, that would prevent the walls from spreading, if that’d been done your ceiling wouldn’t need to be suspended.
Adding the organic material to the garbage seems like a really good idea to me. Compost for the dumps🤷♀️👌
Thank you. You guys are an inspiration. We bought a place in south west Scotland last December. Lots to do here too. You’d be very welcome to stay if you’re ever in the area. (Or at least pop in for a cuppa)!
Keep up the good work.
Lou you need to surprise Emily with a long weekend get away for her Birthday. It'll be good for you too. You don't have to go far ... nice park up in the woods by water sounds perfect🥰
Your genuine portrayal of 'We bought our DREAM HOME.. it's FALLING DOWN! Old stone cottage renovation.' is incredibly compelling. Your dedication to restoring a piece of history and overcoming challenges with grace and determination is truly inspiring. Your journey resonates deeply with those who value preservation and perseverance.
And I am Floating Village Life
"got the flaccid candle"..So cheeky😂. Poor Em. Louise is keeping her on her toes... constantly 😊
Happy belated birthday Emily🎉
Thank you 😀🥳
That tilting wall might be a good excuse to replace most of it with large French doors.
That way you will not have to replace most of the stone work.
I don't know about Irish panning permission but the room doesn't look that big and most of that wall could be doors instead.
It was never going to be easy but you two are such legends that I know irrespective of the challenges ahead you will overcome them with a brew and a laugh, massive love to you both x
We will get there in the end
@@campervibe absolutely you will, you are both so resilient and keep the faith the end result will be worth all your efforts x
Its funny, from the overhead views of the house, it looks pretty good, but im certain you will overcome the 'issues' that you encounter. The end result wull be an amazing home, you are both awesome ❤
Must have been a shocking realization to recognize that some of the Cabinetry is actually what was holding up the walls😮😮 you're doing a fabulous job
Hi love your video as my husband and I moved to Ireland from UK 7 years ago and renovating, land and home we still are lol. You may burn St John's night 23rd June good luck keep the faith
You two should have set yourselves an easy introduction to cottage rebuilding by designing and building a five bedroom mansion with a fountain and an attached granny flat, would have been much easier !
😂😂 where would the fun and hard work be in that 😂
You don't always need the big portable drill to remove/install screws, get a good brand power driven screwdriver with 90 degree capable handle, it's much lighter weight and narrow build allows use in tight places and not as tiring. I own the DeWalt 8V MAX Cordless Gyroscopic Screwdriver with Adjustable Handle and it's a dream to use.
Yep, got one in England. It will come over when I collect all my tools. I think I’ve mentioned this in several videos now 😂🤣
you can do it girls! If you found thatching, the weight of the ‘new’ roof could be pushing the walls out.Send lots of positive thoughts your way stay safe for your renovations and travels
Thank you 😀😀
What a great life for you all I’m enjoying your vlog
Aj & Summer will have a blast running / wandering around the Garden 😊
Aww Summer trying to get the window open , bless her 🫶.
Happy Birthday Emily 🎉.
Thanks 😀🥳
