- hahaha yeah so i'm putting the breaks on the book buying for the moment because my lord i've over done it now. this newest pile of books is more leaning towards non-fiction, which is a first for me really (if we're ignoring philosophy ofc) this is an assortment of essays, non-fiction, poetry and even practical stuff. Look at me being all evolved. Let me know what you guys are dying to read next! - EA x

Emma: "Let's break the table and remake the table."
*Daenerys Targaryen has entered the chat*
*Gasp* my first pin *ever* and it was on the Comp Lit Queen's feed! :) Excuse me while I brag a little
I can relate. I'm not much of a shopaholic, except for when it comes to books.
Buying books will forever be my kryptonite
It’s nice to see you so excited, inspired and seemingly happy. It’s a big difference from how you seemed during the lockdown. I still find it difficult to get out of it, probably cause I’m still self-quarantining. Your state of mind is a little contagious though, so thanks for that!
The only thing I hate about the vintage edition of Murakami books is that they are in two sizes. I have Men without women, the wind-up bird chronicle and Norwegian wood and Norwegian wood is smaller than the other two. It keeps me awake at night
oh no this is absolutely one of those 'size matters' things
Emma Angeline yes definitely, it’s been bugging me for ages
the allen ginsberg collection for the penguin modern classic mini thingy ‘television is a baby crawling towards that death chamber’ is beautiful i love it. especially as an introduction if you want to read howl, kaddish and other poems which is his first collection with howl ending the censorship ban in the us in terms of content and themes of literature (also watch kill your darlings (2013) with daniel radcliffe as ginsberg and dane dehaan.
The way you described finding THAT author is how I felt when I found your channel and binged TF out of your videos. Also, I too have become a book-a-holic. However, unlike you, I keep buying books before I've finished my previous pile. I worry that I won't find the same edition or I'll forget about it (even if it's written down) if I wait a reasonable amount of time... I'm also just lazy and would rather buy too many books and have them at the ready instead of making multiple mini trips.
This is ridculously true...its so annoyingly easy to justify buying books! Also I found Adichie's ideas on feminism in a modern world fascinating, really want to read her fictions.
You would really like Fahrenheit 451, it’s about how books are banned and civilisation sinks in to chaos as people rely on technology. One man finds some books and he and and the older man who remembers time with books start to change there option on the world. The people don’t know about history, they are enjoy what they have and still want more, they don’t know or care about people on other countries and cultures.
Could you please please please do a video with your favorite essays that would be so helpful!!
Ooooo that’s an interesting shout actually
Yes please do it!!!!
unrelated but the black little classics from penguin have a great collection of walt whitman called ‘on the beach at night alone’ which is also incredible
Very true. Penguin little black classics are great in general tho :)
James Baldwin also has a Penguin Modern Classic book called “Dark Days.” It is a collection of a few of his essays discussing race relations in the US. It was out of stock for some time before I could get my hands on it!
I’m sorry but the fact that you said you can feel fireworks in your brain when you talk about particular topics and that you have many passions that makes me think you have adhd even more now 😭 because that’s exactly what adhd is
I know that you said "no more recommendations!!!" but you should definitely read Flush by Virginia Woolf and East Is East by Ayub din Khan... both have social commentaries brilliantly integrated into them and I have a feeling that you will love them (especially because they are super thin! )
Also just finished "The Master's Tools" and loved it! Really want to read more of Lorde now :)
i finished it a couple days ago isnt she incredible??
Having to rearrange your bookshelves because you buy too many books is something that happens way too often for me. Also love Audre Lorde I read a collection of her work called Your Silence Will Not Protect you which has some of her essays and poetry and ioved it read the whole thing in two days now you are making me want to buy more of her work. Buying books is the one thing I have little impulse control with. I should not be allowed in bookshops unsupervised.
I just placed an order for 5 of the Penguin Great Ideas last week. I now have another cart full of Montaigne, Rousseau, Homer, Descartes, Seneca etc. You are most definitely to blame.
Also, could you please do a favourite books video?
Looks like I have some new ones to add to my list, I need to check out Lorde's poetry. I'm currently reading Things Fall Apart. We read Heart of Darkness back in school and I really wish we had read Achebe instead. Also I love Murakami, I've bought so many of his books even though I've only gotten through a couple of them so far. Also please continue to go on mini tangent rants about the different things you love because even if I know very little about what you're talking about or don't enjoy it myself, I love hearing others talk passionately about what they love.
this is exactly what i needed after the day i had. u talking about books will forever be my favorite thing and honestly all i really want right now is getting wine drunk and talking books with anyone (preferably u tho) so thanks for that hahah
My favourite Orwell is Down and Out in Paris and London, which is semi autobiographical. Toooootally recommend! (I will read his essays as per your rec too)
Me, too!
Also I just realised you said not to recommend you books oops sorry 😂
I just bought it and can't wait to read it!
You're not boring when talking about running/editing/non classic books. I also like your editing (and i drop Casey Neistat- if that's serves as a compliment).
You're right, editing is crucial, it's the breathing of a film. Recent great editing works : Whiplash, Fincher's last three (TGWADT's montage is sick) Birdman, No country for old man , and many others..
mindhunter absolutely slaps!! also you're making me want to read some more essays! i barely read any non-fiction, but i read what i talk about when i talk about running in june and enjoyed it so i should definitely branch out and read some more
I was reading The Plague by Camus when you compared Camus with Beckett in a video. Directly after that video, I bought The End by Beckett and the change of perspective on death and sorrow was really special to me. I loved both Beckett's stories and I'm now trying to live by what you said in the video "Don't be a Camus, be a Beckett". Many thanks for that rec :)
It’s not like this just made my day and I’m totally not gonna curl up later with eight fans and an ice pack and add pretty much all of these books to my wish list
build a wall of books between u and the heat
Emma Angeline a book igloo
Those penguin mini modern classics are dangerously addictive
So nice to hear you speak of poems and poets. I have always admired poets and their poems. I try to write a few myself. ☺️
@reallybadpoetry on Twitter is hilarious.
Keep the niche books coming, half of booktube read the same 30 books as each other every week.
And The Wind Up Bird Chronicle is my favourite Murakami, it seems critically popular too. So good and absolutely batshit in a good way.
I knew of the mini black penguins but not the mini penguin modern classics! There's even a box set!!! I need them immediately.
Hyped to hear your thoughts on Things Fall Apart
i picked up norweigan wood during lockdown and now im obsessed with murakami (especially his more contemporary work)
i need that shade of lipstick in my life
If you have not already seen it watch "Ciao Manhatten" as you are interested in the Andy Warhol scene.
I WISH I COULD COME TO AN ANDY WARHOL EXHIBITION WITH YOU maybe in December (if I can come back) we could see some art? As both of us are not fans of contemporary? Just an idea?
Please do more videos on books like "Never split the difference", love these kind of books as well
so many good recommendations!
i really love the way you make videos in cute and funny way 😇🙌🌻❤
idk if you already know them but i really recommend watching The Art Assignment on RUclips!
Hey Emma, which app do you use for running? 🧡

Emphasis on "rebuild the table" - the system is fcked and replacing the men in charge with women in charge, within the same system, will recreate the same.
