Im thinking whether I should go for this brand new at £130 quid off amazon or a pre owned iphone 8 plus which is £130 but refurbished with 12 months warranty
That's a tricky call, whilst I'm not personally an iPhone fan, I appreciate they're a good bit of kit. I'm biased, but I'd go with the Samsung, if nothing else, to get the latest security updates - whereas with the older iPhone, sooner or later Apple will drop iOS support for it.

Did you get any software or security updates
I was able to fully update it, and it will continue to receive security updates.
