As much as we riders love 555 it is in the middle of a primarily agricultural section of Ohio. The farmers that live on that road are using it with farm equipment coming off the fields to earn a living. We are guests on that road. I enjoy riding it but know the risks.

There is nothing more fun than meeting a combine with a 28’ cutter head on a 24’ road, in the middle of a curve! Rural Kansas this time of the year that is a regular happening…

No matter who is hauling shit on the road they still have an obligation to maintain their load. Scattering gravel and rocks every where makes it a hazard to everyone. They are not properly securing their load and creating dangerous riding and driving conditions for everyone. BTW, if you pay taxes you have every right to be on the roads, they're not private.

Love riding in SE Ohio! So lovely...and challenging. It's the blind turns after a summit that I hate about the 555. It's not...fun. Now, 78 east from Ringgold and through McConnellsville then through the Wilds up to Cumberland or Chandlersville is a fabulous ride.

Rode the 555 a month or so ago. Made a little vacation out of it. Spent a night in Zanesville, got up early and rode down to the river, cut over to Marietta and back up 60 to Zanesville again and spent another night before riding home. It was a fun ride and not much traffic on a Friday. Was back at the hotel by 3 or 4. Nice day ride. I ride a Ryker so don't worry so much about the gravel but I didn't really see that much. Especially didn't see large rocks like this.

Just did the 555 today for the first time. Yes, the saloon is a great biker dive bar with shirts and patches. The road is bipolar. The hills and curves seem to be blessed by the biker gods but the road conditions suck! Gravel, horse shit, gravel, tree branch, gravel, crab apples, more gravel. It’s hard to enjoy a road you’re trying to survive. Great video

I have rode the North section several times until about 2 months ago. I made it a point to ride the whole thing from North to South. Encountered minimal gravel. I do think there is a quarry just off of the 555. Newly paved section and a dog sunning itself in the road. FYI. The Zanesville Harley store had 555 merch and riding over the "Y" bridge was kinda cool

Hey Jess , the 555 is a great road , my son and I rode it at the end of June after riding the tail a week earlier . We started where you did in Zanesville and road to Little Hocking and loved it , you do have to pay attention for the blind off camber turns at the top of a hill and there was some gavel but no boulders when we rode it. I set the cruse for the first bit and was wondering what everyone was talking about..... then I found out, I am ready to go back , its a hard days ride from St. Louis .
Keep up the good work and go back and ride the whole thing though it is worth it .

Bob and I were down in SE Ohio the last week of July also in 2021 the same week. Rode the triple nickel a few times. Some gravel no rocks like you encountered . Must of been a gravel truck going through. We tried stopping by the Triple Nickel Saloon but it was closed. Love the Windy 9 roads down there. I was talk ing to the woman who heads up the Athens Windy 9 tourist center down there has been trying to reach out to you but hasn’t gotten a response from you. Planning on going down there next year as well. Looked like a great day to ride.

I did that route 555 last year from south to north. An all day downpour made it unfun. The gravel and dirt at intersections was pretty slippery. Worse was the blind turns after the crests. Like that fun feeling of weightlessness then an 'o crap' blind turn. Did the same 20 miles you did again 2 weeks ago. I was staying in Wheeling WV and broke off and had to head back east because it was getting late. Believe it was Ohio 37, off the Nickel.

Jess, my wife and I rode The Triple Nickle twice this summer, once in June on our Can Am Spyders and again in September and she was on a Can Am Ryker. We did not see that much gravel and no large rocks at all. If we did, we would've turned around too as you did. Both were great rides, the full length too. I think the last portion is more challenging then the first. I hope you get time to ride the whole length. We also stopped at The Triple Nickle Diner too... it's about half way? We also stopped to let 2 waves of sports cars pass us and saw other groups of bikes going the other way - very popular road! Beautiful country side and nice people. We plan to return next season to ride it on our Harleys.

You're totally right. When the road is so rotten that it's no fun, why go?
You'll be happy to know that this judgment changes with the circumstances. For instance the Himalayan might feel better, with its quick swerves and narrow tires. It might also be less disturbed by hitting a rock.
Also, if you had days to do it, it might seem less hectic.
I've turned back several times. Both times involved road suspension that couldn't follow the crazy bumps or loose surfaces. Once I didn't have a low enough gear to get through without burning the clutch.

Running West Virginia route 219 northbound with two of my friends this past weekend, at the base of a sharp turn we hit a dump of gravel. I hit it first and after my bike kicked out 8-12 inches I hollered into my SENA but the guys did not have time to react and they each had their bikes kick out. When we got to a rest stop, there were a group of bikers there talking about the same gravel and how close to losing it they were. Chances we take. Stay safe and keep the shiny side up!

The dragon is what you make of it and it is a really fun ride. Early in the morning is best but there are so many great rides around it and so many towns like Andrews North Carolina. I don't think I will ever get through all the rides I have in my back yard to get to many outside of Tennessee. Not a bad problem to have by the way. Have fun in Florida.

You can schedule a service in the middle of a ride. I scheduled the 20k service on my Road King in the middle of an 8300 mile ride. I prescheduled it in Rapid City, SD and then rented an Ultra Classic for a day and rode the Black Hills (a month after Sturgis).
I can ride most roads with only one hand. People that wanna freak about that need some seat time.
I will admit, I do judge helmetless and gearless people a little. I'm all in favor of freedom, but man... dress for the slide, not the ride. If you've gone down, you understand. And remember, it's not a matter of IF you'll go down, but WHEN.
The tree of shame at Deals Gap is covered with parts of bikes that crashed. Why did they crash? They were riding like Ricky Racer. NEVER overdrive your sight lines. Those that crashed went wide cuz they went in too fast.
Those rocks here and there are definitely WEIRD, but I think they were a rare, one time thing.
You should do the entire 555. It's a paved road. It's not like it's a BDR. You have more than enough experience. You did fine. Treat the rocks like potholes.

I've rode it many times. There are always hazards at some point in the road. It's an area with active farms and other agricultural related things. You just have to ride it like you have some sense and you'll be ok.
There are numerous roads connected to it and near it that are great too.

There are many winding roads in western NC that are known for having loose gravel in curves. Rumor has it that locals do this to slow traffic, to discourage motorcyclists and to reduce congestion.

How do you like rinding on the bagger compared to the R18 FE? I have to say I love the looks!
    Thanks for the video!

Looks like a fun road minus the shot rock! You should come to the adirondacks and green mountains for a ride. Some of the best riding in the northeast! Im sure you've been to laconia right? So you've passed through if that's the case, but you should land in lake george, NY and do a ride here! I happen to know alot of great roads👍

They Tate and chip roads like Pennsylvania does. It leaves loose gravel everywhere.

I now live in Florida, but we would meet at the Harley shop in zanesville and ride the 555 down to the river then come back state rout 60 back to ZANESVILLE. Man what a good day of riding. Keep up the good work.😎

Just spent 5 days in the Athens area riding. 555 is great, but there are a lot of blind curves and the cagers tend to take their half out of the middle. Throw in gravel and about 50 turtles and it's not the place to push your speeds. It is most definitely more dangerous than the Dragon.

I agree. The road had some seriously unexpected curves

I live 1 mile from the south end of 555. I have rode it many times. There is always gravel in the turns from cars getting off the edge and dragging it into the road. I have stayed off 555 the last few years. Cars from the Cutler/ Bartlett area drive as fast and hard as they can go here on the south end. They cross the centerline in blind turns without a thought of another car or motorcycle coming at them that they can’t see until it’s to late. The road itself is a good ride . I have been riding motorcycles over 30 years and now stay off 555 because of the other drivers.

The Triple Nickel my brother and I found by accident. We were riding the southeast area of Ohio and it was time to head back to the motel in Zanesville. So we figured let's take this road off of route 7 and head back.
Wow! What a find! So good we went back the opposite way to the river and came back up again.
    A must for any rider.

Rode this with a small group in early July after a trip to hillbilly hotdogs. There was no gravel at all headed north. Southbound side had a couple washout though that could be trouble headed south.

I was born and raised in Columbus and I refuse to ride that road... I did it once in my car and tore up the front end from rocks and gravel... I'd much rather ride 68 from washington courthouse down to Ripley. cool ride not nearly as curvy and fun but it's a pretty ride and there used to be some good diners and bars along the way.
