- Breaking news: Book launch of Frank Furedi's latest book cancelled by Brussels bookstore.
Free speech is under threat in the heart of the EU. Piola.libri, a bookstore on Rue Franklin in the Schumann area, has abruptly cancelled the planned launch of Furedi's book "The War Against the Past".
Despite having agreed to host the event on Monday 30 September, the venue withdrew its offer, citing concerns about the "political connotation" of the launch and the bookstore’s commitment to being an “inclusive space”.
"It is ironic that just a stone's throw away from the European Commission, a bookstore frequented by EU insiders has declared that some books are simply too dangerous to be given space. It is deeply ironic that the bookstore cited a commitment to “inclusivity” - whilst taking the decision to exclude certain viewpoints from consideration. This incident reveals the deeply censorious nature of the EU bubble and the hypocrisy that exists and thrives in Brussels and Belgium."

In his latest and highly-acclaimed book, Professor Furedi explores the cultural crusade against history, where the past is increasingly dismissed as “toxic”. The book, published by @politybooks, has received widespread praise from some of Europe and America’s leading intellectuals, including Jonanthan Haidt Nigel Biggar Robert Tombs and Lord Sumption.
Details of the book were shared with the bookstore prior to them agreeing to host the event.
What did the bookstore say?
“After a careful consideration, we have found out that the political connotation of the initiative is more strongly marked than we initially understood … Our venue has always maintained a line of neutrality … this choice allows us to ensure an inclusive space that respects all sensibilities”
MCC Brussels is committed to defending free speech and has secured an alternative venue for the book launch, which will be revealed shortly.

I take it that you initially agreed the book launch with the shop, then at some point later they decided they wouldn't do it. I wonder what happened between the points in time.
Let's just say it was nobody's business at all unless and until the bookshop itself denounced the author. How could it be otherwise? Then the question is: under what sort of dependencies does the bookshop labour such that by publicising this book, they need to fear for their future?

Belgian here. There is so much rotten in this country that you would not even know where to start to clean the rot. And this is the country of Jacques Brel and of legendary bookshop owner Mathieu Corman whose life reads like one of the countless forbidden novels he smuggled into his 'heaven for critical readers' !! I read about same kind of disgrace in Germany, where a German author's very critical book was forbidden to be displayed in the country's big 'mainstream friendly' bookshops. Have all my support, Mr Furedi!

Bruegel lived in both Antwerp and Brussels and in the former the great printer Christopher Plantin had his premises broken into and all the presses removed while he was away in Paris. There is even a suggestion that Bruegel's wife had been instructed by her dying husband to burn some of his work in case she, similarly, was accused of some sort of sedition after his death and no defence by himself. Tragic.
Piola.libri should have taken the sensible position and held the Furedi promotion and advertise it as banned by the Government. That would have allowed its citizens the choice of attendance and purchase or non-attendance and non-purchase. Cancellation was wrong and against the history of books and publishing.
What German book ?
I am not totally sure about the title of that book.The author stated that main street bookshops did willingly remove his book from their shop windows or did not display it over there. I watch many German YT channels and read the German press. I looked it up but did not write it down. I will write Frank Furedi' s title down ... in case of. There is that book 'Der geheime Krieg gegen Deutschland' of which I can imagine the elites would have loved to do that. Alas, that is merely a guess. I cannot confirm. A few days ago, as I was walking home from grocery shopping, I was musing about the war being waged on our history and about a whole generation growing up with no past, and no cultural identity. And here we are, someone has actually written a book on it! Fantastic! Will definitely be getting it.

After watching this video, I purchased the Kindle edition of your book so that I could read it straight away. I have lived in Hungary for almost 20 years and am grateful for the freedoms I enjoy in this wonderful country I call home. I am appalled at this disgraceful behaviour and I encourage you not to be discouraged. Keep up the good work.
A great book and well worth reading - but I wonder Frank if you could speak to the publishers and lower the price. At £17.99 on kindle or £19.05 for the book could put it beyond the affordability range of many. Just a thought.

The MCC is a private college with close ties to the far-right government of Hungary. It is sponsoring the publication and launch of the Furedi book. I'm not saying that the book must be banned or the book launch cancelled. But the people behind this effort are politically unsavoury types who promote such causes as war, imperialism, racism, and the oppression of women. Opposition to this book is not by any means confined to the "far left" (whatever that means).
Interesting how one can be critical of a book that questions why is the establishment is critical of anyone learning about past atrocities by the plutocrats when current colonial atrocities are happening right in front of our eyes.

Conservatives nowadays not only have to combat prejudices from the left, but on top of that the prejudices caused by the weaponizing of the information space by Russia. The MCC as a Hungarian institute is in a tough spot there, with Hungary being a Russian proxy. Tough times for conservatives. But the work remains as important as ever, keep up the quality! The EU needs it - even if most don't realize that.

Many US bookstores will not sell consevative books, or they will not display them. Has been going on for years. Local library, the same.

I'm not surprised. I'm Belgian and here you can't find almost anything that would contradict the official version of all that Belgium did in Congo. Even the access to the archives (most of them have been conveniently burnt btw...) is under control. You must sign a discharge that basically forbids you to publish anything that goes against their interests. Belgium is not a democracy at all, it's a nice place to live in if you shut up though.
