Renault debuted a static show prototype Avantime on their stand at the Goodwood FOS in '99 or 2000...It was a really striking design back then, which took the Espace concept to another level.
So at Goodwood, myself & my father were looking at the car together & both admiring & being complimentary of it, & a chap stood next to us who was looking & listening to us also, so being polite we said to him "& what do you think of it...?"
This quiet, unsuspecting man smiled & replied "I really do like it, but then I would say that because I designed it"...!!! It was none other than Patrick Le Quement himself...! 👌🙏🇫🇷👍

@@TimLemonnI don’t think that follows at all. Toyota also has truly enormous fixed costs and one could argue that, with low profit margins, if they got even one strategic thrust wrong, it could be very damaging for them.
I think VAG is engaged in deliberate corporate suicide, as are several other Western car brands.
Porsche will survive, as will all traditional luxury brands. They’re low volume, extraordinarily expensive cars and the kind of people who order these simply don’t do recessions.
Most of the high volume traditional brands are going to die or radically downsize, with state or EU assistance, over the next five years.
When you understand the destination, you can more readily see the journey.
The destination is The Great Reset. UN2030 SDGs. You weren’t aware of these? Really not? Or you were, but you somehow didn’t think they were serious about it?

Having been a devout petrolhead for many decades, I believe I've observed the rise of the greatest forces for blandness in cars across the years, and what are they? Accountants, and computers! Bean counters will always bleed the fun out of everything they touch, and computers make blandness a direct by-product of CAD and aerodynamics. When Sir William Lyons designed the stunning Jaguars of the 1950s by the light in his garden, art was paramount. My first car was a 1971 SuperBeetle 1600cc. Perhaps my last vehicle will be my 2007 VW EOS 2.0Turbo? I know, the EOS didn't sell well but I love it, top down in the summer, full hard top for thje winter! The beetle wasn't good for our Northern Canadian wintersI have also owned 2 Chevrolet Turbo Sprints that were cheap as heck but much like my Superbeetle, except no smell of gas in the car? I still have the Beetle & I would buy another turbo Sprint in a heartbeat for my 18 year old son. Quirky cars keep motoring interesting! Keep Up The Great Content!!

As a petrolhead since I can remember I couldn't agree more.
In recent years I've had my dream cars Volvo 480s which are quirky and unfortunately problematic...as such I currently feel almost guilty for driving a Juke but I needed a car that just did a job.
I try to find something endearing or atleast understand every car I own and relate to it on a deeper level, maybe that's just me. Will I ever love it? Probably not but it works.
I wish we just had more petrol heads in important places, the last time I fully agreed with a car company ethos was Dacia and the no frills Sandero as it was what it said on the tin!

Interesting, reflective episode, JM. We can't really drive fast on UK roads any more, well, much more than a minute or two before speed limits or cameras appear. So let's go for slow and quirky, boxy, weird and practical, the Japanese have nearly all the history on this, there must be some scope in our urban spaces for sensible but weird. Not all great cars are fast. The R4L was one of the great icons and I preferred scudding about in that to spending all my time in a Boxster S driving at 40mph behind traffic wishing I was somewhere else.

Great video as ever James, and I agree that we need the boring "shopping trolley" cars to provide every day reliable service. I would just like to caveat that up to around 15 years ago a large number of those "shopping trolley" cars like the afore mentioned Ford Focus were really good fun to drive, and also relatively comfortable, refined and inexpensive to repair and maintain.
But as the motor manufactures have mostly their identities (and spines), all they seem able to turn out is oversized, heavy, complicated and shapeless efforts of mediocrity that are all to often unreliable and costly to put right (particularly when they catch fire).
Then there's this arms race of power and grip and never ending electronic aids to help the keen but average driver behind the wheel stay on the straight and narrow, but the laws of physics are finite, and these cars are mostly devoid of any real sense of feel or theatre at sensible everyday speeds, so consequently they often are not driven at sensible everyday speeds.
I think that Jeremy Clarkson hit the nail on the head and said what a great many of us are thinking, that the e.v. is fundamentally a white good, they can never have the spirit, charm or longevity (in their current iteration) of an i.c.e. car (it saddens me to see classic's we know and love being "retrofitted"). I don't want to bash the e.v. to much, whilst they're not my speed they do have their upsides, it's just the upsides would be much more apparent if they were powered by hydrogen and not by heavy, expensive often explosive and difficult to recycle battery's that need replacing. Hydrogen could also be used in a type of e-fuel which all i.c.e. cars can run on.
To sum up, we need to go back to a time when each car maker had their own identity, we reembrace the estate and m.p.v. and not keep buying these inappropriate and/or unnecessary cars that promise a lot but all to often fail to deliver. And finally all those concerned (governments, car makers and legislators alike) figure out the way for e.v.'s and i.c.e. cars to coexist because like it or not we need both.
    P.S.
It's can't all be our fault James - if they don't make it we can't buy it.
    Keep up the great work!

You are spot on, James! Interesting cars still exist in some places, like here in the Philippines. We are not talking about mainstream brands. There is a company called Porto Coeli (literally "Gate of Heaven" in Latin) that imports CKD Suzuki Kei cars, vans and pickups, assembles them locally, converts them to left hand drive, and customises the exterior and interior of the vehicles. You want a small front wheel drive hatchback that can fit up to eight or nine Filipinos at a pinch? It's called the Wago R. You want a 4x2 or 4x4 van or dual cab pickup? They are called Multicabs. A top trim level Multicab 4x4 van or dual cab pickup has touchscreen entertainment, custom seat upholstery, five speed automatic transmission, room for eight or nine Filipinos, folding rear seats in both the second row and troop carrier style in the rear luggage compartment, alloy wheels, off road tyres, a snorkel, side and rear steps, sliding rear doors on both sides, a roof rack, fog lights, and custom front grille design. All of these vehicles are different to the average. They are also made in single cab pickup and "Transformer" styles. The latter is a single cab pickup with a partial canopy over the tray and troop carrier style seating on either side of the tray. All of these vehicles come standard with Suzuki's venerable 660cc three cylinder engine found in their Japanese Kei cars. The 4x4 and 4x2 Multicabs have the turbocharged version of that engine. Yes, the same one that is found in the entry level Caterham 170. I know it costs around thirty thousand UK pounds. Here, we can have one of those 4x4 Multicabs for 399,000 Philippine Pesos. I'm not sure how much that is in UK pounds, however it's around $10,000 AUD. That obviously means less than ten thousand pounds. The idea is to provide something affordable, interesting, and fit for family or business or recreational use. Ticks all the boxes. When finances allow, my wife and I will buy one. I think we'll go for a 4x4 Multicab van. If you wanted to check them out, you can Google "Multicab CDO". We live in Cagayan de Oro City Mindanao.

What seems to be "prophetic" was its name..."Avantime" ...as its name says it, unknowingly, it was a car well ahead of its time.... They took the idea of a standard hatchback , a type of car very common those days.... Mixed it with some Coupe vibes to make look more interesting, cool and modern... And made it more spacious inside than both of those to make it more practical than those... Brilliant... Sadly, it was so clever nobody understood it by those times....
I remember seeing its prototype at an international car show... everyone was stunned seeing it.....masses of people gathered around taking pictures next to it.... So Renault decided to produce it thinking they would buy it.... then, when available for sale, all people got back to their daily business and kept buying same old common cars
... This car was Like an Einstein that would preach his famous theories during medieval times... They would have gathered all around him amazed and stunned .... Then would have gotten back to their ox cart 😅
    Sad...
When they tried to make good cars, nobody bought them... Now they ( as many other manufacturers) stuck to making mass produced cheaply made over expensive common cars, all jus full of shiny bits to catch the eye and nothing more
Now we complain why there are so many unreliable cars and why so expensive... Let alone the carbon footprint laws that make cars even more overcomplicated and atrociousely unreliable
The biggest irony is, had this car been lounched today, when cars are commonly bigger and taller as it was too, and many weird designs just to catch the eye with shiny bits, are deja common on the streets, ... This car would have been well sold today... They just lounched it 20 years too early 😆

French cars always make me smile and they are always comfortable and, all have their own little quirks.
As for Renault and interesting models, how about the Espace with the real F1 engine in it?
Had many Renault cars, a 14 TS with rear wheels further apart than the front and also at different lengths from the front. But that was in the days when they did sensible things like put the spare wheel over the engine and made parcel shelves fold into the rear seat back so it stowed itself. Renault 5’s were just good fun especially the first generation TS that lifted a rear wheel for fun. They created the first car with key operated central locking, the 14, the first remote locking with a key fob, the Fuego.
Now their cars never need you to touch the key card to unlock at all and they lock themselves when you walk away. So clever and, very useful.
Now my Austral is a mere 1.2 3 cylinder hybrid that never fails to amaze me with its over 60mpg every day without making and effort to go for economy, or the fact when I filled up today, first time this month, the range was then 760 miles! That’s greener than any electric car!

The MG Cyberster, whilst being probably best described as somewhere between adequate and decent, seems to be appealing to those who know the brand for 2 seaters - I sadly can't call it cheap or dynamic, .but it's visually not a munter, and isn't a 2.5 ton monstrosity on stilts calling itself an MGB.

The Avantime - a brilliant car! I had one as a family car for 11 years. When the boys were very young you could feed them directly into their seats just by opening the windows! We took it to France one year and bumped into a chap who was involved in the project - he said it was a shame they never go to do a facelift one. Mine was the 3l Auto Dynamique; amazing on the motorway, wafty! I do think an EV conversion could make good use of some of the wasted space in it. It's a shame that most of the interior surfaces (and very few switches) have now turning to goo..... Flawed, but brilliant car.

There is nothing wrong with ICE vehicles, they do not damage the environment. For instance, the modern cars driven in Los Angeles actually make air purification better!!!!!!! This 'EV' malarky is the biggest con in history!!! PS. Good to see you driving 'dadcars' Renault! Did he get all the glitches fixed before he loaned you it bud??? LOL! Keep up the good work! Boring cars and colors are better for off-lease sales because they appeal to a wider audience. So manufacturers are making decisions that are best for their dealers. Vehicles that are too individualized have narrower appeal. Simple as that. However, the consumer push-back on EVs has been brutal. Demand is nil and resale is peanuts. Unless there are big breakthroughs in battery technology the future of EVs is bleak.

The problem with quirky cars is that they simply don't sell. We admire others who buy them ( the few who do ) but never do ourselves. They do not build "brand values" anymore - if no one buys them, they just lose the companies a lot of money. The bean counters are, in this instance, correct.
