Another home run for Spurlock. I have had a one-on-one conversation with this guy and he is just as kind as he seems. He is always willing to try new things, which is why he is mega successful at everything (even his fails).
Love Morgan Spurlock. He is a much needed and unique spotlight on society. I can't wait until his new movie is released. I loved 'Super Size Me'. If you haven't seen that one it is worth it.
Morgan Spurlock, the mindful, playful, risk taker, facing fears to bring us transparency. to one who has approached corporations to invest in my brand, to promote their brand, this talk was spot on and revealed a lot about big corporations and their ad agencies.
Just wanna say big ups to EMC^2. They are a great company that pretty much no one knows about, but are one of the big reasons why we are able to watch RUclips, and use Google. Much appreciation....
That was fantastic. I tend towards to the jaw dropping and fascinating on TED but as we all know, you always end up in a great place where your mind is bettered. This film was one of those things that just had a smile on my face the whole way through. Maybe not for the best reasons- but a smile nonetheless. Morton Spurlock is a very savvy young thing!...:-)
I think Morgan has a good point: When you really want to be in charge of your own life, its a good plan to take action. Let go your own truth, let go the advertisers truth. Don't believe anyone or anything. Just live your passion and act.
Spurlock always seemed to bother me for some reason, but this talk showed a side of him I like. Even if I felt the exact same way after watching, he presented a lot of entertaining and useful insight.
its the best talk ever sold. If you would watch the video you would know that this was the only talk where the title was sold. Therefore it is the best ever sold as it is the only one ever sold.
His advertising movie idea was actually done recently! Taladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby", and it was a huge success. Maybe what he was missing was the story and the comedy.
17:06 >"...not bad for a project that almost every Ad Agency we talked to advised their clients not to take part" I think perhaps the underlying point of the whole project was that line, which kindof brings into question the whether the advice an Ad Agency gives to it's clients is REALLY in the client's best interest or not. He's hitting the agencies where they will be forced to pay attention: their income stream. The documentary is merely a weapon to achieve this strategic strike Good work.
Cable TV companies said "TV works by selling ads; pay for cable up front and we won't need to show ads!" They didn't "need" to, but within 5 years cable had more ads/hour than normal TV. Once upon a time we had ad-free access to email, FTP, usenet, gopher, and web through ISPs and BBSs. Then AOL 'marketized' the net. Some things got better, some worse, some disappeared. Ads are arguably a necessary evil now, but there's a whole world of options between ads and "no one has ever heard of you".
Everyone applauds the absence of advertising in San Paulo as the man giving the presentation stands in from of a giant "TED" logo/sign/branding element.
Can someone be so kind to write here what Spurlock asked to the corporate man at @5:00 , just after the other guy tells "The respons mostly will be no"? I really do not understand that w/o subtitles xD thx :)
Actually it wasn't against all advertising. For instance, the sponsors of his Sundance film are listed in the credits. I guess you could say it's pro responsible advertising and also getting rid of the middleman between artist and company. Advertising itself can and is in some cases a very valuable thing.
@Danraemon It's because they were marketing and PR people, their whole job is to manage the company's image. They take it very seriously, and normally give a lot of thought to any public statement they make, to avoid things coming back to bite them in the arse. ie: to avoid PR risks. To have to make a sudden statement about what their product was all about, was unexpected. They had to very quickly try to sum up Morgan's possible motives, intentions and expectations before giving an answer.
A little word-up note to Morgan: At 15:59 in the video, you called Sao Paolo, Brazil "San Paolo". Since it's the 3rd largest city in the world, you might consider learning to pronounce its name correctly.
If you watch the film it explains why it is important to be aware of how advertising can be used, for good and for bad. It was a decent movie and fun to watch but I like documentaries and things that educate me, especially when the subject seems boring and ends up being essential info to have...
@Rhaabjorn A lot of those ads try to associate the brand with lifestyles. "Oh you like fun and don't take things too seriously? We're like that too! Look we made an Ad for people like you coz that's how we fun people roll amirite?"
@kev3d I'm not talking about going back to a direct barter system, money came into play to replace that and render that system obsolete. You don't seem to know about the system i'm mentioning, it's not about trading things. Let me respond to your example: In this world, there are no table-makers, only few table engineers, and they work because it's the field they like to improve. Machines make the "stuff", food and necessities people need are available (they are free). Automation replaces labor
That's the point, Capitalism is the basis of the current business practice today so I say that it's not necessarily an "attack" on Capitalism but a very insightful contemplation of the cons and pros(if there are any) of Capitalism mainly in the sub-topic that is branding in general.
When I googled transparency it was the 6th image on the first page.... I didn't believe it when he first said it.. then I remembered you can google almost any word and find something naked on the first page.
Training employees to be risk-takers and not be afraid of opportunities that might scare them: The philosophy of Wallstreet. As seen, it's a great way to lose someone else's money.
@captvanhalen Morgan's intention is to educate & enlighten us(after we pay $9 at the box office),so, yes, he should pronounce the city's name correctly, otherwise how do people know where it is? I heard a few interviews with him years ago and he referred to the (then)president of Mexico as Vincente. His name is Vicente. Mexican filmmakers & media people can pronounce the name or the US president perfectly, but Morgan seems to have a block about that kind of thing. Morgan is a videographer.
Another home run for Spurlock. I have had a one-on-one conversation with this guy and he is just as kind as he seems. He is always willing to try new things, which is why he is mega successful at everything (even his fails).
This guy is so personable... i could listen to him all day.
*continues to adore morgan spurlock for even more reasons*
Was that Earnest Hemingway at 11:32 ?
Foundn this in my recommended and thats the first time i see someone famous that has no likes or replies
Love Morgan Spurlock. He is a much needed and unique spotlight on society. I can't wait until his new movie is released. I loved 'Super Size Me'. If you haven't seen that one it is worth it.
This guy is such a character. I don't really know, he just has this aura about him.
6:40 ... pause video > google images > transparency > disappointment
I saw the movie and I'll be honest, all the product placements and brands who took place in this movie earned my respect X1000.
out of 1 TED talks that have been ever sold, this one is the greatest.
Morgan Spurlock, the mindful, playful, risk taker, facing fears to bring us transparency. to one who has approached corporations to invest in my brand, to promote their brand, this talk was spot on and revealed a lot about big corporations and their ad agencies.
Thank you TED, Morgan Spurlock & everything out there who's efforts made this possible :) Good job.
Great video from Morgan Spurlock. Branding is such an important component to business.
Coming from an different angel gives you the chance to surprise people. Morgan is able to this over and over. Great
Just wanna say big ups to EMC^2. They are a great company that pretty much no one knows about, but are one of the big reasons why we are able to watch RUclips, and use Google. Much appreciation....
Morgan is a remarkable artist. Blows me away with every project.
Can't stop watching ted talks :) Very interesting talks.
That was fantastic.

one of the best ted talks I've seen yet
what i like about this video is there is no advertisement...!
morgan is an awesome guy! i'd love to see a film about the true nature of marketing and the process behind it.
Great talk. Interresting, well illustrated, and puts focus on important points in a way and scale not seen many other places.
*like*
A great TEDTalk! Im eagerly waiting to get to see the documentary :)
Spurlock always seemed to bother me for some reason, but this talk showed a side of him I like. Even if I felt the exact same way after watching, he presented a lot of entertaining and useful insight.

That city with no ads looks pretty awesome
Great talk! I believe that Mr Bill Hicks had some rather pointed advice for people in traditional marketing too.
His advertising movie idea was actually done recently! Taladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby", and it was a huge success. Maybe what he was missing was the story and the comedy.
17:06 >"...not bad for a project that almost every Ad Agency we talked to advised their clients not to take part"

Good work.
he is awesome, i love the way he present his talk...
Making out that check in the ending: Mindful AND Playful

This guy is absolutely amazing.
never watched this guy's mcdonalds movie, thought it was kinda stupid... this, is probably one of the best talks I've seen
How did you come to that conclusion without watching the film?
I didn't even know this film existed before now! Definitely gona watch it
rarely do people stand up in ovation to TED speakers. Amazing
beautiful presentation.
Great speech. Good luck on the transparency thing.
a standing O...not many TED TALKS end that way
Why doesn't this talk have better ratings? I thought it was really insightful.
Actually it wasn't against all advertising. For instance, the sponsors of his Sundance film are listed in the credits. I guess you could say it's pro responsible advertising and also getting rid of the middleman between artist and company. Advertising itself can and is in some cases a very valuable thing.
EMC is not a fake umbrella company. They are a successful server farm that owns a good portion of VMC and are listed on the stock exchange.
Their faces were like: this guys probably is 10x better at my job than I am.
@Danraemon It's because they were marketing and PR people, their whole job is to manage the company's image.
They take it very seriously, and normally give a lot of thought to any public statement they make, to avoid things coming back to bite them in the arse. ie: to avoid PR risks.

You and I both! Love 'em!
@xLightFilmsx Well, I just went and read up on it a bit. I don't see how that would work, or even how you could realistically implement it.
If I was in need of EMC's services I would contact them after seeing this. They're obviously creative thinkers.
This is truly brilliant!
I love these TED shows
brilliant speech and concepts explained
links about the whole video
Great talk. Thanks.
Wonderful talk!
I tried googling 'transparency', can't found the same picture.
Whoever is running Ban Deoderant marketing needs to fire that entire team right now. lol
Another good TED talk
brilliant, I love the bit on Sao Paulo - way to go brazil :) love it, love it
I miss talks that go deeper than this.
1. Berate major corporation to get famous
2. Ask major companies to participate
3. surprised when they say no
A little word-up note to Morgan:

What's the name if this film!!
he is from where I live, WV :) (reason he did the underground coal mines episode)
I wrote a paper on radical transparency, and it got an A. transparency is going to change the way market and customers know and buy shit
@kev3d I'm not talking about going back to a direct barter system, money came into play to replace that and render that system obsolete. My brand is being told I’m too upper class by people as a common insult while actually being broke and paying my own way through college with debt
whenever he says something to the people in boardrooms, they have one thought posted on their faces "OMG IS HE LIKE TROLLING ME???"
Great and inspiring talk...
@sh1zlEE What's EMC?
That's the point, Capitalism is the basis of the current business practice today so I say that it's not necessarily an "attack" on Capitalism but a very insightful contemplation of the cons and pros(if there are any) of Capitalism mainly in the sub-topic that is branding in general.
I dunno much about Morgan
but I Loved Super Size Me
He could be a motivational speaker!!!
blessed by god to show people the truth
When I googled transparency it was the 6th image on the first page....
I didn't believe it when he first said it.. then I remembered you can google almost any word and find something naked on the first page.
great TED 👌
EMC did a pretty good subtitle if you ask me..
@Jotto999 Advertising isn't necessary in a world with no currency. Did you read his statement in full?
TED talk screen shouldn't be for commercial advertising (except maybe for the event sponsors)
Training employees to be risk-takers and not be afraid of opportunities that might scare them: The philosophy of Wallstreet. As seen, it's a great way to lose someone else's money.
Transparency is the solution to all the world's problems.
Great speech.
Sao Paolo.. beautiful, what a relief for eyes and brain :)
i just googled transparency and that IS one of the top results. STILL. o god hahahahha
i saw bam and pom up there. gonna go buy some next time at the store :))

I need to watch this :)
EMC got to buy the title but it isn't even the youtube title!
Transparency, ladies and gentleman
You have to see the "Zeitgeist III: Moving forward" movie this is related to this.
There's NO audiooooo ooo ooo ooo oo o o o o o o
Vermont banned freestanding billboards. One of many reasons VT is such a great little state.
I don't get it. His movie is a feature length chain of advertisements? People typically want to avoid ads, not pay to watch them for 2 hours.
Well done,sir.
@stately1967 You knew the name of his TED talk?
I need to watch his movies! :))
@captvanhalen Morgan's intention is to educate & enlighten us(after we pay $9 at the box office),so, yes, he should pronounce the city's name correctly, otherwise how do people know where it is?
