    I hate to be the one saying "Um Actually!" but, um.. actually...
    The Imperium still knows how to build Battleships and Titans, but only on certain worlds. On some Forge worlds they can pump them out as easily as we see in Stellaris, while on others the knowledge to produce them has been lost and they may not even be able to fully operate or repair the ones they have. There's also a major issue with resource management, even if you have a planet that knows how to build Titans there's no guarantee they'll always have the resources to produce one.

    • @Bleiser3
      @Bleiser3 2 года назад +3

      Often times they don't really understand how it is really created, operated or maintained properly etc. They still can create some of the stuff but don't really understand how it is made if you would ask them to re-create the process of building the stuff somewhere else, they wouldn't be able to. So the moment some forge or a whole forge world is lost, some technology and other stuff are lost forever.
      It's like they can practically change a tire from a car but don't really understand any theory behind the whole process. The moment they lose the means/tools/forges/whatever of changing a tire, it's lost completely.

    • @tbotalpha8133
      @tbotalpha8133 2 года назад +10

      This is one of the things I dislike about Stellaris, but it crops up in a lot of other strategy titles, too. A lack of technological and scientific regression. All of these games treat progress and development as an inevitable upward trajectory, as though things will only get better, and there's no way that the growth of knowledge could stall or decline.
      I get that Stellaris isn't trying to be a realistic simulation of space politics, and that the linear, inevitable growth of techs and traditions is a gameplay conceit more than an attempt to simulate a historical narrative. But this tendency towards Whig history makes it impossible to properly simulate settings like Warhammer 40K, where the decline and ruin of the existing order are major themes.

    • @TailAbNormal
      @TailAbNormal 2 года назад +1

      @@tbotalpha8133 Stellaris does have the Fallen Empires, as well as two Origins that let you RP your empire as a former interstellar superpower. (Shattered Ring and Remnants)
      There's also the End of the Cycle which completely annihilates your empire and sets you back to a single planet, and you could probably count the Machine Uprising event chain as well if you decide to resolve it by completely getting rid of all your robots & A.I
      Not sure how the devs could implement the actual lose of previously researched technologies. Or if that would even be fun to play & manage since, IMO, it'd feel like a waste of all the time I spent on that particular game.

      @tbotalpha8133 2 года назад +5

      @@TailAbNormal Some kind of education mechanic might work, where you'd need to invest resources into providing education services for your pops. And maintain libraries and the like, to preserve the accumulated knowledge of your people. And then at some point you might have to cut the education budget, causing your pops to lose their education level over time, making them less and less capable of more technical work.
      Or your libraries might be destroyed, forcing you to rebuild and restock them before your pops forget important technologies. Or you might have to establish an institution like the Adeptus Mechanicus, that preserves old technology and manufacturing through ritualized maintenance. Allowing you to keep tech your pops no longer understand, but at the cost of kneecapping your future research.
      Admittedly I don't know how it would work in the nitty-gritty, but there's a skeleton of an idea, there. As for whether it would be fun - I think It would require a different mindset from the player.
      There's another game called Dwarf Fortress, where players are tasked with running a colony of fantasy Dwarves as they set up a new home in untouched wilderness. The game's tagline is "Losing is fun!". Because the game has so many detailed, interlocking systems, that when Dwarven society breaks down, it tends to do so in spectacular ways. Producing enthralling, captivating, and often grimly hilarious stories of the colony's collapse.
      Essentially, the game puts so much effort into simulating decline and ruin, as well as stability and growth, that playing through the death of a colony can be just as dramatic and interesting as keeping it running properly. So it could be with Stellaris. You'd stop thinking about the game as a contest to be won, and start thinking about it as a Space Stories generator. Where you're just one actor on a galactic stage, rising and falling and changing with the times.
      Hell, Paradox have already done this with Crusader Kings, where there are enough systems in place that you can happily play through the decline and collapse of your kingdom, and your ultimate usurpation by newer powers.

The other factions would grab a big chunk of the galaxy and do their own purge if it starts as a normal Stellaris game. If you make the start 30k and the Great Crusade, you won't end up nowhere near 40k at the midgame or whenever, even if you tried.

    • @housewilma4904
      @housewilma4904 2 года назад +2

      @@tortex1 not really only SOME minor factions took territory during the strife the big ones were still mostly stagnant from eldar to necron.
      so it would be you starting off with sol with about 10 minor alien faction with just as small a starting zone.
      with "fallen empire" type replacements representing the necrons and eldar who could reawaken like they can in stellaris.

    • @tortex1
      @tortex1 2 года назад +5

      @@housewilma4904 I suspect the minor factions would need negative modifiers to keep them from going completely ham.
      The bigger issue I see is needing to make the galaxy mostly colonised, each planet with their own territory, navy etc. Terra would get a event when encountering a human nation to either annex them peacefully or conquer them (RNG). That would be... chaotic. And fps dropping most likely.
      All that said, it sounds doable, but it would take a lot of work. And Stellaris doesn't do an important part of 40k, epic ground battles.

    Recently I rolled back my Stellaris and tried to come up with a strategy to win in this scenario, but I think it may genuinely not be winnable, or it may just take years to do so.
    Since the market is broken, I feel like a genuine strategy has to avoid it entirely (otherwise just trade for infinite resources, and win as any faction).
    So to lay out the situation; there are IIRC 35 or 37 xeno empires, and each has at least 1 shipyard and at least 1 fleet at a strength between 52k and 187k. You get maybe a combined fleet power of 500-750k. The western half of the Imperium at first glance appears the safest, but immediately falls to events where human rebels secede, followed shortly thereafter by chaos invasions across 2 of the major clusters. I'm genuinely not sure if it's better to reconquer those worlds or focus elsewhere.
    Eventually the events calm down and you get the relative peace of dealing with the AI factions, their fleets, and their invasions unaided by events - except if you invade an ork world they get an event dropping 1-5k troops and up to 100k fleet strength on at least one random world of yours. There are also random dark eldar raid events, chaos events up to invasions of random planets, and random ork invasions; where if they take your world and you retake it later, it spawns a counterattacking ork invasion on a random world.
    Your mineral income appears fantastic, but isn't enough to rapidly turn around your economy, your food deficit is a major hurdle that quickly cascades into a consumer goods deficit and gridlocks the galactic economy; although you can conquer a few xeno worlds, set them to processing, and kill two birds with one stone. Your alloy production is abysmal given the scale of the problem.
    After all there there are two major hurdles; the first is that your fleets are too small to defend everywhere and there are no choke points. You can amass your fleets to deal overwhelming damage to 1 enemy faction at a time, but "warp" / hyperlane travel damages and occasionally destroys ships in your fleet, so the very act of massing a battlefleet / crusade causes attrition to your fleets at a scale you can't afford to repair.
    The second issue is just that it's so much to manage. The Imperium undoubtedly has, if not the resources, then the potential resources to overwhelm every single hostile faction one at a time; grinding down the galaxy one xenocidal campaign after the other until you can defeat what's left in a stand up fight. You start with something like 600 world and 13000 human pops, the issue is molding them into anything useful, and I personally can't imagine micromanaging production on that many worlds for as long as it would take to make it useful.
    TL;DR Essentially, the Imperium is an ice sheet drifting into warm water, you have a small paddle. Do you fight the current, and try to return to colder seas, or do you spend your time doing anything else?

      That really is the absolute state of the galaxy in 40K, isn't it?
      Especially with the Imperium. It easily has the resources to wipe out any one enemy faction. The problem is that ever focusing so much on one means they would be left wide open for the other 100 or so threats they face daily.
      Someone once said, "The Imperium of Mankind is like a man hanging from a ledge by his fingertips. The only others there are also hanging from the ledge in other spots. He doesn't have enough strength to pull himself up, just to hold on for a few more seconds. Despite this, he decides to take one hand off to give everyone else the finger."
