  • The capital of Goa moved to Panjim or Panaji when a plague hit the old capital, now called Old Goa. Below the Altinho hill, came up the colorful houses, not by design but by an order that did not permit white color for houses. White was reserved for the churches and as you see in this video the tradition continues till date.
The narrow roads go through small cafes, homes with oyster shell windows, colorful wells, curio shops, staircases that take you up the hill & art galleries that showcase the local artists. You pass by churches, can climb up the hill to visit the Maruti temple and see the underground fountains. If you are lucky you can see the people playing music or singing.
Panjim Heritage Walk is a light, easy walk that anyone can take. There are always cafes and art galleries to stop by.

I have been on this walk multiple times and every time I discover something new.

The details in the tiling are exquisite. Walking the streets is truly the best way to get to know an area!

Totally agree, there is nothing like discovering a place on foot.

That side street looks awfully dangerous to walk down with all the scooters. As soon as I saw all the tiles I was instantly reminded of Lisbon. Very cool!!!

What a colorful and vibrant city. Interesting tidbit about how that came to be. Walking tours are a great way to get to know a city.

I can never get tired of Fontainhas. The video brought back my memories of the walk. Love the whole Portuguese touch with those shell windows and pretty blue tiles.

Have been to Goa plenty of times, but the thought of doing a heritage walk in Panjim never crossed my mind. Though I did visit the churches, but roaming on the streets would be quite an amazing experience.

Put that for your next visit to Goa - I highly recommend it to everyone visiting Goa.

I like the different colors. The streets look so narrow. I am assuming they go in both directions...? Really pretty I would like to walk around myself.

You can really see the Portuguese influence in the style of buildings and of course the blue and white tiles.

Yes, this was a part of Portugal till 1960 for about 450 years, the influence is very strong and take a long time to go, if it ever goes.

Love that color was mandated and it's such a beautiful area. I'd never heard of Panjim but it's definitely on my radar now.

Just to inform you that the entire area shown in the video covers 2 wards - Sao Tome and Fontainhas and not just Fontainhas alone! The houses which has the caption 'colourful houses in Fontainhas' are in Sao Tome area and not in Fontainhas!

So confusing, I would never in a million years be able to guess where in the world this is if you didn't have a description. I love the rustic colors very much

It is interesting to see the influence of Portuguese there. If I didn't know where it was, I would say in Portugal. The colorful walls and blue tiles.

    • @Inditales
      @Inditales  5 лет назад

Right, it was a part of Portugal for a very long time, so the influence is very much there.
