  • Not the greatest picture quality, but a very good game with Roger Clemens pitching on an ESPN Sunday Night.

I wish they would open every baseball game with the same animation and theme music. What beauties they are!

Bar none! The San Francisco Giants are lucky to have him call games and the Baltimore Orioles were foolish to let him go.

I was only 8 years old when this aired but this era brings a certain nostalgia and peace of mind that I can't explain. In some weird way it cures my depression when I'm watching these old shows. Music wise too it's the perfect amount of 90s sport cheese.

This is the year where people suggest Roger was supposedly declining, but before his strained groin in June, he had a 3.18 ERA, 3.19 FIP, and 96 Ks in 102 innings despite trying to strikeout fewer hitters early in the season. Even through July, he was still at 3.32 ERA, 3.02 FIP, and 121 Ks in 133 innings. This still looked more like Roger Clemens 1.0 than the fastball/splitter Clemens from 1996 on. Mostly fastballs and some sliders the first 2 times through the order with no splitters, but a lot of splitters the 3rd time through the order. Roger got Snow to chase a 95 mph fastball above the letters at 17:20 and overpowers him with another fastball not as high, but above the belt for the strikeout at 17:35. He looked to put Salmon away with a hard slider down and away at 31:52 and got Orton looking at 94 mph down and away with a generous outside corner at 44:11. At 44:38, Morgan isn't quite right: Roger would occasionally cut his fastball during his time in Boston. At 1:13:40, that was the first splitter he threw in this game, but his splitter got much better. He followed that up with another one down and away at 1:13:55, but Polonia fought it off to stay alive and Roger went right back to the splitter down and away to finish off Polonia at 1:15:30. He got ahead of Snow 1-2 as the bottom fell out of the splitter late at 1:28:19 and Snow just stayed alive on another splitter at 1:29:01, but Clemens got away with a hanging splitter up near the belt to Snow at 1:29:49. At 1:33:53, you could see the home run by Salmon coming. Roger was clearly tired for several batters by this point. That's why you see him try to drop down sidearm at 1:36:26. Although the splitter was a good strikeout pitch for him late in this game and he got Gonzales on another good one at 1:38:18. But he didn't have the 94-95 mph fastball he had earlier in the game. By 1:45:27, that fastball was down to 92 mph.

Carlos Rincon Anaheim Angels was the best and most accurate. They play at the “Big A”. These things all correlate nicely. California Angels was cool and big-brotherly to the other Cali teams so there was a swag to that. The LA Angels is just a lie, they are a team by and for the suburbs and nobody in LA cares about the Angels no matter how much their ownership wants them too.

By this time in his career, Scott Sanderson was a junkballer. Tough through the first time or two in the order. By the third at-bat, it was home run derby!
