  • Hi guys, I have been away from knife making for a while. The reason is because I was building a power hammer and the summer was unbearably hot, but im back. This is my first attempt at a San Mai knife. It didn't forge weld all the way, but I decided to finish the knife and keep it for myself. I hope you enjoy the process.

I learned the hard way that forge welding thin wide and long billets is bad idea. In most cases it loses it's heat very fast when you put it on the anvil the bottom layer is no longer at forge welding temperature. Using thick pieces and then forging them thin after the weld is better idea. Also - the bimetal hacksaw blade is some sort of medium carbon steel with around 0.4 - 0.5% C and it will harden , but is not the best for cutting edge. The 15n20 piece will be harder and more wear resistant. Anyways it was fun video , good luck with your vchannel and your work. You made awesome power hammer.
