    As a New Zealander, I've been a fan of Argentina rugby since the 80s, so for me, I expected that Argentina would rise. Especially since the 90s, with the increase of New Zealanders for example, going all around the world to play and to coach rugby. When this happened, there was no doubt to me that other countries would quickly improve due to the sharing of rugby knowledge from countries like New Zealand to other countries who were keen to learn and to improve.

      Argentina was amateur, On the contrary NZ, Australia, England, Ireland, South Africa they were all professional already.

      Since Argentina became professional, they have started to improve tremendously against such opponents.

    • @Gotamablessed1
      @Gotamablessed1 Месяц назад +2

      @@lecoexpands There were differences in Rugby ability between those countries going back to Amateur days. New Zealand, for example, always won against the Pumas. The main difference I feel was due to Rugby being the main sport for NZ, and not for Argentina, and that Rugby was deeply a part of NZ identity. That's why when NZers started to go abroad as players and coaches, they were welcomed wherever they went.

Only 23yo, playing 1st division with my club (Perpignan) and making us gain another level of performance last year (close to qualify playoffs of the toughest league in the world while we have the last budget). 20 tackles or + per game (proving a high lecture of the play), fantastic technique, insane runner and sense of positionning whatever your game plan, super rough on contact...Tonight he did an INSANE game against the boks, after having been incredible against the Wallabies. Rugby in Argentina was an amateur sport, mentored by South Africa since the late 1960's. It grew in secondary school teams, private sporting Clubs, and teams of the universities rugby league. After 2007, Pichot advocated for Argentina to be included in the rugby championships, and they're accepted on the conditions to make rugby a professional sport in Argentina. And after more than 10 years of intense work, the results are coming in in the different categories: Pumas, Pumas7s, Jaguars, etc. Argentinian Rugby fans were and are very proud of our rugby teams. We have our own club, in our neighbourhood or in our city where we feel a great sense of belonging.We play rugby in our clubs but we also hang out, as children we are there every day in the summer. When we stopped playing rugby we still went to the club to have dinner and remember old times with other ex-players. It's like having 2 things and in this one you are with all your friends. It is something important to understand Argentine rugby, if you watch a Pumas match in Argentina you will see many flags and jerseys of different colors in the stands and this is it. Rugbiers didn't received any payment, most of players were Laywers, doctors, engineers, profesionals of different disciplines, taht played rugby. And some of them called to by members of the Los Pumas. Then, a profesional league existed, but the pay is not even close to the pay on soccer clubs, so many of our rubgiers started looking for opportunities in France or England. They learned from the best teams in Europe. Los Pumas evolved accordingly, and now we can play excellent matches versus the best of the best teams. Los Pumas have been a top but volatile team for years, but have invariably performed well at the highest level, competing at the World Cups and in Rugby Championship. On several occasions they have outplayed their opposition but failed to secure the result unlike the Springboks who have often been the second best team on the pitch but

Vamos Los Pumas.

      @@WatchRugby24 Solo remarcarte algunas observaciones. Saludos.

    You r forgetting that before the 2007 World Cup Argentina, in spite that Rugby is amateur there, had had great success at the World Cups. Even during last century they had beaten absolutely all the rugby powers but the All Blacks, with whom they had tied. Even in thise tines where there were no good cameras and the refs were still much more biased against The Pumas than they are now.

    Barely into the video and I already saw a few misreadings of the situation. Rugby's been played forever in Argentina, and it's a highly popular sport. Football is more popular, that's it. With basketball, they are the three team sports most played.
    A funny observation was made by a British journalist living in Argentina in the times of Maradona still young, relatively drug-free and playing at his peak: football in Argentina is not a religion, it's the only religion.

    Very emotive narrative, but totally inaccurate. Rugby was very developed in Argentina 50 years ago and even earlier. They were never at the level of the top teams, but since the 1970s there were victories over England, France, Australia. A tie with the AB in the mid 80s. When rugby became professional everywhere in the 90s, Argentina lost a step, and the recovery from that started with the 2007 world cup that ended up with the entrance in the Rugby Championship and Super Rugby.

      I think that 1999 WC started to show the real potential of the argentinian rugby, although 2003 WC was a choke we were out just by 1 point against Ireland. In 2005 we defeated England in Twickenham, something was brewing up with that team.
      2007 WC confirmed that, then it was a matter of having at least 30 players at top level and competing against the best regurlarly (before 2012 Argentina could only play 6 test matches a year). Future looks great.

    The recent recognition of Argentine rugby, especially after defeating the Springboks, is nothing more than a long overdue acknowledgment. Let's not forget that we are the "Pumas" because even the Springboks mistakenly identified the jaguar on our emblem as a puma back in the 1960s.
    Argentine sports, particularly ball sports, are simply phenomenal. Despite being a vast country with a relatively small population, we consistently excel. We're the undisputed world champions in polo, have reached six World Cup finals in football (winning three), two World Cup finals in basketball (winning one and an Olympic gold), won the Davis Cup and several Grand Slams. Our women's hockey team is almost always among the top three in the world, and our volleyball team is consistently in the top ten. Argentina has produced the first five-time Formula 1 world champion, the greatest middleweight boxer of all time, and, of course, the two greatest football players in history, Maradona and Messi. This track record speaks volumes about our sporting potential, and few countries can match our rich sporting history.
    It's important to remember that rugby was an amateur sport until 2009. While it remains largely amateur, the introduction of professional franchises in that year marked a significant shift.

    • @escipion01
      @escipion01 Месяц назад

      Reconocer el rugby argentino recién ahora, justo después de ganarle a los boks, no es más que un reconocimiento tardío. No olvidemos que somos "pumas" pues estos mismos boks confundieron, en la década de los 60' del siglo pasado, el jaguareté de nuestro escudo con un puma (sic).
      Nada, el deporte argentino (sobretodo en juegos con pelota) es increíble. Con un país bastante extenso territorialmente pero con poca gente en relación ser por lejos el mejor equipo de polo del mundo, haber jugado 6 finales mundiales de fútbol y haber ganado 3, haber jugado 2 finales mundiales en basquetball y haber ganado una además de un oro olímpico, haber ganado una copa davis y unos cuantos grand slams, tener, prácticamente siempre, un equipo de hokey femenino top 3 a nivel mundial con varias finales mundiales y olímpicas, tener un equipo de volleyball top 10 a nivel mundial con medallas en mundiales y olimpiadas, tener el primer quíntuple campeón del mundo en F1, y el mejor campeón de peso mediano de boxeo de la historia, además de los 2 mejores jugadores de futbol de la historia mundial, Maradona y Messi. Todo lo expuesto, solo habla de nuestro potencial y muy pocos paises pueden demostrar una historia deportiva tan rica como la nuestra.
      No olvidemos que el rugby fue un deporte amateur hasta entrado el año 2009, y lo sigue siendo, solo que a partir de ese año se generaron algunas franquicias rentadas.

Cricket died a death after the 1940s with the passing of many of the Anglo generation but all the other sports thrived although hockey & rugby are primarily sports for the middle & upper classes as opposed to football.

Argentina is very proud of it's local clubs, amateur culture, and 2007 Bronze' is the explosion of that coctel between amateur passion, small-club identification and culture, and global professionalism. And wait and see, we can be Maradona, Messi, the Pope...

    In my humble opinion I do not agree with you about how the Argentinian national team was regarded by the rest of rugby nations. The Rugby Football Union was created in 1899 thus rugby has been part of our sports from a very early stage.
    The UAR (Argentina's Rugby Union) only allowed professionalism to appear with the participation of Jaguares in 2016 in Super Rugby therefore giving away a great handicap against those countries that had already a professional structure .
    Even during the amateur era Argentina was able to claim some scalps against the rugby main nations. As a reference I can mention a win for Argentina against Australia in 1979 and a four matches winning streak for Argentina against France from 2002 to 2006, just before the World Cup played in France.
