  • With carriers like Air France, Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways, and China Southern dropping the superjumbo, Lufthansa is one of the few remaining operators of the Airbus A380.
But rather than being based at Lufthansa’s main hub of Frankfurt Airport, the aircraft operate out of its secondary hub at Munich. Why is this?

Also more premium Demand from Munich. The A380 has tons of premium seats

Why more premium demand from Munich. Frankfurt is one of the biggest financiar, diplomatic center in Europe, with many international companies that are based there, and after all one of the biggest expo center in Europe surely, but also worldwide.

@@biltztom2685 Less competition in MUC, and often it's just Lufthansa or bust. Out of FRA you usually have multiple options for each longhaul destination, LH, Discover, Condor, and the destination countries' airlines, that very often only fly to FRA.

The basis of the A380 was moved in 2019 to Munich, because the Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr was upset when Frankfurt Airport welcomed his biggest nightmare Ryanair with special low landing fees Lufthansa didn’t get.

Munich may be Lufthansa's second hub, its hardly "secondary".

  • @cykotronic

MUC is more tightly slot controlled and can’t really increase capacity, so they need to fly bigger planes there if they want to increase passengers. FRA has more capacity (more runways), so they can get away with more frequency and smaller planes.

One other reason for having the A380 fly out of MUC is that with the other Airbus aircraft in Munich LH had almost no First Class capacity there while there is some demand for it out of MUC. FRA with the B747-8 fleet does not have that problem.

The majority of Lufthansa A380 passengers will have probably have flown to Germany from another country. With connections to both airports generally being excellent, it is the destinations rather than which hub is used that matters most.

The competition in Frankfurt to many Flightdestinys is much higher. I suppose that in Munich Lufthansa has fewer competitors for Flightdestinys, so it is easier to get the A380 full with passengers.

One of the worst airlines to use, tight seats tight and not comfortable not mich of foot space, rude people , food is bad. for long trips not advised , use Swiss air or Qatar airlines
