On the show they play their character a bit big, but he just don't want to go fast all the time. But sometimes he lets himself free and in those moments Hammond and Jeremy have to concentrate if they want to keep up with him. Do you remember the episode where they drive in Romania and James May lets himself completely free and Jeremy is just smiling and laughing in the car because May is sliding and pushing his car so hard that Jeremy is having problems keeping up?
Defensive driving skills are essential in order to safely manoeuvre supercars on public roads, which is why many supercar brands provide free training to new owners. Yeah, Richard and his wife wrote a book about the accident called 'On the Edge' which talks about it, and Clarkson and May were really worried about him, Jeremy didn't want to leave the hospital.

exactly. he's totally selfless in spite of his ego and you really can tell that he wants nothing more than to entertain people and make them laugh. Every time he's asked what has changed about him he deflects sheer existential dread with a new love for celery.
I have gotten traumatic amnesia twice, first time in a car accident where the car ended up in four pieces and me standing up in the road looking at it calmly and the second the hospital did dumb stuff, but I remember being ordered not to drive for a certain period of time after coming home. I was DYING to drive again, it's like you think it's a necessary part of life even though it almost ended your life.
lalaithan Hearing about it, and looking it up beyond this video, I'm thinking I had it after a wreck where the farmer who came to help wondered where I had come from as he didn't think anyone could survive the crash. I didn't seek medical care, so I'll never know for sure, but I dealt with some strange time slips after the crash for a couple or three weeks. I was driving 4 days after. Knowing what I now know about the condition I'm thinking that was a dumb thing to do so soon, but I was awfully young and dumb when it happened.
lalaithan My father didn't get into a comma, but one time in a BMX competition he fell chin-first into the ground and only remembers filling a form with his information in hospital. Later people told him that he just got up from the fall, got inside an ambulance without any help and appeared to be completely fine and he doesn't remember any of that. Sometimes the brain gets crazy in high adrenaline situations!
I'll never get over how these mannerisms can casually insult each other so often, and yet everyone had a good laugh about it and moves on. That's a kind of thick-skinned self security that I wish many more people would wear on a daily basis, especially in America. Everyone's so damned insecure that the littlest things that people can say call their whole essence into question. It's quite perplexing, and frankly just plain infuriating to watch. I have no idea why I felt the need to use this much vocabulary...I'm American. I suppose the proper comment should have been: "LOL, these dudes talk pretty funny but if they called me a "bugga" I'd kick der ass." I enjoyed the video nevertheless.
David MacMillan Yeah. Me and a bloke from Britain (who moved to the Netherlands to study here) always have a good conversation with lots of banter and "fucks" and people around us would get offended or just look at us as if we're crazy.
Many people believe this man is alive through good luck, if he hadn’t immediately turned the extremely hi-flow fuel supply off when the tyre blew out he wouldn’t be! Good training and quick reactions kept him here ✌🏻
I just read that a year or so after this interview that Richard had no memory of every being on this show. It's scary to think of how a brain injury can affect our memory, I'm very happy that Richard has made a complete recovery and is living a happy life with his wife and two young children. A very nice and funny gentleman.
He does seem fairly normal, but in recent years he mentions not being right in the head for up to a year after the crash, even though he went back to work. Specifically the polar special..I remember him saying he was a bit off during the trip, and that he randomly cried when he was alone... I guess seeming normal doesnt neccesarily mean you are indeed fine. He ended up being extremely lucky..
I am watching this knowing there will be no more Top Gear....so sad. Those three men had such a relationship and friendship they could take the piss of each other and simply not offend....The sad thing is some people simply didn't get their sense of humour. I mean can you imagine the horror if Clarkson would've done what Richard just said they had an agreement would be said if any one of them croaked...'anyway...'? There would've been a public outcry from those who just didn't get it. From those of us enlightened ones, who did get it, well we would've been rolling on the ground holding onto our tummies... I loved the show and I loved all three stars of the show...RIP Top Gear. I will miss it. I am female and its the only car show I will and have ever watched! :(
I'm a massive fan of the Hamster and when he had hie "incident". I thought we'd lost him. The man is a walking miracle and I couldn'tbe happier. And GOD BLESS MINDY for supporting him through everything. Love to both of them and the whole family. Will meet you soon Rich, with a project scimitar GTC. Smallest cog
I was hit by a car when I was walking home from school, when I was 13. It was doing 50 in a 30mph zone and the doctor at the hospital said "you're very lucky, 7 out of ten people die being hit at that speed". Well I had a mangled left arm (which the doctors eventually saved) and a horrendous head injury and it did change my personality. I had been a happy, healthy little girl and after that I trusted nothing. I refused to go to school for six months, my mother home schooled me. I just couldn't cross the road any more, something inside me kicked in and I just couldn't. And just like Richard Hammond, I don't remember the incident at all. I just remember being in hospital and my parents looking very, very scared.
The best part of this is that although it was awful and everyone was concerned for him, he's willing to laugh about it and take the piss. Fantastic! Perfectly British way to deal with it.
Nice to see him back here doing the interview. Having seen the crash the man was very lucky to make a recovery. Terrible time for his family esp his wife who would have been torn between being with him in hospital and a mum to thier young family.
he wrote a book about the experience, well his wife wrote the first bit about when he was unconscious and he wrote the last bit. i'm not usually one for biographies/autobiographies but it was a really interesting read :)
I'm a huge fan of Top Gear. Yet, somehow, I wasn't aware of this accident until a few hours ago. This interview is frustrating, to say the least. The interviewer seems to have lost the art of *conversation*. He asks a question, and doesn't give Richard a full right of reply, before cutting him off, and cracking a gag. Given that Richard had survived a potentially fatal accident and, after four months, made himself available to talk about his experience, I would have thought that this git could have given more opportunity for Richard to articulate his thoughts and feelings, without so many rude interjections. Alas no. Jonathan, sometimes great television is not about you, it's about the guests, and knowing when to shut the hell up!!
Very well put. Jonathan Ross is not only only an ass, his taste in music and decor, even at the level of variety shows, is the absolute worst I have ever seen. He's probably also a nightmare to work with. I hope his show has been canceled since this interview was done.
I didn't notice too many interruptions, although these shows are more relaxed and lighthearted than a serious interview. It's more of a conversation, rather than a presenter dryly asking questions and then nodding for the next twenty minutes. It felt to me like Jonathan wanted Richard to feel relaxed and was filling in any potentially awkward moments in order to keep it flowing smoothly.
Jonathan Ross show isnt a serious interview show... its a light hearted fun interview... and thats the way most british show works... but i do see your point
I never knew that he suffered a brain injury. I've been through that myself, however for me it was more than two weeks later. It was more like almost two months.
I had a pretty horrible crash last year and i remember four things even though i was supposedly awake the whole time through it: Hitting the car itself, no pain at firt mind you, just a hard bump and thinking "oh fuck", flying through the air for what felt like multiple seconds, screaming a tthe top of my lungs for a second and then getting my head back together once i was on the ground and couldnt move my arms very surreal experience altogether honestly
My mother had traumatic amnesia when a car hit us( mother myself and my brother) in the station wagon and spun us round. My mother suffered a head flesh wound, and my brother and myself walked away from the accident, but my mother had no recollection of anything after impact. Her head healed fine.
You know what could’ve saved him, the fact that he was shorter. Seriously, if it was Clarkson in there all the force would’ve gone through his helmet and most likely killed him.
Thanks! I thought there was another interview but couldn't remember for definant and thought maybe they'ed just cut it out of this interview on you tube.

'you wewe wacing a vewwy fast wocket caw is that wight?'
'i have a vewwy good fwiend in wome cawwed biggus dickus!'
Great stuff.
All the jokes he made I believe are a way of deflecting the truth, which is that all of this terrified him. If he answered the questions directly, I’m convinced the interview would have been far more emotional.
exactly. he's totally selfless in spite of his ego and you really can tell that he wants nothing more than to entertain people and make them laugh. Every time he's asked what has changed about him he deflects sheer existential dread with a new love for celery.
''injured at work? dont drive a jet car at 300mph'' hugh dennis joke mock the week
Oh this is wichard hammond, could have sworn it was richard hammond
Tom haha
Because It Is Richard Hammond He's Trolling
Tom wibbley wobbley jonathon woss
Tom haha 😂 gotta love jonafan woss! (shame your a city fan though 😒😁)
I met Richard when he was the brainiac presenter, I have his autograph :D
+Kate Rainbow I miss that show. it was good fun and it didn't last with the replacement presenter for the reason that he isn't Richard Hammond.
I know him personally
Lucy,Zara&Harry Scudy is he Nice?
Awsome!
Lucy,Zara&Harry Scudy that’s lovely, bet he is a wonderful person 😊
Wichard Hammond!
The Commenter It's no pwoblem weally, The Commentew. Pwoceed.
From Monty Python's The Life Of Brian: "....the highest wanking Woman...." No wonder Jonathan Woss talks so fast. It's to clip his impediment short.
Were you aware that it was going wong
Please no, dont let the chinese drive rocket cars
Luke Bekker can u spell?
@@Patrick-pi7ng You're a dummy 2 years ago and probably still.
it's weird how he and David Tennant seem so similar
round face and googling eyes
Clarkson did describe David Tennant as a good looking version of Richard Hammond.
@@scsutton1 But Hammond is genuinely good looking too.
Of course, not as handsome as Jeremy.
@@AnnaMarianne
What sort of a fetish do you need to have to think Clarkson is hot?
"Do you still have all the memories as before?" How the heck would he know!!!
Been looking for this interview for ages, thanks for uploading.
Richard is adorable, I was so glad he came through it ok.
I suppose the proper comment should have been: "LOL, these dudes talk pretty funny but if they called me a "bugga" I'd kick der ass."
I enjoyed the video nevertheless.
I agree! People tend to let things get to them quite a bit here in the U.S. It's insecurity mostly.
Madman Lac Livid Yeah at least if their English, that's my experience. Don't know about the Scots and the Welsh.
its called banter. its just when people bounce insults off each other you just take it on the chin
David MacMillan Yeah. Me and a bloke from Britain (who moved to the Netherlands to study here) always have a good conversation with lots of banter and "fucks" and people around us would get offended or just look at us as if we're crazy.
***** aussies and english people have it, but thats about it, its unheard of in the hispanic world
If you get the chance, read Hammonds autobiography, it`s really special and a brilliant read!
Oh dear... Dumb Britain
10pennysweets fuck me you dont get much dumber than the US OF A right at the back of the queue when god was handing out brains . fucking fools
When the good Lord was teaching the correct use of a full stop in a sentence, certain people were not paying attention. Oh the irony! The irony!
AAAH the grammer distraction technique. You Muppet.
10pennysweets Ironic indeed , more so, that you never rectified your own punctuation error !
Many people believe this man is alive through good luck, if he hadn’t immediately turned the extremely hi-flow fuel supply off when the tyre blew out he wouldn’t be! Good training and quick reactions kept him here ✌🏻
and good luck

My brother got hit by a drunk band driver n was in an induced coma for 3 months so this interview means a lot x
Wish I could be as charming as Hammond. He's a serious class act.
So glad Richard is okay again, I so enjoy to watch him on TopGear and I'm glad he is going back to join Jeramy and James on the show.
I had a severe brain injury too, and when I recovered I could move each of my eyeballs independently
u sure u wont watch the new 1
+MrWisemasterful I would love that!
+Tilly Divine I'd be fine with him keeping his job, could care less about whether he keeps his job or not.
I'd hit him back and sort it out properly
well surprise, grand tour
I love how this dude is just so cool and witty about something that damn near killed him. The world needs his humor.
reminds me of a mini david tennant

Yes im not the only one :D
More than reminds me. From some angles they look like twins separated at birth.
Soloman1001 Yeah I don't know why I wrote this..
Not Scottish
Did anyone else say "awwwww" at 9:26? That is such a touching picture
The fact that he doesn't remember doing this interview (which he mentioned in a later interview from Jonathon Ross) is proper chilling
Glasgow scale about comas?
Could be worse. The Bristol scale measures the wetness or solidness of poop.
Saw Richard Hammond in Cheltenham with his kid, he's awesome
So happy he's alright. Really like Hammond not only on top gear but all of his other insightful programmes. Great guy.
So glad he's okay!! Gotta be one of the most amazing men on earth, handsome, talented, what else could you want? ;D
Gonna go out on a limb and say you're a huge fan of Richard. LOL. :-P
Jason McLeod Think the pp helps give that away a little, too :p
tall
I know someone who looks just like him and is even the same height. And he's also only four years older than Richard.
Omg I need to meet him xDD
after watching the crash i believe the tyre got punctured
The rubber on the front right wheel poped off when he hit about 280, wich caused the car to steer violently to the right and then flip several times.
+Nuclear Guy looks like the rim of the wheel shreaded the tyre.

well wadies and wentlemen I welcome you Wichard Wammond
Heather Routledge hahaha
This show/set looks so late 90s!
"Mista Wichad Hammond!"
"Wacing a vewwy fast wocket car"
Does this guy know how to pronounce the letter R?
he cant no he's made jokes about himself pronounce R in the past for it, its like a weird lisp thing
Speech impediments are a thing that exist
Jonathan Woss has never been able to pronounce R.
Hes been on British TV for years. Not once.
Yup, that was what i was thinking
"this guy"?
this guy happens to be a vewwy funny man, it's Jonathan Woss
I remember seeing something years ago where he mentioned he still has serious struggles because of this.
"It woz a howwible fing to wead abowt"
The best part of this is that although it was awful and everyone was concerned for him, he's willing to laugh about it and take the piss. Fantastic! Perfectly British way to deal with it.
I'm amazed that Richard's sense of humor is just as good as it was ever.
Nice to see him back here doing the interview. Having seen the crash the man was very lucky to make a recovery. Terrible time for his family esp his wife who would have been torn between being with him in hospital and a mum to thier young family.
he wrote a book about the experience, well his wife wrote the first bit about when he was unconscious and he wrote the last bit. i'm not usually one for biographies/autobiographies but it was a really interesting read :)
traybake1 what's it called? Might look it up.
It's called 'On the Edge. my story'
I love how Elmer Fudd is interviewing him.
I hope his show has been canceled since this interview was done.
i've noticed all British variety shows have this quicker English rhythm and cadence to their interviewing style.
Apparently you have no idea how Jonathan Ross works. His show is about as serious as a fart.
I never knew that he suffered a brain injury. I've been through that myself, however for me it was more than two weeks later. It was more like almost two months.
I had a pretty horrible crash last year and i remember four things even though i was supposedly awake the whole time through it:
Hitting the car itself, no pain at firt mind you, just a hard bump and thinking "oh fuck", flying through the air for what felt like multiple seconds, screaming a tthe top of my lungs for a second and then getting my head back together once i was on the ground and couldnt move my arms
very surreal experience altogether honestly
How has your recovery been?
after reading the title I was wondering "Crash? Which one?"
Watching this today, without looking at the video upload date, I was sitting here wondering which crash it was
I love how he has no idea what James's name is the whole time
My mother had traumatic amnesia when a car hit us( mother myself and my brother) in the station wagon and spun us round. My mother suffered a head flesh wound, and my brother and myself walked away from the accident, but my mother had no recollection of anything after impact. Her head healed fine.
Jeremy gave him the kiss of life and James used his mobile to create an electrical charge to start his heart pumping again
I love the skit that the brilliant Stewart Lee does about Top Gear . .utterly brilliant and truthful as you'll get . .
If anyone is really interested in Richards crash, I would really recommend his book “On the edge” it’s brilliant!
Op het randje
The way his wife just laughed through the tears you can tell she almost watched her husband die
A fascinating situation about an individual that underwent trauma to the frontal lobe. Especially from their perspective!
So many people don't know who Jonathan Ross is

LOL 2:12 "there's a shot of the car..."
Richard: "yeah, that's me parkin'."
He is a nice man. I am so glad he is ok.
i refuse to believe this is what the quality of tv was like in 2012. We had 3d tvs and shit, and this is how it looks?
Great to see him all OK, great presenter we couldn't do without him
You know what could’ve saved him, the fact that he was shorter. Seriously, if it was Clarkson in there all the force would’ve gone through his helmet and most likely killed him.
May was supposed to do it and if it was may in the same crash he would have been killed.
"There was a sense of oh... bugger"
for all the jokes he gets about it, richard hammonds height probably saved his life
Thanks! I thought there was another interview but couldn't remember for definant and thought maybe they'ed just cut it out of this interview on you tube.
The part where his wife wanted to get something out of this by telling him he used to buy her presents all the time was a thing I was expecting. 6:05
thoroughly enjoyed this interview/banter. great stuff
