Maybe we should start calling this (Toxicodendron vernix) “Poison Ash” instead of “Poison Sumac.” That way, when I make a video about true Sumac, I don’t have to receive 1000s of comments saying, “Aren’t those poisonous?!”. What do you think?
I had scars on my arms for YEARS from the blisters caused by poison sumac back in '81 while cutting geophysical survey lines in southern Mississippi and Alabama. The stalks grew straight and had few limbs and made excellent line stakes. We noticed the white sap but paid no attention to it. Then I had one of the blisters show up on a spot that I absolutely knew I had gotten that sticky white sap on while making up stakes earlier that morning. Until then we had no clue what was causing them. They would be raised large black blisters that would pop and spread and itch like dammit. The assistant surveyor had a severe reaction and spent 3 days in the hospital from it, he looked like a horror movie before he finally checked himself in. I know that sounds like a terrible job, but in those days, where else on earth could you stay baked all day and get paid good money for it. Hell, it was almost a job requirement partake in the daily 5B4. For all you who don't know, that's 5 before breakfast. LMFAO.
Thank you so much for this! My mom had some little ash trees she was going to mow over but I dug them up to plant at my house. She insisted it was poison sumac but thanks to this video I now know I was right and they are definitely little ash trees.
I live in New England Area and that is how we can well maples and Ash from other trees in the winter with no leaves. Maples and ash will grow the leaves across from each other and most other species are staggered.
Man that sumac is crazy. My skin is fucked up. First a itch, sting , blisters , pop the blisters they keep coming back. Then it’s painful as hell then it hardens over and starts to heal now I think I will have scars for life. It has a instant reaction if you try to remove sumac and get it on your skin there’s no washing that shit off it already got you. Posion ivy is nothing like this. If I hadn’t wore that full body suit I would be probably in the critical emergency room . It only got my wrist from picking it up and bagging it whenever I would reach down my sleeve would go up so my wrist are tore up raw meat. DO NOT REMOVE IT . I promise you will regret it
It seems like a few poisonous plants have alternating leaf patterns. Are there many of these look alike plants that follow this trend? And what are some to keep an eye out for? 🤔

I have that red type of sumac, that non-poison sumac, but it’s not waxy or sour. It’s like powdery seeds.
Specifically that one or one of the other edible varieties that looks extremely similar? Because apparently there are a lot of them.
Excellent!!
Also, most ash trees are dying from emerald Ash borer

Thank you!
Thanks for the info.
Hey so I ate the berries that look like the edible sumac but the berries weren't facing up they were facing down? Is there different edible sumac?
You made Google Lens look stupid! It continually labels my poison sumac as ash! It may be out to get me…😮😂😂

Didn't know that! Further confirms the similarities. :D
Google/the government IS out to get us. You should see the growing list of things they want to ban. 🤦🏽♀️
How did you become a herbalist?
I am not an herbalist

Nobody mentioning tree of heaven?
Another good one, just not quite as similar to me due to the notches in the leaflets
