Honestly looks amazing, I love that every game had different strategies. I listened to Grant's Q&A session where he mentioned the idea of "personalizing" your faction with your additional choice of heroes and mercenaries. We can see that here, and it looks amazing.

Does this game have "subfactions", a la Red Alert 2 and Kane's Wrath? Those are a good way to add personalisation to an RTS without needing to drastically inflate the faction count. For instance, you could have a variant of the Protectorate that has superior infantry but worse tanks, another that's locked out of all the good infantry but has amazing tanks and aircraft, and a third that is mediocre at both infantry and tanks but makes up for it with a bunch of weird, niche spellcasters that reward epic micro play.

CatZ, I was a fan of yours back in SC2 when you were the head of ROOT Gaming, and seeing you as the Lead Versus Dev has me beyond excited. Super glad to see people with real experience in e-sports having positions to affect its future.

I am really impressed by this game. It's already in a state where you can have bo3 series like this and all the games look really exciting. One thing I'm curious though. Atm it seems armies mostly stay together and around the heroes, but does the game support playstyles that would be more about small skirmishes in different locations in the map? One thing that makes BW still the best spectator rts for me is the fact that it's not as much about big armies colliding and more about small skirmishes all around the map, especially ZvT matchup. I would like to see something like that happen in this game. You already have the towers, which encourage splitting your forces at least in some situations of course.

From the few videos that I saw, I feel there could be more contrast between the player buildings and the map objects. But looks amazing in general.

It's amazing how streamable the game already is in such an early phase. I am astounded. All you need now is a compelling campaign with insane units and upgrades, coop and modding. Competitive seems to be sorted already xD. Gj

Pause at 35:17, i think the team colors aren't clear enough in a clumped fight. If they do melee like this i would wish to see team colors even better so i can read it better
36:20 the melee units are too muted in colors esp when they are clumped up and the HP bar obscures them

We've also seen more in-game content from ZeroSpace in 5 days than Stormgate has given us in a full year.

I'm not a fan of RTS games that have heroes, but I'm sure a large portion of W3 fans and SC fans will enjoy.

now this is the next gen rts that actually excites me. with choices of factions and upgrades i feel like you can really show your personality as a player. also, it seems they really nailed down the balance between the speed of the game and the ability to micro meaningfully. this game is more broodwar 2 than sc3 or wc4 and im loving it!

I kinda wish the maps were less symmetrical like in sc2, and more like Broodwar where there are interesting paths to take. SC2 ladder maps get really repetitive and aren't fun to play when they're basically the same layout every season. I'm hoping for a bit more creative maps when it comes out.
I can agree with that. It feels like it is a bit of a shame to have these perfectly symmetrical maps rather than a more chaotic map. Would be hard to balance though and might give people an unfair advantage.
that's just a recipe for bad balance. Maps that aren't mirrored just means the side you spawn on directly determines your win rate which is very unhealthy for the game. And they have already said multiple times that competitive balance is a big focus of theirs

Even if they wouldn't be included in a competitive format, it'd be fun to have some wacky and not so wacky asymmetrical maps.

It looks like sc2 mix with heroes of the storm. But maybe its because there.was.so.much action no time left to tell how macro works.

i can see that the unit collision with enemy units is either very lax or non existent maybe specifically only with those adorable scorpion dudes. It definitely lends to better gameplay in some ways- a lot less frustration unlike when your silly hellion gets surrounded by broodlings.
Also, this game looks visually stunning and the gameplay feels like a comfortable pace.
ah, yes you address this later on at 43:25. If not obvious, I strongly agree that the small units being slippery is great!

Please have awesome music like Warcraft 2! Music seems to have taken a back seat in a lot of games but it can amp the feeling dramatically. I remember rolling out Orc Juggernauts and just sitting as I hear the epic drums and rocking beats thinking "I'll attack in a minute, first to admire my army and these sick beats"

It looks like there are actually a few new play mechanics here unlike stormgate which sadly seems to have nothing new. I'll have to give this a shot.
First of all, great game, looks super fun and fresh, i will enjoy it. That been said, i kinda want some quality of life changes: 1) team colors a little bit more noticeable, i get that now i dont recognize every unit and is bcs that that i get lost in teamfighs but a little bit more of the team color on every unit will help a lot. i think mercs look completeley diferent army, like if were units from another player. not everything must be purple :P 2) the human extractor buildings for the blue minerals is perma stealth or whal? lol i can barely see the diference betwen the building and the empty minerals.3) this is a little bit useles, but on spectator mode i wish we can see the resources and numbers mirror next to each other with the two players, kinda hard to see the suply numbers, etc. 4)again , this is secondary, but to me every map looks the same, mayby if u make the ground a little diferent colours like more darky or icy, bcs now every one is Mars :P . so sorry to critizes ur game! again, over all it looks fantastic and i cant w8 to play it !
On their kickstarter, a goal that was recently reaached was to enhance team colors, so I imagine it is something they are already planning to implement
Well, it is a couple of years (at least) until release, so there will probably be a couple of changes and additions during that period.

The game looks really interesting overall but I do think there is a sluggishness in the unit movement that feels more like a MOBA than the crispness of sc2. Which may be by design! But is a little offputting for me personally. Regardless I would probably give it a play and see for myself

Everyone I've seen talking about movement, they compared it to SC2 as how smooth the game felt
I think it's simply that the default game speed seems slower. This looks like SC2 on Normal speed.
I think the game feels incredibly smooth personally and is extremely responsive - there are of course many different types of units but generally speaking it feels very close to SC2 and we're in pre-pre alpha.

I dunno why this made me lol so much. I guess I just like knowing that there are devs out there who aren't afraid to criticize their own games, hah hah. Been looking forward to a SC2 alternative for a while and this one definitely has my attention.
Hahahaha, yeah I mean we're still pre-pre alpha, I am confident if the game went live right now it'd be a great, playable game - but that doesn't mean we don't KNOW that there is A LOT that we can still improve upon, for me this is a big positive, speaks to our potential beyond our current power level.

Are there non-sand maps? Frozen wastes, wetlands, forests, some urban locations?
Not at the moment, but definitely in the plans - remember we're in pre-pre alpha so we're happy to test terrain on multiple maps right now, looks can be adjusted later, gameplay is our priority atm!

The game looks dope! Can I just throw out there that both this game and Stormgate had Terran and Zerg as their starting races and as a Protoss main I REALLY want to see a protoss type race! High tech advanced ect; I kinda feel like the hatred of the Protoss race in sc2 has stopped devs from even wanting to make a race like it but there are maaaany like me who love the high tech protoss and would LOVE to see your interpretation of Protoss just like we've seen the Terran and Zerg!
Also please tell me im not on full COPIUM and the protoss race is still under development and coming soon right?..... right?!?!....😭

In the lobby screen 20:37 there was a referee "side" could you talk a bit more about that? Like is it something specifically for tournaments? What actions can a referee take? Does he have a different point of view than a observer? Im basically interested in what the vision for that is

I am however a bit disappointed that i have yet to see any way to get some simcity in, and always having max supply limit feels a bit strange.

Hahaha, voice acting is a WIP. Protectorate can use semi-wall-offs to great extends currently and where you place your buildings is relevant for all factions, but to your point - it isn't *as* important when compared to a game like AOE4, for example where base-building and macro is basically the biggest focal point.
@@WeAreCatZ i also mean things like blocking off a natural and things like proxies or defensively walling off vital infrastructure like workers in sc2, but economy doesnt seem to be nearly as vulnerable here as it is in other rts
You say the landed flux has a much larger amount than the one existing in the map, but they appear smaller.
Nono, flux nodes never mine out, the rich flux drops do mine out, but the mining-rate is much faster (x3+)

I love a lot of what i am seeing from this game! One piece of feedback i have to give, and not really sure where to give it, is that the general feel of a lot of elements of the game is just "StarCraft but not". You've got your Not Terrans with Not Seige Tanks and Not minerals. The Not Zerg have to build Buildings on their Not Creep and it all just feels a bit borrowed. Obviously great games do lots of borrowing of great ideas from other games, and they combine those elements in a way that makes their game shine.
I'm not suggesting you borrow absolutely nothing from StarCraft. Its a great game that has a lot of amazing jdeas you can use to maks Zerospace great, but i would encourage you to make it feel (visually and mechanically) more unique than it does right now, as i said. A lot of it feels too much like StarCraft with new names.
Just wait till we see more of the heroes!

I think the UI needs to be improved. Unit skills floating on top of command bar instead of being integrated inside makes it feel cheap and mobilegame-ish
That's something that could be fixed with a pass from the graphics department without too much difficulty once the dev teams nails the location of various assets.
IMO from a mechanical perspective I'm in full support of the game so far. From a graphical perspective the game needs a second pass on animations to remove some of the sluggishness from the units, and the grell feel like discount zerg instead of their own plant/insect hybrid.
honestly i like the idea of the floating icon, its a huge help for the more casual players to easily see if a building is making something and what that is.

I'm looking forward to this. Much much more than Stormgate - it's too cartoony and like Warcraft instead of Starcraft. This looks great. Only needs more Protoss.
Please, please, please make Keyboard Binding mod-able. Key binding IS the RTS - it should be the most dynamic part. Why? I want to have a key to split my army into two key bindings. I want to be able to set up a bucket key that fills up to X units just for run-by's. I want a near-area F2 key that selects all army but in a limited area. I want my camera to bind to the center-mass of a control group. None of this exists in SC2, but custom bindings could make this game amazing!
Grass creep looks great. Why is resource not a heptite ? Exping and veterancy finally... rest of powers menu looks like a Mengsk faction. Resources hopefully dont run out completely. Change crystals into something that isnt the dollar double pyramid. Options for campaign sc2 style evolution x2 times for things like bunkers 150 hp or turret is great direction. Mammoth MkII with 3 sets of legs does look awesome :) Apocalypse RA2looked cooler than cnc3 mammoth. Consider airfield your source of offmap like RA3 had ability to put inf into bomber to do paradrop. If you make airfields with runways, helicopters that require refill, make them much stronger than those that are essentially airships with unending ammo. Make slots in airfields count. Nukes in general and those 'global' abilities, should not be free, nukes should not even be a thing. Unless you want to make countermeasures. Most RTS-es have tech of 1960-70s with very short ranged weaponry. Ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, all these are nowhere to be found, except slightly longer range arty. CCG Tomahawk. R-17 Elbrus.(descendant of V-2) Newer things like Iskander-M/K, upgrade into aeroballistic Kinzhal hypersonic missile (S-200 AA missile was already) US had Pershing II. Sovs had Oka. Games like SC have melee combat, Automatic weaponry that shoots 1 damage burst. Art direction isnt too toy-like, great. Tank guns should arc over distance a bit. Choppers could use fuel to prevent them from always hovering, promotes ground based AA as well. Turrets could use exp as well. There are things like 2007-vintage S-400, newer 350,500,550. Its not of the US, but keep these in perspective. Yes, Im somebody who spent a lot of time studying all that stuff. Space bugs like starship troopers AA from the first film would be cool too.
SC and WC games didnt have fuel run out. Games like Empire Earth/E:DMW had planes with fuel (EE had helos no fuel tho) Adding limits to support planes etc makes space to make them stronger. (Mi-24 rocket salvo indirect rocket artillery strike -return to base - change mode to direct fire etc) There are plenty ideas you could consider. Cheers :)
