I was 21 and in New Corcoran when this song came out, three years into my life sentence. My cell was one of only a few that could pick up MTV with a makeshift extended antenna. I'm definetly the last one. Had a few tracks I liked, but overall I hated that album. It took me almost a decade to understand the art behind that album and now I really love to listen to it, when I need a soundtrack, where I feel bad, lonely, angry and/or miserable in general.
This album came out the year I graduated high school... I hated it back then, it wasn't the Metallica we knew.... 40 years old, It's a struggle to get through the song without tearing up. Something I've come to realize, Growing older is hearing your music differently. This song fucking rages 🤘🤘🤘

Hey, I know St Anger as an album gets mercilessly ripped to pieces but this song still stands up. 2003 was a strange time, and Metallica were just trying to fit in, while at the same time trying not to fall apart. I loved this song when it came out, still do, and it felt good to have something new from Metallica, even if it wasn't the best they can do.
Well said. Looking back, 2003 was indeed a strange time. Post-9/11, post-Attitude Era, and all these short-form musical artists changing the landscape. Still remember from the SKOM doc how the band had several arguments about how they were even supposed to _sound_ during that time.

I was on a Metallica tribute concert at a club once and there was a pretty large group of dudes (maybe about 10) who were requesting St. Anger to be played They didn't play it. The singer looked at them disgusted.
The energy and the atmosphere of this masterpiece is still just as powerful 20 years later (38 years old born in 1985). One of my personal favourites of Metallica. I always loved that trash can snare
Not gonna sit here and say im a huge metallica fan,im not,but this song touched me in so many ways as a angry teenager always getting into some crazy shit, and every time i listened to this back then and now ,gives me some sort of peace, thanks metallica ❤
St.Anger is amazing when you listen to it when you're angry. And the Metallica boys did an awesome job imo. I don't know how to explain it, but the snare gives it an even more pissed off sound.
I agree, i wouldn't usually go for such a heavy snare sound but it's absolutely spot on for this particular effort. Just fits the tone of the song so well.
The snare sound is much longer and “shinier” or tinner/more sheet metal which is fighting with low heavy riff yet harmonizing with its brutality. I personally would like it just 10% less trashy but its still mastermind act
My dad sent me this and asked me if it reminded me of anything. I said that yeah it did but I couldn't remember what. Well he told me that I used to "dance" to this when I was a baby😂😂😂😂
You gotta love how music brings people together. Black, Brown, and White inmates all going nuts and throwing “the horns” as the worlds biggest Heavy Metal band shows them love❤🤘
Battery, Damage inc., Eye of the beholder, Harvester of sorrow, Dyers eve, Sad but true,...And justice for all, Master of puppets, Fight fire with fire, and Creeping death are all much heavier than snare ang- I mean St anger
@@StAnger-bw3gz I think Damage Inc. actually comes close. And while I enjoy most of the songs you mentioned more than St. Anger. I still think Anger has the heavier riff. It feels much more agressive and in your face than something like Master or Justice. Which are much more complex songs than St. Anger. But, you know, I think that much is obvious.

This song is amazing. You can hear the sadness and anger in Hetfield's voice on every note. This song is one of my absolute favorites... So much emotion.
I like the whole album and it's stoner and nu metal elements. They tried something different there without sounding less aggressive. After St Anger, they just plagiarized their own music - pretty badly.

I don’t care if people hate this, but this album helps me go through a very tough and challenging time in my life. This album is not super polished, astonishing and does not even have a single guitar solo, but it feels… real. This album is raw and real Thank you Metallica❤️
It's interesting that the person who expressed so much dissatisfaction and frustration to St.Anger in the time of release is listening to it from the start to the end. I feel the meaning and the value of St.Anger more and more as time goes by.
This was the first song I've heard of Metallica. I was around 11 years old. Thought they were a nu metal kind of band and stayed away from them. Boy did I regret not looking up their other songs.
It’s hard to hear anything else on the mix because of how loud the drum is. Completely ruins the enjoyment. The song itself isn’t their best work either. It falls flat.
Like 4 or 5 years since this and i still don't get the problem with this album... This song is just pure feeling, you can hear it on every note. All the people with anger problems will understand.
that explains why I started to liked it recently lol ... well I liked the song but I cound't listen to it full... because it was so heavy for me, but now I enjoy it....
4 or 5 years? Over 10 years, bro... But still awesome. And to keep the subject of the comment: I actually was one of the St. Anger haters until I saw Metallica in concert and they played St. Anger. Now I love it... As I love every Metallica album...

Many people hate this song becase OTHERS hated it. And so it spreads like a virus a becomes like a memory to us. But i wish they looked this young today. 😪
@@Skyisgoingbacktopluto yeah it seems the album was purposely made shit. Production and recording wise. We've seen Metallica projects before this album much clearer and cleaner. I highly doubt they just accidentally made it sound very "garage" for lack of a better term. Not the snare tho that was jus lars being lars lol.
They have a long and varied career. Imo the period between 1991 and 2003 --Black Album, Load/Reload, S&M, and St. Anger was their creative zenith. So much variety yet soul and innovation behind everything they do. Still the case with the more recent albums, but they've since fallen into a bit of a familiar rhythm.
Some say this was Metallica's worst album ...But if they actually took the time to look at it from the musical aspect they would see and hear a new ingredient to their repertoire, the raw sound on this album is absolutely BRILLIANT!!! and the fact they did this clip in a prison is totally uplifting for those on the inside and proves Metallica are not judgemental at heart which is a bresh of fresh air for they have always been consistent with their messages. Thank you Metallica from the bottom our your Metallica Family's hearts!!! ❤❤❤
I tried to like it for months but if the songs y were good that thin ass productiion job sounds thin and watered down. It's worse than Justice. Justice also happens to be my favorite Metallica album The production is terrible and harsh, but it also one of the finest technical thrash albums ever recorded. The difference is that Justice had some great songs on it. St. Anger... not so much. If you use a pile of shit as an ingredient in your Kool-Ade it will water it down and might even mask the taste somewhat, but all it's ever going to be is watered down dog shit.

I was 21 and in New Corcoran when this song came out, three years into my life sentence. My cell was one of only a few that could pick up MTV with a makeshift extended antenna. Came out very fuzzy, but I remember this video and tripped out how it was filmed in SQ and the stories within the video. Ended up doing close to 18 years and have been out five years now. Watching this video clearly now on RUclips as a free man, at almost 41 years age, it hits different. Feel the pain of every story within the video. While the door is still open, I hope as many lifers as possible get a second chance and get that parole date.

i’m sure this question may be annoying or you may get it often, but i have to ask, what was the life sentence for?
What about all the victims? Do they get a second chance, too?

Hey, I know St Anger as an album gets mercilessly ripped to pieces but this song still stands up. 2003 was a strange time, and Metallica were just trying to fit in, while at the same time trying not to fall apart. I loved this song when it came out, still do, and it felt good to have something new from Metallica, even if it wasn't the best they can do.
Yes- 2003 was a strange time.
Well said. Looking back, 2003 was indeed a strange time. Post-9/11, post-Attitude Era, and all these short-form musical artists changing the landscape. Still remember from the SKOM doc how the band had several arguments about how they were even supposed to _sound_ during that time.
I disagree, I think this choice is even more baffling in retrospect and it continues to age worse over time.

You can say whatever you want about St. Anger. But the main riff is one of the heaviest riffs they ever wrote.

Ok Serj
Main riff is great. It’s the rest of the song that’s an issue.

The way things are going in this world, they will be using this song for future therapy sessions.
