I used this in one of my Project. Made 2 What-if-parameters, whose values ranged from 1 to 100. Used them as filters, and made a clustered column chart where in I used those 2 values as constant lines. Those constant lines served for me as target values. And based upon the target value stored in a measure, what I did I created 2 different measures which stored colors, and conditionally formatted the values of the totals. Amazing explanation! Thank you @Guyinacube
Nice video! 3 comments about it: 1) What-if parameters are a neat feature for making fast sensitivity analysis (like, this will be the return depending on the price/cost/[select variable] of my product) 2) Using conditional formatting would help you in checking if the values get over your threshold. 3) I still don't know why this single-select slicers can't be created with any column of any table.
Comment: Today I had an extensive Power Bi session (trying to transition from Tableau since where I live Power Bi is more demanded than Tableau) and the Parameter bit had me worried because I couldn’t wrap my head around it, so I came across this video and I didn’t realize how simple this was to understand. Thank you!!!!
I have been working on this for a bit, y9u can use 0 as the base and then increment by .1, just an option. Also, you can use the what if to see the impact on costs. Example you need to increase sales by 1.43% BUT my costs went up 6%, how much would we then need to make, its awesome!
Hi Patrick. Fantastic and clear instructions as always. I have a question and sorry for asking. I have created a measure that categorizes sales: not accomplished, accomplished, exceded. I use this measure in a table visual. Is there any way to filter the table by the measure values. "What if" may help? Thanks a lot and best regards Carlos
Can I use what if parameter on a gantt chart visual? i.e I try to add 10 days on the start date of my project, then the chart will be updated to show the new schedule - starts day is 10 days later.
is there a way that you can apply multiple 'what if' parameters with a button, rather than the output table repopulating after each parameter is changed?
Hi Patrick Is there any way in power Bi to define input fields(i.e Start date, end date and Id)When the report is published, allow the user to enter these values and then generate the report based on these input values?
This is awesome man! soometimes we know functionalities are there but we dont know how to use them for business purpose. plz keep making these kind of videos.
Hi! do you know if it's possible to reset a What If parameter back to default? Once I publish the report and users start playing with the parameters, the default feature is basically inexistent?
Hello ,Thanks it's an awesome feature. One question Is there a way we can hide the values in the what if parameter.I need to see only the slider of the what if parameter. Appreciate any help
Thanks. Great video. I would like to use What if parameters and link them to a filter. I have a Month and a Year column - I would like to use the single value slicer of the what if parameter to link that to a Year filter and month filter respectively. Is this possible?
Vedio is very helpful ,thanks, How to read the what if parameter selected value in a different page. If we have a chart and selection control , it is working, but if the chart is in different page and selection is in different page.it is not working.
Hi Patrick! I'm trying to use multiple parameters in different measures to create a forecasting/savings what if scenario. Do you have a topic on that one too? So the result of 4 selected (parameter filters) should show up in my table.
could anyone please share a sample workbook for this? I get "Column 'Table - 1 Value' in table 'Table - 1' cannot be found or may not be used in this expression." error when I try to use the value of parameter.
Is it possible to create 'what if parameter' for each of the month (individually)? i.e I would to forecast the sale for January to be 10%, but the rest of the months are going to be 50%.
Hey Patrick, Great explanation. Quick question though? Is there a way to use this feature with Direct Query? Do you know if it is in the backlog? Regards,
Hey, I needed some help for my report. I want to find out my day on day growth %(Constant Value) if i know my starting value, my target value and number of days to achieve it. Mathematically it becomes a geometric progression where wew know the sum, first term and n. How do i find the common ratio r (%growth)?
Would it be possible to do a measure calculating automatically the exact threshold required to reach the desired point? Would look like 1,000,000=total sales x threshold (tbd) It would avoid manual computation, could give extra precision if needed and could be displayed directly as a percentage
Guys, is it possible to pass a parameter/variable to run a python script with a slicer in power BI? the idea is that users have an input parameter (Slicer) and that variable picked serves as a variable in a python script
Hi Patrick! Nice video! Is that possible to use a what-if parameter to send a subset of values from a main report to a drill through report? This subset of values are dynamic values (comes from a fact table). Thanks!!
Hello, Patrick, Thanks for the video, I have a doubt in creating a scatter plot Is it possible to set the axis measures dynamically, for eg I have huge list of Measures like Total sales, category sales,Subcategory sales , product sales, store sales all these measure titles are in slicer. So when the user select any two of these it will automatically set the axis value based on the selection. For instance, If the user select Category sales and store sales so X axis will be category sales and Y axis will be store sales and plot the chart based on the sames values. Please let me know is it possible to achieve in power bi Thanks in Advance
Hi sir, I want to input text in power bi, we can say like a form. A user inputs some information in form of text .(Not using power apps) Can you please suggest if it is possible or not ? If possible please suggest a way.
Great man, awesome video once again. One question, what if we want to give a discount to a given product and need to know how much we should sale including all our products to make it worth?
Dear Sir, I want you to make a video on:- Like I have two slicers and one dynamic x-axis chart. In one of the slicers I have top n (5,10,15,20) and on the other slicer, I have customer and product. I have a dynamic x-axis chart showing sales by customers or product. So, when I select the customer and top 5 it will show in the dynamic chart or when I select top 20 and then select products it will show top 20 products by sales in the same dynamic x-axis chart. Please, sir, do a video on this.
I would like the opposite. I want to decrease the value. I guess that I can use negative figures, correct? Also, we would need to divide instead of multiply. We want to see how hard collectors are going to need to work to bring down the high value of outstanding invoices.
This is the best explanation of What If parameters I have ever seen. Very simple but very comprehensive. Thanks bro. You made my day.

Good walkthrough of What if parameters Patrick. It's perfect for adjusting budget and forecast scenarios

Great Patrick.Thank you !!
Is there a way to use separate what if parameters in every single month ...? Like having 12 slicers..??
can I also use the parameter in a calculated column?
You can't. Calculated columns must be determined during processing/refreshing of the model.
@@MrPandrewski thanks for your response. I realised this after a few hours of posting this!
Thank you, Patrick. Your videos are nicely done and polished. Just starting out with PBI and I keep coming back to learn more.

Does using over 20 parameters can cause performance issues for PBI report?
