Cool to see this. Elevator Action was such a memorable game from my childhood. I never got very far though. 😅 It might have even been featured on the game show “Starcade”-(that would be a great topic for a video btw).
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Hi. Is there any input lag in the new release of Returns? City Connection have become pretty infamous for this. Especially the S-Tribute Cotton pack.
I absolutely adored Elevator Action as a kid. Don't think I played the arcade version more than a handful of times but loved the NES port to death. For years wanted to check out Elevator Action Returns but never had the chance until I saw it randomly added to the eShop it's all I've imagined and more.
Ah, memories. I played it tons in the 80's. (Arcade) Fun game, catchy tunes and not an unfair game that eats coins. (Looks at Ghost and Goblins for exsample)
Thanks for remaking this video, it's one of my favorite classic games along with Dragon's lair, TMNT, Time Pilot. I enjoyed the information and light hearted humor.
I’m so glad you re-recorded this episode as this is also one of my favorite games from when I was a kid and still is. The added newer info is incredible as well. I had no idea there were so many newer games as well as the handheld differences. I have some “new” games to acquire now. Thanks Pat!
I was just playing this game yesterday on my MiSTer. Nothing quite like shooting the lights out, dropping a couple baddies, and making a run for it. Such a fun little game.
Elevator Action is easily my favorite arcade game next to Mr. Do! Back in '84 we stayed at a motel on Flaglar Beach, Florida and there was an Elevator Action cabinet in our stairwell. I was hooked. My record on MAME (no cheats) is level 11. I also had the Game Boy version in 1998, I had no idea it was created in 1991...
Elevator Action is the transitional game between the single screen action game (and Crazy Climber) and the arcade Walk and Gun shooter. These are scrolling games (primarily in the arcade) where the character walks slowly and shoots and maybe gets punchy/kicky. Games like Green Beret, Rolling Thunder, Shinobi, Robocop, or Spartan X. Many of these games allow the character to move quickly vertically in a prescribed fashion (like Rolling Thunder), but these games usually don't have complicated horizontal platforming. I don't know if there's another game before Elevator Action that's a side scroller were you walk, shoot, and duck. The only obvious "Run and Gun" that predates it I can find is the top down "Front Line".
I remember stumbling upon the game in Disney Quest during my high school senior trip. It being the most memorable part of the trip either speaks to how fun the game is or how weird my priorities are lol.
Was that the name of the huge arcade in the '80s on the first floor of the Contemporary Hotel? I've been trying to research it but couldn't remember what it was called

If you pick up 'Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration' compilation (for Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S & Microsoft Windows), it has the arcade version of 'Cloak & Dagger' (same one featured in the movie) that you can play 😎🎮

Ahh Elevator Action. This game introduced me to the simple thrill of crushing my foes with elevator cars. I still think Otto's Quartermaster was a traitor because that's the only reason I can see for him or her to issue pistol clips that only hold three bullets instead of whatever was standard for the Pistol Otto was issued.
I used to play this in the Arcade in my childhood. This was one of my Top10 Arcade Games of alltime, and I have to say that I don't like a single Port or Clone of this Game, but only the original.
For those who are having controller trouble with the Steam version of Elevator Action Returns Right click at Elevator Action -Returns- in Steam Library -> Manage -> Controller layout -> Change Template layout to Gamepad. You might need to make sure your controller is turned on. For some odd reason my controller was defaulting to a weird Keyboard + Mouse emulation and I had to look up the solution in the Steam Forums. Make sure it is set to Gamepad. I use an Xbox 360 wireless gamepad.
That is my favorite arcade game. Funny, I never saw it back in its day. But once I got the MAME emulator and gobbled up games from a web page (also to make my own MAME web page later using the roms and making screenshots) in around 1998 I came across Elevator Action. Very addictive. Thanks for reviewing it!
I’ve loved this game since I was a kid in the 80s. I have the arcade version on my Switch and play it all the time. I didn’t realize the sequel had been released on Switch! I’m so excited to play that with my kids.
@patmanqc - There’s an audio editing error around the 11:12 point. I don’t know if it’s worth reuploading the video to fix, but wanted to let you know in case you hadn’t noticed it.
I was a little boy when I saw that game in a local cinema. They had a couple of games in a small room which also included Exerion. Somehow the game with the Elevators fascinated me the most and stuck with me for some years. Unfortunately, Arcade games were banned vor children blow the age of 16 (Germany) shortly after, so they closed down the section of the cinema. We still had the game in a local outdoor pool, so I could play it from time to time :). Good times
This is easily the best video on Elevator Action! This game was really something new and exciting when it came out! I played it a ton in my local arcade. It's great that the NES got a version that's almost arcade-perfect. It was made by Micronics, who also did a good job in porting Ghosts n Goblins and Twin Cobra to the NES. Most retro youtubers think it's trendy to hate on Micronics, but luckily you know what you're talking about and don't join the crowd! Considering the cartridge size limitations they had to work with, I say they also did a good job in porting 1942 and Tiger Heli. A lot of people hate the "music" in 1942 and it really does suck, but Micronics simply replicated the arcade music for their NES port, so the criticism should be levelled at Capcom, not at Micronics who managed to fit such an advanced game onto a meager 41k cartridge. For Ikari Warriors, Micronics were given the same cartridge size as Commando, which was a substantially more simple game and whose NES port (made by Capcom) was full of flicker anyway. Thanks for the great content, and we're all looking forward to more!
I love this game, I have the NES version and it is one of my favorite NES games of all time. I didn't know this was originally an arcade title but it makes sense.

Got the NES version, the Saturn EA Returns, the original game long unlocked, and US and Japanese Taito compilations with both arcade vames on them. Even got the Game Boy title, which isn't so much a port as it is a new game.
It's way cool that Elevator Action Returns has recently been released to the masses, as it's one of the best sequels out there, and especially so after such a long break between games. I actually owned it for the Saturn back in the day, and while I never saw it in arcades, and I don't believe many ever even knew about it until now. It's really a great game that stays true to the original, but is also very much a new game all around.
