Hi Chris, just found your channel and I love it! So many of these youTubers think you've got thousands to spend on plants, pots, soil, fertilizer, pesticides. I love to bonsaii on a shoestring....I snag leaves off succs at the supermarket - grow them up, plant them in any household item that can be drilled from margerine containers, old teapots up to 3- gallon plastic paint bins. (I refuse to spend $40 on a little clay bonsaii pot). I'm always picking up gravel from driveways to help with drainage, and propagate like crazy. I hang weights off branches instead of buying wire - works just as well. Chopsticks, toothbrushes, 1-liter water bottles with tiny holes drilled into the cap instead of a watering can. Beer works great as fertilizer.... I'm going back six years to check out all your videos....keep up the good cheap work and to hell with all those $100 plant hangers and terrariums!
Outstanding video Chris, essential cheap equipment. Boy, have Amazon come a long way in the bonsaii dept... The only thing I would recommend is the APIPI 10 Pcs Mini Plastic magnifying glasses for $7.99.....they ar so damn handing for really getting into the plant and checking out what's really going on. If you don't want all of them, they make great stocking stuffers! Really good job Chris!!!
I’ve been wanting to get into bonsai but was so intimidated by it. So happy to have come across your channel. Your tips and advice are easy to follow as well as realistic ☺️

Love your videos! You had a potatoe bush a few years back. Wondering how it’s doing? I came across one before I saw your video and bought it but wonder how it reacts to root work and when to prune. Thanks for any guidance you can give. :)
I use an old make-up brush that I had lying around to brush off any dirt that might have fallen on the leaves. It does a good job and is a lot cheaper than actual bonsai brushes.
Mate, your videos are great, and your bonsai are fantastic! The advice with the plastic pots was especially valuable; perhaps people might also be interested in how you go about the final (and more expensive) pots for your finished plants. I started to make pots myself out of cement, which is also very cheap; they can also be dyed with pigment, if needed.
I found around one square meter of discarded black mesh in a skip; those meshes can be found all over the place here on construction sites, and I'd say those bonsai mesh pads are quite overpriced, to be honest.
Hey, hope everything is alright, I see you haven’t uploaded in a long time. I really enjoy your Portulacaria videos!

Soo good. Your vids make this so accessible.
Love it! So glad it was helpful! :) I know bonsai can be so ambiguous sometimes, so I wanted this to help people have some simple places to start.

Where do you get your short terracotta pots?
For mesh, I bought a cheap roll of drywall mesh tape at the hardware store.
Love that!! That's a great idea :) I used to use old window screen material that I would cut into squares with scissors , too :) Thanks for sharing!
@@PoorMansBonsai Yes! I was using old window screen, until I ran out.
