I really appreciate that this video didn’t feel like an ad. You gave us a lot of good information about which tools were the most useful and that we could even do good work with garden center and hardware store tools! This video made me realize I don’t care for my tools the way I probably should to make them last. I would like a video on tool maintenance.
I'm glad that came across - thanks. I have a relationship with a tool supplier yes, but I still have integrity :) My tool care needs improvement, but it's definitely on the video list, thanks for the suggestion!
Now this is the sort of video i can enjoy my morning tea with Darren. informative with a touch of slick editing and humour. I hadn't realised that important difference between carbon and stainless. It's funny how we all agonise over the same tool lists on amazon! My best tool is actually my carbon steel root shears. They stay sharp and I tend to use them for a lot of fine branch pruning because I can keep that edge honed...now I know why. I bet your toold have created some great desert island bonsai 😉
Finally another video, a bit wacky but exceedingly joyful! Good vibes, really enjoyed it! I’ve got some pots from Wazakura and the quality is top notch, as is the packaging: Japanese perfection and attention to details. Highly recommended and… I’d LOVE some Wazakura bonsai scissors!
Finally some details about pruning shears. I really needed to know how to cut them with home tools. Cause I only have branch pruner🙂. That's why I'd love some Wazakaru Bonsai scissors ✂️.
Firstly I'd like to say thank you for your content. I've watch many of your videos and I always find them easy to watch and very informative... you couldn't ask for better! I am planning on finally attempting to make my first bonsai: weeping Crepe Myrtle cultivar impulse bought at my local nursery over a year ago! 😅 Absolutely ridiculous, I know. Anyway... I'd LOVE some Wazakura bonsai scissors! I'll be sure to put them to good use. Keep up the good work!
I’d love some Wazakura scissors. I too have found carbon steel bonsai tools are more durable in the long run. But admit I have stainless steel ones, and had often had more. My big thing is comfort in the hands. It has to be comfortable, especially when having to tend to more than a handful of bonsai.
I wish I'd waited a week and seen this video before buying some cheap tools from Amazon.... I'd only just decided to get some proper tools after getting interested in bonsai about a year ago. Oh well, you live and learn I suppose!.............. I'd Love some Wazakura bonsai scissors!

I'd LOVE a pair of Wazakura bonsai scissors! Especially for the roots, as I don't have the best options right now, and it's slightly annoying to clean between jobs, instead of between trees.
Hi Amanda, I pulled your name from the virtual hat, please can you email me or DM me on instagram, the details are in the video description. Please ensure you only respond to messages from @grobonsai with the verified check next to the name :)
I'd love some Wazakura scissors! I am at the stage of slowly upgrading my tools, and TBH, root scissors were going to be low on the list - for some reasons they are not as "sexy" as cutters for the canopy. Not fair, really!
Good video Darren. I've got sufficient tools so I'll let someone else win. Tip for cleaning sap off, use barbeque grill cleaner, scrub with a plastic pot cleanng pad, rinse and oil. A lady's diamond coated nail file is useful for blending nicks if the tool is dropped etc. Keep up the vids.
Can I ask what the yellow handled saw is at 2:29 lease Darren? I have a 'proper' bonsai saw on my wish list but if I can buy one cheaper, so much the better.
Hi Mike, here is an amazon uk link, it ships from china though. Maybe you can find similar - I'm not sure. amzn.to/3t9txyZ It's an affiliate link, I may earn a small commission thanks
