You somehow know how the people felt, Hitler down to the littlest boy-soldier. I was amazed at that skillful film making.

Mr. Bruno Ganz is a great actor, he delivers a great and beautiful performance in this film without him the film would not be as successful as it has been. Great director, production, actors and film crew, excellent film.
For those who may not know, Joachim Fest was also the author of "The Banality of Evil" -- a fascinating study of how simply ORDINARY most members of the Nazi hierarchy were. They were merely ordinary people (not necessarily monsters), placed in the position of allowing themselves to do monstrous things. And so they did. We've all been taught to think of Nazis as abnormal, demented beasts -- but the lesson we should learn is that virtually anyone else could and might act the same given the opportunity and incentive. Perhaps this is why even Hitler himself is portrayed at the beginning of the film as seeming to come across as a reasonable and considerate person... and yet there was a motivation within him that addresses the dark parts that might be found in anyone. If you enjoyed "Der Untergang" I strongly encourage you to check out "The Banality of Evil".
"Those who may not know" are in fact right, as the one who authored the theory and the book on "The Banality of Evil" is Hannah Arendt, not Joachim Fest. While your synopsis and the argument you're making are absolutely correct, you should definitely have checked this important point and avoided posting misinformation.

The movie "Der Untergang" is NOT a nazi propaganda, but it is a movie about our disgraceful history. It should help especially young Germans today to learn what went wrong and which circumstances led to the nazi regime and most important of all: that something like this should never happen again, not in Germany and not soemwhere else in the world.
Disgraceful? You are quite self-hating. We came to Amerika when I was 4 - I barely know my own language. THe SS did horrible things, but my grandfather, a Hauptmann in the Heer, a Ritterkreuztrager, had nothing to be ashamed of.
Never, under any circumstances, will I see any russian as an enemy. We share so much history, the good and the bad. We should remember what unites and connects us and move towards a brighter future than our grandparents could possibly ever imagine. Greetings from Germany.
