I agree, a poor attitude can ruin a trip. Positive mental outlook is a must. I'll admit though, easier said than done sometimes. This turned out to be an incredible trip. It did get tough at times, but all ended up going well! Makes for a real adventurous feeling time. What a trip! I am glad you enjoy the video. Thank you
Excellent video. Watched it with my dad. He enjoyed it too. Reminded him of the many fishing trips he's done in the Moosehead Lake/100 mile wilderness area.
Awesome trip brother. Great scenery and good food and friends. I’m glad you got your hat back. I need to get in on a trip like that. This looked like so much fun 👍🏻👍🏻
Glorious video Justin with great company. Loved the loon's nest and… hats off to Craig what a star I wonder if your delicious food would have tasted quite as good without your Grandfather's presence. Whitney Point view was beautiful and love the history. Turbulent last night.
Craig is a good dude! I am very thankful for what he did. I would have been pretty bummed if I had lost it forever. The food would not have been as good. There is so much history on and underneath this lake. Extremely fascinating stuff. That last night was rough LOL. Mother nature was sure to remind us all throughout this trip that she is in charge. Demanding respect. It all turned out great, this was one fun trip!!
Sunrise day four was on point. I am also glad you saw that Deer swimming lol. I saw some fresh deer milk duds on the Islands at squam and I was awfully confused. Next mystery, do chipmunks swim...there were a ton of them on the Island. As usual seemed like an awesome trip, with awesome food.
Watching you do these trips is very motivating. Just a bit north and east of this lake is Camp Freedom, my snowmobile house. It’s about an hour car ride or less. Eustis and Stratton Maine are home to Flagstaff Lake. It has campsites that are part of The Great Northern Canoe Trail. The southern end of the lake is The Bigelow Preserve and mountains. The mountains go from 1100 foot base at the lake straight up to about 4000 ft peak. It’s right in your face. There are some sites on the north shore which should be a fantastic view. It’s a future goal of mine, you should investigate this place I think it might suit you. It has serious history too, Benedict Arnold!
Flagstaff sounds awesome. I am going to look into it. Thank you for sharing that information with me. Much appreciated. Always looking for good information on different places to adventure
Getting ready to do third annual Flagstaff camping with my cousin from Florida. We do a small motor boat and camp on the primitive sites. The awesomeness of this great wilderness is non the less something to behold. I'm 65 and wish I had started doing this many years ago. Never to late though!
@@vicktdock wow cool! That’s what I’d like to do, get a small boat and hit up one of those spots, maybe in a kayak or canoe. I don’t have time during the year , I’m planning on a XC ski or snowshoe trip when the lake freezes in winter. Have fun
Looks like an excellent trip other than the wind . Had to screenshot the flowers. I’m not familiar with them . Have an older friend that lived that direction up until recently. I always envy yalls summers ( winter not so much 😁 ) Our lows are 78 to 80 right now. Time spent with friends heals the soul . Have a great evening
Some of that wind was rugged!!! Made for an interesting situation for sure. Those flowers are white Ladies slippers. Quite rare. Pink is more common. This was the first time I had ever seen white ones. Really cool stuff. Winter i s my favorite time of year. I don't like the heat all that much Lol! Thank you for watching and commenting John. Much appreciated
Great Job Justin! That looked like a great time with great food and friends! By reading the comments below I figure that was Craig's brother or relative, will have to check his YT stuff out. Those loons are so fabulous to listen to at night! That wind was brutal! I am gun-shy of whitecaps after taking an early Spring swim not long after iceout. Good thing we were close to shore but it sure isn't a fun experience. Taking a swim on a Lake that big would be even worse. I am thinking about taking some rescue/self rescue classes to be better prepared for something I hope never happens. I am also hoping not to ever have a Bear experience, I do take a cooler with me but not all my eggs are in the same basket, I still use an Ursack and bear hang for essentials. One of these days a bear is going to happen. Looks like an awesome hammock, I have looked at those but ultimately decided to be able to switch out my insulation when I want for the appropriate temps. I see you could probably always add an additional UQ if temps get lower. 30 is a great temp to start with! Im hoping to head to the ADKs soon again! See you there! 🙂 Jeff
This was a fantastic time! Loons are such cool creatures! They really put a show on for us for pretty much the duration of the trip. That wind was nuts man. And those white caps,,oh boy. It was a pretty intense situation a few times for me. Not the first time I have encountered those conditions...I expect it wont be the last. So I figure it is just a matter of time before I end up going for a swim. Turns out all three of us were each thinking at one point, ..this could be it, just might be going for a swim. The experience in real time was much more intense than the camera lets on. A class or two is not a bad idea. I do have a lot to learn. I bet going in right after ice out was not a fun thing to experience. The hammock is awesome. 30 seems like a good place to start, but I wont lie, I would prefer 40. I was actually very surprised at how comfy I was in the 30 though. I though there was a good chance it would be too hot. It was not. I really like these hammocks. And you can easily add another under quilt to bring that rating down. I would like to get back to the ADK as well. It is so nice out there. Happy adventuring man!
There is some really fascinating Maine logging history and many books written about those lakes and that area. Maine author Louise Dickinson Rich lived just through the woods there on the Rapid River. And kinda funny that I’m currently reading a book titled The Richardson Lakes. It’s a great book, I recommend. Thanks for another awesome video! A couple summers ago I stayed at Black Cat Brook campsite. Beautiful place. I’ve visited 29 states, and I’m so happy and fortunate to have been born in such a beautiful place. I love my state. Maine and New Hampshire have some of the most gorgeous landscapes in the country.
The Richardson lakes are awesome! I am going to get that book! Thank you for the recommendation. I love it here in New England as well. The landscape and history fascinates me.
Mother nature was having some fun with us. LOL. But she didn't treat us too bad, she was pretty kind at times as well. What a fun trip. Thank you for watching. I see you finished your canoe build! That i s exciting. Do you have any good adventure planned out for the season?
@@ItsGoodintheWoods Justin, I just returned from a canoe trip from Moosehead Lake to Chamberlain Lake on the Allagash. Rugged trip. Had to make a few changes to the plan along the way though. I was only one week removed from Covid and didn’t have the strength I thought I had.
This looks like fun. Head winds are a nightmare either biking or kayaking. They turn a fun pedal or paddle (bike or kayak) into an extreme workout, maybe even defeat forward progress in a kayak or canoe. I am weird, but I love bike gloves paddling.
It was a very fun trip. That wind was brutal. There were times when we were hardly making any forward progress at all. It was a very long 6 mile paddle lol
This is an awesome video! Well done. My family has had a place on Mooselookmeguntic Lake since I was 8 yrs old and I can't believe I've never taken a trip like you did. I'm headed up for 3 weeks this summer though! Gonna put this on my plans! Nice loons!
Dude! This must have dropped when I was on vacation. Great trip! Love the basket thing you used to cook the lamb. I know those have been around forever but I really could use one! Maine looks so beautiful.. As someone who loves island camping that looks like a must see place for me.
You would love it out there. Let me know if you ever get out there. It is a place worthy of visiting again. It would be cool to meet up out there. Those baskets are handy. You should go out and get one. Worth it. Thanks for stopping by. I hope you and your family are well. Cheers dude
So glad I happened upon this video. Quality adventure! I'm a Maine-ah who recently fell in love with canoeing. I'd love to chat with you and pick your brain some time.
You are lucky to live in Maine. It is a good place to fall in love with canoeing. There is a lot of nice water out there. Feel free to reach out. I am happy to help the best I can
Thank you Steven. Looking back on it, I would say my favorite part is when we finished our paddle against the wind and rough water. We made it, I was pumped up, thankful none of us went for a swim and glad to be on solid ground. It was pretty awesome
those loons look big/large! I heard they can be aggressive / territorial . bird orcas of the northern lakes! they fly down here to southern New England for the winter. I heard them calling on thankgiving day out on the salt water. they have glands that allow them to swim and feed in both salt and fresh water ( I looked that up!) thx!
Loons can get to be quite large! I had one surface right next to my canoe a few years ago. It was huge. I hear they can be quite aggressive as well, although I have never seen it. They are such magnificent creatures. I got to see some baby loons this past summer. 2 of them, they were only a few days old. We watched them for an entire weekend. It was incredible.
This trip was in mid June. Maine is an incredible place! So beautiful. I ust returned from an 8 day canoe trip on Flagstaff lake in Maine. It was stunning!
This is a year later but I have several questions. Love watching your trips by the way. I use these to help plan my trips. Where do you get detailed maps of campsite locations? Are they first come first served? Do folks share campsites? If someone is at your planned site do you plan in alternatives? Do you go through an outfitter? Oh, perhaps I just miss it but do you give a date ofyour trip? I have been to lake Richardson twice but not canoeing. I did not have bugs last week of august.
On this trip I didn't have a map, I was using a screen shot of my buddies map. This was a bit of a last minute trip for me. Unfortunately I don't have a map of the area. Sites are not first come first served. You reserve the sites, for a cost, at the South Arm Campground in Andover Maine. However, you do not need to pay for and reserve a site. They can be free use. But it is a gamble. If you are using a site without reservation, a paddler can show up whenever they do, if they reserved the site, you have to leave. Campsites are not shared, but some sites have several cells. Some do not. Each cell has its own campfire ring. This trip took place in early/mid June. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions feel free to reach out. I am happy to help as best I can.
@@ItsGoodintheWoods Another recommendation for paddling in this area or in the big lakes further north: cook a simple breakfast or get up early to get on the water early as the wind is almost always stronger in the afternoon.
