Big Air Kite Test 3 - 2023 Cabrinha Nitro : North Orbit : Duotone Evo DLAB : & More

  • *PLEASE NOTE - I made a couple little mistakes in this video in regards to the bar, the Cab COS bar I was riding does have 18-24m line length options. I was sent a bar with 18/4 already on it, and the 2m extensions in a side packet, and then didn't even notice it setting up because it was so windy each session and I was pretty excited to get on the water. Also, the little 'metal' piece in the middle of the bar is ceramic*
    For part 3 of my big air kite comparison, I was fortunate enough to have Cabrinha send out a 9m Nitro & Bar for me to put through its paces because we don't have them down here in New Zealand. As the first brand to get in touch months back, I have to say I liked their confidence but was a bit apprehensive about what their expectation was for how long it would take, and what quality they would expect from the video as this is not my profession, and just a hobby for me as you can tell by my editing skills.
    Thankfully, and to their credit, they literally just sent the kite and haven't been in touch since except to confirm it arrived, and it's taken me weeks to get the wind I needed, and then more time to put the video together.
    As always I'm riding these sessions in big air conditions, and comparing the kite to my other favourite kites, either the ones I have bought personally, or have borrowed from local riders.
    I am also excited to mention another brand since Cabrinha has sent me another kite to review, so I already am started on my next project, we just need the wind! I wish I could get these done faster, but getting the conditions, and then the time to put them together is a slow process
    After the next video, some videos I'd like to do are as follows: Orbit 23 vs 24 or an 8m Kite comparison in over 40 knots. Between my friends, I have access to the following 8m kites: Duotone Evo Dlab, Core XR7, Ozone Edge v11, and North Orbit 23, so I think that would be a fun one (for me anyways), to see how high I can woost on each, and how radical all the loops feel... but I'm also very open to any suggestions on topics so please Like & Subscribe, and comment below!
    Filmed as always on my GoPro 11

    When are you planning to do a review on the 2024 North Orbit? Seriously though, North should just give you a sponsorship, or even have you test their pre released kites. Your videos, and unbiased positive feedback of the Orbits in comparison to all the other flagship kites, and interactions with the fellow youtube kiter community have probably contributed to more Orbit sales than any team rider has. You're videos are awesome, I always get super excited anytime you drop a new video or post. Take care sir!

    Just a quick fact update... Cabrinha COS control (and actually 02 quickloop) come with 18m lines +2 +4 m extensions. The COS bar in the video has this configuration so any length between 18m and 24m in 2m increments can be ridden with the stock control system.

      Great comment, I totally didn't notice because I was told the bar was coming to me with 22m lines and 2m extensions, and the bar arrived with the 18/4 combination already on the bar, and the additional 2m on the side. Would be nice to know your opinion about it. Does the approach work or is it another marketing trick? I ride the north orbit, but on mega windy days would use an XR6 7m which I’ve set all my PR’s on, but I way prefer the catch and heliloop of the orbit. Is there a kite that you would say boosts like the XR but catches and loops similarly to the orbit?

    • @jasonofmontreal
      @jasonofmontreal  3 месяца назад +1

      I used to do the same (as per my first comparison video), 8m xr7 for woosting, 9-11m orbits for regular sessions/progression. For kites in the middle (non aluula), the Flysurfer Era might do the best for a bit of each, or the rebel sls which is so easy to boost with, and loops very well too (check out my videos in those kites). If you want to splash out, of course the Evo dlab is the overall top of the heap.

    coming from the neo, it seems that the evo sls is well sought after these days, what s the best cheaper alternative that has the same feel and helps with progressing and it’s good all around, more interested in the low end (no 5 struts)

    • @jasonofmontreal
      @jasonofmontreal  10 месяцев назад

      I've only tried the dlab evo, but I would imagine the standard evo and sls are great for overall progression. As per my videos, I would choose an Orbit over them myself, mainly for the easy progression with kiteloops, but if you are not looking for 5 strut then the North Reach is a great option, my wife rides those after learning on neos

      I have not flown them yet, but a friend of mine who is the same level of rider has been riding a new 9m (he previously rode '23) and he does prefer it for it's similar performance, but improved stability. He did say that it didn't feel quite as quick however as the 2023 so I think there is an argument that in larger size (10 and up), that the '23 much be a better option, but in the smaller size where you are likely to ride in stronger winds, then the 2024 would be the move

    • @jasonofmontreal
      @jasonofmontreal  11 месяцев назад

      For big air, I pump Aluula kites to 8psi, and other kites to around 10-11psi. This would be from the conditions, and possibly a bit of me feeling out the kite as that was only 5-10mins into my first time on it, and the wind was a very gusty/holey 25-40 knots... As I mentioned in the review, the kite holds up beautifully in 25-30ish, but once you start getting around 35+ it gets more shakey than some of the other kites I'm talking about.

      I have tried them a couple times, but wasn’t a big fan for big air specifically. They have a nice tight loop so they’re easier for loop progression than say an XR, but still too heavy on the bar pressure for me to be one of the better progression options, and not a ton of power for going big woosting etc. I think a Reach, Reedin, or perhaps Dice/Evo Sls are probably preferable in this category for me.

    Hi Jason.
    From what I understood the Nitro, is particularly fast in "catching" you after a loop. Still, you announce a "safe looping height" of 5 m witch is about the same you've announced in a previous video for the Supermodel from Reedin.
    I've been riding a supermodel for the last two years going for 7 to 12 m jumps, freeriding and foiling ... In your opinion, will a Nitro make a significant difference in "building my confidence "on 6 - 7 m kiteloops compared to my supermodel ?
    Thank you for your videos !

    • @jasonofmontreal
      @jasonofmontreal  7 месяцев назад +1

      I find the nitro better for loop progression than the reedin v3 I tested a while back, but still most 8/9m kites are safe to loop if you know how and are consistently jumping over 5m. The size of the kite you’re trying with will matter a lot too of course, I suggest learning at first with an 8m. Every year kites get a bit better, so the first videos ratings were only compared to the kites at the time

      That’s tricky to say… the kites I’m testing tend to all be pretty good, but I do take very good care of them. I also sell/buy new kites every year or two so I’m not using them as long as you might need to to see crazy deterioration

      @jasonofmontreal  10 месяцев назад +1

      The kites are still fantastic, with more power and pull however on loops, I still find them more challenging for loop progression than say an orbit or nitro, but it every other way they’re probably superior. I had a bad line snap from friction where the the trust bar meets the v splitter and the ensuing crash popped my bladder in one, but thankfully it was repaired. I do recommend swapping out the v splitter on any 2023 trust bars for the older models. Waiting to hear back from duotone about this

      @@Jonpilo-uz1yf the centre line on my 3 month old trust bar snapped from rubbing on the edge of it's new v splitter, because this happened mid jump my kite went into an aggressive powered loop and down into the was with impact, where the metre high waves then pulled it again the lines that had wrapped over the wing tips
      Hopefully Duotone recall the new splitters, I'm waiting to hear from the shop i bought t from with what they have to say about it

      I'm really curious to know if it will help to maintain the awesome functionality of the auto-unwind over time... because I was really impressed with how smooth it was... and does that annoying metal piece mean it won't wear as quickly as every other auto-unwind I've ever had does...
