If I'm being totally honest, I think a gun transformation for him is more than a little ridiculous. I mean, once he transforms, he suddenly has to rely on whoever happens to be around to fire him to be of any use in battle, whereas if he's something like this, he can still contribute in battle in his alt mode and not have to rely on Starscream or Soundwave or whoever else happens to be nearby.
Actually, there are a lot of instances where G1 Megs went into alt mode and kept himself in the air to fire on enemies without using size shifting for a larger radius of damage. Remember, he doesn't lose his ability to fly in gun mode. They usually had someone hold him and had him size shift because they were usually firing on something that needed pinpoint aim (Remember, he's been held by huge bots and humans alike, so his size shifting is part of his character that we look past.). The coolest time that was referenced was the Marvel comics issue 13 where he was stuck in his alt mode and can't think for himself and is found by a hood who uses Megs to try to take over as a big time mobster. It's like Shockwave, he could be held by someone, fly/hover and fire or use his feet as a stand in alt mode to be self reliant.
RowdyRodimus it's still stupid like how can a gun fly and he doesn't have the same mobility he has in robot mode which has the same firepower like him floating as a gun he can easily be hit
When I first saw him in tank mode, I instantly fell in love with the molded-in reactive armor. It just added even more character to the toy. (For those who don't know, reactive armor is a commonly-used type of tank armor which basically works to counteract incoming explosives and tank shells and what-not by just exploding back at them. Yep.)
I managed to find this guy at my walmart randomly one day and have loved it ever sense. The paint is good. The head sculpt is the best i've seen for Megs. And the tank is just so well done with the moving treads. It has flaws of course. But for what it is trying to do. It did a good job in my mind. I see tons of people buying this figure daily in the facebook groups I am apart of. So people are liking this figure for what it is. Which is good to see.
I walked into Toys R Us today and the guy was putting them on the shelves. They had about 10 Armada versions on the shelf and the employee had the one regular Megatron in his hands putting it out, which I took as soon as it hit the shelf. He told me that's what is happening, everyone is grabbing this one and not giving a damn about the Armada version. Can't blame people, though. THIS is the iconic look for Megatron (for the most part) whereas Armada was on TV for one or two seasons and then forgotten. Not sure why Hasbro is making the cases Armada heavy when they had to have known this is the version most people would want. Maybe the online toy stores beg them to do it so they can sell more of them (That was a joke but it's kind of weird that even BBTS has the Armada version for the same price as Walmart but this version for $80).
I agree, he looks great next to MP-10. :-) Also, the tank treads folded behind his back is also a design feature from the IDW comics--his pre-Earth look, I think. Thank you for the review. :-)
great review. I'm glad that I have this figure. I think the detail on it is very nice, and the head sculpt is spot on. Overall I'm impressed with this figure and this current line. Let's keep the classics going.
This figure is truly outstanding in terms of representation. Almost had me fooled of it being a MP figure. This and Apollyon are both I wouldn't mind picking up. Nice review Optibotimus.
I'm impressed at the sheer amount of paint on this guy from Hasbro. I've come to expect gray plastic whenever something should be silver. It's actually kinda awesome.
Just a Lil helpful info for anyone concerned about Megatron rubber tracks, go to an auto parts store and get some belt dressing and apply it to his tracks. This will preserve his rubber treads.

I agree that the ratchet joints are a letdown, but that's about it for me. I've been waiting a LONG time for a Megatron figure that truly captures his G1 look, so I'm really happy with this guy.

Deluxe Galvatron update. Were you sent X-Transbots Apollyon last Monday? They said they send out the testversions to reviewers. Can't wait for the review!
Thanks for all your reviews. Probably my favorite channel for reviews now. I'm getting back to being heavy into Transformers since they're heading back to more G1ish with the CW etc. now and the quality KO Masterpieces making it more affordable/doable to to get them (oh, no bashing please-brought myself to do it). Hey Optibotimus...you going to Botcon? I'm excited that its in the midwest this year again. It's been like 6 years since I went to one. Curious about the "news" that will be given this year.
I had this in my hand last week I found one left on the shelf at target, I put it back because I wasnt sure if he was worth buying. I went back today he was gone, but I am not as pissed off now after watching this, I still like him, but I really like posing them and this looks limited. Still cool looking. Nice review as always much appreciated. I finally caved in for the Mp 05. Just for the appreciation of the crazy configuration of him.
I'm with you on having him in with my MP's. Great scale for the seekers and Prime and Soundwave. Agreed, tank mode is impeccable, robot mode I'm just meh! You didn't say but what really sold me on this figure is the head sculpt. It is hands down, the best facial likeness of Megatron to this day (including Masterpiece Megatron which I finally kicked out of the house). He'll soon be replaced with Apollyon. Touching on the Armada version. I like it but, I would have appreciated a slightly 'tweaked' version of this in G2 colors. Great review man!
I feel a bit mixed about the "War against Backpack." Like with Transformers Prime Megatron. (His shoulder wings.) Backpack can add mass, formidable attitude, and other desirable features.
I don't really care for Armada, but I must say I like that green tank a lot more than a silver one. I actually picked up both of them. The armada, only one on shelf and I figured I'll kick myself if I miss out. To my surprise, Friday, I found the G1 and now I'm debating on returning armada megs. They both look great though, and I'll probably keep them both. I'm a TF holic.... XD
Considering I grew up with Armada, I'm gonna get that version of Megatron. Since he WAS a tank in the show. Also, he'll look rather nice next to Starscream and the Mini-Cons. Just seems to make more sense to me. :)
joltster109 The toys were sold as "mini-cons" but they're technically amonites. A race of tiny robots that can combine with any other members of their race. Shockwave uses an army of them in Dark Cybertron to try and destroy Metroplex.
Senator Shockwave Ahhh... That makes sense. Didn't know that. I guess that also explains why the set could combine with one another to form Centuritron.
joltster109 Yeah, i thought they were Minicons till i read the comics. I guess it just made more sense to market the toy as a minicon since outside of the IDW comics, the amonites don't exist. The entire last wave or so of Generations deluxes were made pretty much entirely of character in the Dark Cybertron comic. Which is why they included issues of that comic.
i personally prefer his reviews because of the easier way to transform the figures since i am too lazy to follow instructions manual. hahaha keep it up ***** thumbs up!
Great Review as always Mr. ***** . ICYMI Hasbro is releasing their own variant of Combiner Wars Slingshot and Wildrider. Apparently , they will be renamed to Quickslinger and Brake-neck .
The bias that you are referring to is due to the fact that in the last 10+ years no matter the media, we always seem to get sub par Megatron toys, even when the character its based from is a good idea(DOTM Megatron comes to mind)they finally nail a good movie version of him, and its the only one they didn't do a nice leader version of. Based on past experience this figure IS worth all the praise.
I've always thought if they ever even tried to make a faithful adaptation of transformers movie, this is the megatron they would use. A tank fits right in with his persona and is more practical than a gun that shrinks or is immobile. Alternatively, because megatron still retains much of his G1 characteristics, they could have the gun as a third mode, which would be fucking awesome. Anyways, I'm just dreaming at this point.
yeah i love this figure too-- maybe im weird, but i never liked megatron as a handgun, because as a handgun, he couuld not be independent functioning as his alt mode....now galvatron as a stand alone rocket cannon, yes because he could transform, and be free standing and fire on his own, but the hand gun thing always got me because as a hand gun, he could not fight and function without another decepticon to hold him and fire him..so YES loooove the tank megatrons it makes more sense and it is fitting
I know which version of megatron I'm gonna choose and it's this one,but it doesn't turn into a gun because it's very hard to buy megatron as a toy gun nowadays, but I can still do a g1 gun mode out of him
I personally find the mold more fitting for Armada Megatron, but at least they were nice enough to create a mold that could suit either character well enough.I'm also curious about how well this guy scales with Toyworld's Orion. Anyone remember that?
My biggest gripe about this one is that I really wish his fusion cannon was bigger. Ah well....maybe we can expect a 3rd party attachment or something later on.
maybe I missed it...what are those tabs/nobs on top of the tank fenders (?) in the front corners?. I saw it explained somewhere I think but don't recall
The problem is, i want one that is like....BRAND NEW. When it comes to my vintage figures, i like them untouched really by anyone else. Megatron can get expensive in that sort of condition. They're reissued him, but i always missed out
Even though some of the stats didn't suit some of the characters? Don't get me wrong. I miss seeing tech specs and comparing characters with one another based on a rating system that was never brought up in any of the shows.
I made some pretty decent money (for a nine year old in 1985 lol) by making 3rd Party (LOL) Tech Spec Decoders by having my Mom buy me a few sheets of red transluscent plastic, cutting them to size and selling them to other kids at school. People could never keep them so I wasn't ripping them off, I was just providing a product to enhance the enjoyment of their fine Hasbro products.
Will you do a review of the DX-9 upgrade for this guy when it comes out? Also, what are the pegs on the front and one on right side of turret? Maybe he'll combine with something after all...
About time that you reviewed Megatron again, Paul Denton-botimus. Now you just need a beard, some augmentations, and a trenchcoat. Anyway, this Megatron does a good job of "combining" new and old-pardon the joke. His robot mode's design has "G1" written all over him and he easily transforms into a good-looking tank. I'll take that combo over any combo given by restaurants in my area. Yes, I agree that he has problems. First, he's still smaller than Leader Class figures from the past. Second, I worry about breaking his shoulder joints even though I have the upper body strength of a newborn baby. Third, his robot mode looks thin and lanky because of his legs. I'll still consider buying him, though. My fingers are crossed. Until then, your vision is augmented, Paul. I'll keep irritating every toy collector with that line from "Deus Ex."
Don't think we'll see Megatron turn into a gun , just for purposes of not having kids getting taken out by police for running around with a transformer in their hands. Tank is fine. Nice Figg
On the backpack part does it look like it would be easy to knock out the pins so he's back would look more balanced? I don't much for the tank transformation anyways and I was thinking on getting the upgrade kit to
Its mainly for the armada version of megatron, cause in armada the gimmick was that you put the minicons on to the robot,so they made working minicon ports for this.(basicly the light grey pegs are minicons ports for the armada megatron)
I'll probably grab him as a masterpiece place holder until Apollyon comes out. He's a nice looking figure, but without a Prime at the same scale in the CW line I just don't know what to do with him.
I know that this may sound crazy but he is almost too silver. I'm trying to decide if I want to weather him a bit. He looks like they weathered him on the back of the box. I was thinking that this would give him a more "Been in a lot of battles" look. I grew up with G1 Megs as a gun and I always thought that as bad as he is he needed another Decepticon to use him in his Alt mode. Kinda wimpy in that reguard. Actually he should have been a triple changer like Blitzwing robot, tank and warrior. Megatron should represent everything about war and destruction.
I'm not sure whether to pick up this one or the Takara version (LG13). I kinda like the paint job on the Takara version better. Plus from the videos I've seen it seems like the Takara version doesn't have the problem with the joints in his legs where it's either too close or too spread out, but I'm not sure because no one has done a comparison video. What would you guys say?
The very first thing I did when I got megs is put him in the gun mode I don't understand why no reviewer will touch base on this at all kind of like beast hunters megs I just loved giving him a pirate hat (never really liked the sharkticon mode). It's like every single review is a carbon copy of another with a few exceptions of emgo/skullface with skits botimus/baltmatrix/tj omega still take the top spot of my favorite complainers you know if the toy happens to be a mp rodimus or kronos.
Excuse me. Is this version of G1 Megatron the same one seen in TF: Devastation video game? in that game. Megatron is a silver tank and he looks like this one.
I always thought Megatron was supposed to be bigger than Optimus, I think he scales with the Universe/classics voyager Prime fine, Optimus may be smaller than Megs, but he packs a punch!!
Andrew Lewis In the original cartoon? Naw man, Megatron and Prime were the exact same height to show they were evenly matched. You can google the original character model size chart.
Honestly, though this looks ok, i'd rather wait til Ultra Magnus comes out in June, which i can't wait to get. Looks cool too, better, cheaper than MP or 3P fig
Juztin Nope, they are making it, because 1) store listings for Voyager Scattershot and Onslaught have been leaked, 2) Hot Spot is clearly designed so he can also be redecoed/retooled as Onslaught in the future, and 3) because I'm pretty sure Hasbro knows FOC Bruticus sucked and wants to give us something better.
It's interesting how I watch your reviews before I purchase a fig. I'm thinking of buying this Megs masterpiece for fifty bucks at Walmart. Does anyone think this is a good deal?

RowdyRodimus A shame that I didn't think of that back in the day.
I think this guy was made to go with Ultra Prime witch would make sense since Megs didn't get a combiner voyager class.
Don't think we'll see Megatron turn into a gun , just for purposes of not having kids getting taken out by police for running around with a transformer in their hands. Tank is fine. Nice Figg
megatron being a tank is better
True, G1 (Cartoon) megatron was just a pussy most of the time.
I saw the Takara Tomy version of this on eBay..
Is there any paint app difference and which one you personally think is better?
Yeah, Optibotimus is right. Those joints are... unsightly.
This tank is beastly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On the backpack part does it look like it would be easy to knock out the pins so he's back would look more balanced? I don't much for the tank transformation anyways and I was thinking on getting the upgrade kit to
Finally a G1 Megatron re-release, sadly I wish it turned into a gun
hey Optibotimus. is it just me, or is Megatron's missile a red repaint of human alliance Bumblebee's missile?
I gotta hand it to Hasbro, this is a really fun toy. I'm really digging this.
Do you know what those light-grey pegs are for? There are two at the front if he's in his tank mode. No idea what they're for
Its mainly for the armada version of megatron, cause in armada the gimmick was that you put the minicons on to the robot,so they made working minicon ports for this.(basicly the light grey pegs are minicons ports for the armada megatron)
I'll probably grab him as a masterpiece place holder until Apollyon comes out. He's a nice looking figure, but without a Prime at the same scale in the CW line I just don't know what to do with him.
i am happy about the g1 i bought.
I like the "weathered" idea.
hey ***** i hope you do video review comparison with the takara version soon!
What would you guys say?
get the takara
The very first thing I did when I got megs is put him in the gun mode I don't understand why no reviewer will touch base on this at all kind of like beast hunters megs I just loved giving him a pirate hat (never really liked the sharkticon mode). It's like every single review is a carbon copy of another with a few exceptions of emgo/skullface with skits botimus/baltmatrix/tj omega still take the top spot of my favorite complainers you know if the toy happens to be a mp rodimus or kronos.
John Darkling Nothing you say makes much sense LOL He doesn't have a gun mode
***** www.tfw2005.com/boards/transformers-feedback/1033610-combiner-wars-megatron-leader-55.html Rememember toys are supposed to be fun,
Hey I am Ralph I like your reviews and stuff
Hey optibotimus you're reviews
Are great I mean you even have optimus the combiner wars I have one as well and you are way better than grim
Hey um optibotimus I uh like your reviews and your the best reviewer than grim so any reply or something to know
Now that we have a POTP Leader Prime, I've looked back at this Megatron and thought that they'd both look great. PM Prime will stay with Overlord.
Excuse me. Is this version of G1 Megatron the same one seen in TF: Devastation video game? in that game. Megatron is a silver tank and he looks like this one.
Tf devastation is based on the idw designs, so the answer is yes
I always thought Megatron was supposed to be bigger than Optimus, I think he scales with the Universe/classics voyager Prime fine, Optimus may be smaller than Megs, but he packs a punch!!
Megs is about a head or so taller than Prime
Andrew Lewis In the original cartoon? Naw man, Megatron and Prime were the exact same height to show they were evenly matched. You can google the original character model size chart.
question who will win fall of cybertron grimlock vs leader class grimlock
this megatron transforms into a tank is because that the armada version of megatron is a tank and the armada one uses this mold
Honestly, though this looks ok, i'd rather wait til Ultra Magnus comes out in June, which i can't wait to get. Looks cool too, better, cheaper than MP or 3P fig
We need a brand new gun megatron, one that turns into a laser gun like shockwave
why couldn't they position the shoulder joint a little higher?
Hey Optibotimus, do you know if they will make a combiner wars Bruticus??? Thanks!
I don't think so as Bruticus was already released in the Fall of / War for Cybertron line
Juztin Nope, they are making it, because 1) store listings for Voyager Scattershot and Onslaught have been leaked, 2) Hot Spot is clearly designed so he can also be redecoed/retooled as Onslaught in the future, and 3) because I'm pretty sure Hasbro knows FOC Bruticus sucked and wants to give us something better.
very cool
how does he look with the generations devastator?
It's interesting how I watch your reviews before I purchase a fig.
I'm thinking of buying this Megs masterpiece for fifty bucks at Walmart.
Does anyone think this is a good deal?
We're I live it's only 20 at Walmart
His transformation sequence is like Warpath's.
BIG MEGATRON!
