yep, and there are auto-choke designs, it should not be hard to make the choke normally on and then the engine running releases it to the off or open position. All just mechanically...
Good to note:. Noticed he put in a delay on timer when power is lost. This is important so if power flicker on and off the gen doesn't try to start. Also good to set up an off delay timer for the reverse of this to ensure the power has actually returned. Just be sure you don't back feed power 😝
I absolutely love it! I have the exact same generator. I am looking forward to purchase this remote starter from you! Keep up the good work! Following you from 🇨🇦!
Great video and thank you for sharing. You will be a wealthy man if you can convert your setup in to an all in one automatic transfer switch like they have for the standby people. I feel they left us portable people out of the loop with the auto transfer switches. They are charging massive amounts of money for the auto switches plus for the same concept you just did in this video.
Hi Jon! Can you show the model and number of the auto gen-start module and all the wire connection to? In my case, i have a brand new westinghouse generator but the StSwitch made by them is not working with my year production.
Just a little update, I have to implement a choke bypass for the times a choke isn't required after the first crank such as in cold weather conditions.
okay this isnt ready for sharing, youre designing and chatting about your whole life history and great to see this but share when its put together, willya! This is development work. Not presentation quality. Thanks again. We need this. Looking forward. Actually there should be a choke setup possible where the running lets the choke off and no control is needed for the choke. Something centrifugal or exhaust powered..Then we just need a remote close the circuit control.
I have the same generator with a Honeywell auto transfer switch, SR2B121BD SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC controller and the same door lock actuator. Do you use reverse power output to the actuator to make it dual acting ? My actuators don't spring return..
Great work. Please consider for hybrid system for next project with battery, inverter, and charger. so the generator run at its peak efficiency to charge the battery and cycling on and off between battery charge level.
Can I get a parts list for this? As in controller module, arduino module etc? Also I’d like to add a temperature control function as in freezer temp for auto start. I know OF arduino but not HOW to arduino. Any resource would be appreciated . Thanks
I also have a T07571, but mine is hooked to Natural Gas. I have found that mine is a bit tricky to get going, with either gasoline, propane or Natural Gas. I have to "play" with the choke and it takes a few attempts to make it happen. Can you suggest a solution?
thought I was the only one geeking out lol. I have the HGN4020N panel, likely the same unit as yours. Controlling a WEN 8750 inverter generator out in a shed. Mounted the panel in a hobby box. Did have to install a timer relay to shut choke off at first but I dont need it anymore. Originally I was using aux 1 output (pin 7) set as fuel pump to energize the choke relay but deleted it an now running the choke off the crank terminal. But did have to install toggle switch to turn off the choke for hot starts. Are you using any other sensors on the air cooled motor? Cylinder head temp? Tachometer pickup? and CT's to take advantage of the current read out on the display? I thought I'd go one step further and installing a reed style fuel level sensor to tell me fuel level in the house . I am impressed with the smartgen panel. i'ts pretty powerful.
Hi Jon I have a firman T08071 and I have installed the smart Gen controller just as you did on yours. I also installed a choke actuator. Do you have your choke connected to the smart Gen controller? If so where did you connect it to? What function are you using in the smart Gen controller? Other then that mine starts and stops with no issues. I just can’t figure out how you got the choke to come on
Hi! Thanks for your interest and I'm glad to hear that you guys are starting a project of your own! The actuator has to be controlled by a set of relays that invert the voltage for the choke-on and choke-off action, the relay setup also has to cut the power to the actuator when it isn't in use or the actuator will quickly fail if it doesn't have built-in limit switches to turn it's motor off when it reaches it's limit. I don't have my wiring schematics with me at the moment as I'm at work, but you can reachout to me at jonsgarage69@gmail.com for more info!
I'm just doing a simple remote start/kill/choke on mine with a cheap wireless relay board. The car door lock actuator everyone is using doesn't have enough throw and I didn't think it was possible to use on my Champion 9375 watt that uses the same choke lever as yours. Your engine and linkage look just like my Champion and I'm wondering how you mounted that actuator like that. Did you use the bracket that came with the actuator? Looks like you just mounted the bracket using the one bolt on the motor. After I saw your vid I was trying to figure out where to mount it on mine but there's only that one bolt and linkage in the way. What did you attach the bracket to?
I used the included bracket which I bent into an L shaped to reach that engine bolt, I did have a few brackets laying arround so I was able to play with this. Remember when using these actuators that you cannot maintain power to them for more than a few seconds at a time before they actually fail from overheating.
@@jonsgarage3859 Thanks bud. I set mine up just like you had it from what I could see. Unfortunately this actuator I bought off Amazon only moves the choke about 1/3 of the way. The way you set it up gives it enough throw but just doesn't have enough power on mine. I need something better I guess. Mine is a momentary relay so no worries about burning it up.
Congratulations, excellent work. Where can you get the controller module? I am interested in making my black max generator with an automatic honda engine. I am interested in the model of the controller please. I want to do something similar.
Hi Jon, I’ve been following your videos on the generator controller. You are very knowledgeable in this regard. I have a new unboxed Firman 10KW generator T08071 which I would like to add this remote feature. Your videos shows that it can be done, however it does not give me all the information I need to complete the project. It would be nice if you can provide your viewers with a circuit diagram of the setup and a link where these items can be obtained. It appears like some folks are waiting for you to make a “finished product” for sale, that’s okay, but for me I would prefer to assemble the components myself. Also, do you have a schematic of the generator circuitry? Thanks.
If I was you I make in a box with magnets that cling to the frame. And make female click connect on the box male that attaches to generator battery. Did you connected to a trip switch on the side can’t tell I’m a Electrician 2 let me know if you selling a kit. I used a contractor monitor though a k contractor . Or maybe a Napco relay board. You can control up to 9 relays at once. Great video. The internet sell Napco relay boards way to much buy at your local alarm supply way cheaper.

What if the power comes back on?
It auto shut's off. I couldn't demonstrate this because I hadn't completed the shutdown feature yet. I will be making a new video soon enough.
Take a look at the description for a full list of features.
