Jody is an independent artist who owns her music; she is ahead of the curve with the business side of things as well as artistically because she can grow her own brand. She doesn't have the pressure of a label executive trying to pull her strings and she doesn't have to go multi-platinum as a label owner...she can sell in the 100K range and make more money than an artist on a major label selling 1 million. Who is going to pay you better than you pay yourself?
Watley continues to be the ultimate artist here....she combines a soulful delivery with a strong stage prescence and and a beautiful set design. Truly underrated throughout the 90s.
... I want to go back in time. Jody's song makes me so sentimental. Therefore I will always keep a place in my heart for Jody and her song. 💖🌹Thomas from Germany
Listen young one! what your viewing is raw talent at it's finest! A moment in time of musical trend that started to change and mix the original song was new and completely unexpected! Jody look was just not a woman in a red suit, that we all see today but a black woman gender-bending theme that many other female artists took and never gave credit to its predecessor! The creative theme was very daring and shocking crew hair cut ! Jody's look was based on high fashion London European and street fashion that was also in its infancy and later became streetwear!
Lets talk! The choreography and set of the entrance was very Madonna Express Yourself at MTV live from a year ago. But Madonna took the entire women in suits idea plus high pony tail of her dancers from her and elevated it to the next level for Blond Ambition! BUT Jody was the first to vogue and wear high fashion in mainstream TV. She is the beginning of many things that new female black entertainers do plus she was a natural! A true blueprint. It is a mystery to me why black people never appreciate their true innovators...
So true. When they are so Innovative they become Universal and cross all racial barriers, They are considered a sellout and they are not appreciated. Even Whitney was criticized because she dominated pop music for all Races. It's a very sad and backwards mentality. 😔
According to Wikipedia: The 1990 Soul Train Music Awards aired live in select cities on March 14, 1990 (and was later syndicated in other areas), honoring the best in R&B, soul, rap, jazz, and gospel music from the previous year. The show was co-hosted by Patti LaBelle, Luther Vandross, and Dionne Warrick. Google "1990 Soul Train Music Awards" for direct link.
she is so underated, I have a special place for people like her because this song and era brings back wonderful memories , wish that I could go back in time if only for one night.
@riddim3456 Like I said before this was the only segment I transferred digitally. Unfortunately, I no longer have access to equipment that will transfer the VHS video to DVD. But if and when I do I'll definitely share this with you.
@riddim3456 By "whole tape" do you mean the entire Award show program? If that's the case I do have it but this was the only segment that I converted to a digital file.
She is so striking ....paired way down w/o the pretense of hair/ass/and nudity!!!I miss JOdy and all the other real woman talents of the last music decade.
Why do singers have to improvise so much when singing their own songs? The verses have such a beautiful melody that go along perfectly with the lyrics. I really didn't like the way she sang the second verse here.
A couple of reasons. One, to show that they have chops. Two, so that the listening audience know they are singing live and finally because it gets tiring singing the same song the same way every time. A lot of her critics said she wasn't a good singer or said her voice was thin. I think she silenced them all with this performance!
Jody proved that she could sing live at the 1988 VMA’s, but this performance of Everything was a really stunning job. She killed it and everyone in the audience knew too. She was underrated and deserved to survive in the 90s along with janet & madonna, because at one point she was right behind them in the pop scene.
I think her voice cracked in some parts, but other than that i thought she sounded good and was not offkey. Jody was never a powerhouse and always had a soft tone, but she could sing. If you ask me, she proved to the critics that she could sing and wasn't no Paula Abdul or Madonna
Better natural dancer than janet. Better singer than Janet. Better stylistt than janet. Janet had better name and connections and machine behind her Being a mom and wife ended jodys career. Much respect
Jody entered the music business before Janet, but Janet entered Show business before Jody… Janet hits notes Jody hasn’t hit at all like an F5 in the song “He Doesn’t Know I’m Alive”… a Better singer Jody is?, I don’t know… Janet is an incredible dancer who can possibly can pickup any choreography, but Jody is an incredible freestyle dancer… they are equally yolked… Jody brought high European Fashion sense to her image… Janet gave us many iconic, yet poignant fashion moments… I don’t think Jody is better than Janet nor Janet is better than Jody as an artist… They are both equally comparable

I fell in love with this song as an early teen in 1989. Music was ACTUALLY music!
Still A Iconic Performance To This Day!!!!!!
Watley continues to be the ultimate artist here....she combines a soulful delivery with a strong stage prescence and and a beautiful set design. Truly underrated throughout the 90s.
Never saw this....had the song on my mind, did a search and found this. MADE MY DAY!!! She looks incredible. She does not get the props she deserves.
Simply beautiful. I’m still in love with Miss Watley.
Jody is so🔥HOT!🔥 She’s absolutely glamourous!♥️ Pure talent!🎶

@NegroEgo Thank you, keep in touch.
do you have the whole tape? if u do, just send me a torrent. holla
Great song and melody, but she should have played it a lil safe with the improvisations.
Anyone know where she was performing in this video?
Soul Train Awards 90!

I say sing it the way it should be sung. Simple
+Helen Grigsby I disagree, that’s very karaoke-ish. It wasn’t even a huge change, she just added more runs and belts.
It’s funny how she took a dig at Whitney Houstons style of singing in an interview, yet, tried to come out singing and couldn’t hit a real note.
I think her Label made her cut her hair for the new deal
which ended up killing her career not long after
Im a true Jody Watley fan. However, I think the vocals sucked here. Excellent styling/art direction but the voice was struggling.

The original song is not like that.
this was 2 minutes too long
one classy and pretty lady... clear to see madonna copied her style which is okay 'cept madonna became sleazy as heck Peace
The vocals were not the best here. She is not suited to be a live singer.
An overated artist. Plenty of better singers about.
