The stock filter for the cv carb is a very good one and shrouded for a reason. Any side winds will upset a carb with the K&N little filter on. You can clean the stock one by pulling the black cross and foam out with needle nose pliers. Clean and refit. Then you can add a little aircleaner foam on top for easier cleaning.
The grease looked good on your filter. I been doing that on my bikes way back in the 70s. Yea im old! I have a DR 650 and it is hard to explain to someone just how good it is even though it doesnt excel at anything. I know someone who has a new Harley. It has been back to the shop 6 times in less than a year for issues and check engine lights. I told him buy a DR and you will never see a check engine light! Haha. Simple is good for me!

I got my factory style plug from Pro Cycle. I wired my GPS to the other key on/off plug that is in the wire harness under the headlight cover. The plug from Pro Cycle has wires coming out of it, so all you have to do is connect the wires to your device wires. Pro Cycle lists it as Auxiliary Power Plug and it has a built in fuse.
I've seen that!!! I was actually going to pick one up, but decided to split my fusing out since the GPS already had one inline and my seat heater will need another. Looks like a pretty slick design though!
I am enjoying the further updates on the carpuride. I was going to ask you to give us more updates on that system as you ride the bike and get used to it, but you gave us an update. The throttle cables open and close a butterfly valve in the Venturi and the internal carburetor vacuum system operates the slide. It definitely helps to drill the secondary hole in the slide. Throttle response is much better. When you get to the performance parts, try to get a Dyno jet kit. I put Dyno Jets in my KLX's KLRs and XRLs. When I went to buy the carburetor kit for the DR, I couldn't find a Dyno jet kit and had to get a different brand. That brand didn't come with a new jet needle, which it needs for better low and mid-range. The kit I bought came with shims for the top of the stock jet needle where it goes through the slide. It's crisp, but it's no XRL. And by all means keep up with that little bitty o ring that goes between the CV plastic cap and the carburetor body. Your choke assembly will be none functional if you lose the o-ring. I have done that a few times by mistake. I am sure you are getting all kinds of advice... Poor Ben. I can't wait to see what you come up with. I am assuming your weather is about to turn cold and all of us followers in the south will not get to see you do the power up mods until spring...rats! I am super curious about the carpuride. I have a Garmin Montana which is nifty, but the screen is so small. Those solder/heat shrink connectors are known as environmental splices, meaning they are used to keep the environment out of your connection, preventing corrosion and deterioration (we used them on the A7 and A6 aircraft I worked on in the Navy years ago). Nice job on tracking down and fixing the problem. I have had the DR for a year, and I love it, but I think I am going to sell it and get a V-Strom 800DE. I think I can still do a BDR on the V-Strom, but also have a better road experience. Enjoyed the video.
That's a good name! Should be easy to remember too! Yeah, the DR is an awesome ride, but I'll bet the DE would be great for BDRs and longer, higher speed rides on the road. I'm glad to hear that, thank you!!!
My Dr 650's crank case cracked @ 42k miles. I was at a dealer yrs later and noticed Suzuki reinforced the case [near alternator cover] where mine had cracked. I had jet kit, large fuel tank ,airbox modes, slip on silencer, and suspension mods. I really liked the DR. Tried for months to find used engine. No Luck. sold for $200.
You say you’re not a mechanic but you’re a lot more clever than me when it comes to wiring and stuff like that. For some reason I’m not able to grasp electrical at all. I’m a little better with the mechanical end of things. Nice job fixing it.
Thanks!!! There's always a fair amount of wiring going on in my head before and in-between filming. So it just looks easy in the videos 😆. I also did a bit of wiring and wire diagram drawing, back when I was an Engineering Specialist in my old life. So I learned a substantial amount from that and just apply it to the bikes now. Kinda funny how it all worked out, must have been the plan all along I suppose! 🙏
FYI - the carburetor vacuum filter can be cleaned as well, there are videos on You-Tube. Just use a set of needle nose pliers to pull out the retainer holding the foam. Be careful though, that plastic retainer has been known to break.
Just looking at some of the mods you have done to the DR. Dude....... You need to uncork that bike. Air box, re jet, full FMF with power Bomb and you will be pleased with the results. You will be able to go back to stock gearing and get some highway chops back.
Wow you sprayed a lot of oil on that foam filter!!! I would lightly spray and squeeze it to make sure it gets all over. If you feel loss of power or choking, clean air filter again and this time spray lightly. That goes same with KN air filter too.
Nice work! That airbox and air filter setup seems like the antithesis of performance and all the way towards minimalist. Makes me appreciate the size, design and retainer mechanism of the DRZ400.
J.I.S. screwdriver link is out of stock. They are built not to slip and torque to your liking, as opposed to the normal that slide out when tight enough.
Ahhh! That makes a lot of sense and was exactly what I've been feeling! I forget that Philips are literally designed to slip at a certain point. I like J.I.S. much better!
The DR had a problem, but you keep talking about the XR so this is confusing in the beginning of the video. The first thing I would have done was jump box. Lithium batteries die hard when they die. If you let the voltage get too low the battery dies and won’t really charge up like a regular lead acid battery. Have you heard of the “add a fuse” pig tails? You find a switched fuse and pull it. Plug in the “add a fuse” to that circuit and your fuse for the additional circuit and it’s done. Been using them for years. I figured everyone knew about these. Yeah and never let a lithium battery go dead.
Swanky..I also run a li-ion battery in my DR650..I noticed the starter loves this..plus a big up high weight savings..for all bikes dust will clog an air cleaner up fast..keep-em clean..a stock stator has limited accessories use..might wanna check it..those lights are a huge draw..pro cycle has some good info on this also sells a high output stator..good on ya swank..enjoy your vids..keep the shiney side up :0)
They're all pretty low amp draws, carplay unit is less than 1 amp and the lights mixed with the LED headlight bulb actually cancel each other out since the stock halogen bulb draws so much.
I think it was on my first KLR that I discovered the drain hole/plug. That bike had a long hose running down from it with a plug on the end, which would have been great for holding water, had it not been melted by the exhaust... haha. Thanks!!!
I had original lead acid battery in my dr. bike wouldnt idle and stall when i got on the brakes. I replaced battery with anti gravity li ion and fixed all problems. old battery had enough power to start bike just fine.
Awesoke you pointed out the jis screwdriver thats the main reason ppl stripe the float bowl bolts when messing with jetting. When I bought new bolts and some washers for my peg mounts to make them solid I used jis 10.3 which is basically grade 8. Also if you do not have a jis use a impact with a fresh #2 push hard and straight the tap brakes it loose quick
My never has a dr 650 and my son has a Suzuki 400 sm but I like my xr 650 better, just replaced my chain and inspected the front splines. I’ve had a frizko wide front sprocket since 900 miles and have 10,000 miles now, but took some advice from one of your followers and greased it.Splines looked good, also I like how easy it is to clean the filter on the xr.I bought a anti gravity battery but wasn’t sure if it was safe to put on the xr charging system so I put it in my gasgas 700 sm and took that battery and put in my xr
Yeah, I know what you mean. The DR is really a great bike, but the XR is just so firm and snappy. It's like nothing I've ever owned! I go back and forth, but for most rides, I think I like enjoy it better than my 701. Hmm... I've got a Tusk battery for the XR that I need to put in yet, Rocky Mountain says it should work... I suppose I'll find out! Haha.
@ so on my anti-gravity battery it says it may not be compatible with some pre 90,s bikes. Even thou my bike is a 2009 , they haven’t changed much since it came out. Maybe if I buy a cheap lithium battery like firepower I may try it on the xr
I love my DR, but the air filter system I hate. I have a very hard time putting back together after I get the filter lube. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get things lined up and back in place and bolted up, give me a shout. The secondary air filter must be kept clean or you will get poor performance. A suggestion with it is get some foam for a lawn mower, that is thick, cut it to size and put it in the plastic housing. This gives more filtration and help keep dirt out of the carb.
That's a good idea for that second filter! I'd like to help with the main one, but I tried several different things and was never confident that I had it right 🤣.
Looks like you got the DR sorted! It seems like you're investing a lot of cash into the DR platform to make it comparable with the XR? The DR was the bike I had settled on until I stumbled onto an ad for a like-new 2021 XR650L (which I'd never considered - I wanted a KLR first then migrated to the DR and sorta settled there). After seeing the ad for the XR it was all over for me! Between the initial owner (a life-long MX racer) and myself the bike has had about every mod except a different carb or the 2nd and 5th gear swap-out and it absolutely rocks for my use. Thanks for the great content!
Thanks!!! I'm glad to hear that! If we do get some snow, I'll definitely be out on Freeride 800 a bit! But I'll keep riding the bikes, just need to put on the heated gear and grip studs!
Ben...the factory style link is the same as the breather filter.....can you send the link to the plugs....need to set up my rally tower to a relay to shut down with the key. Great trouble shooting....if you have any more bikes, you would need a full time service guy just for preventive maintenance....😁😁 Garth
Hello! Cool glass! I also have DR, I’m thinking about getting one for myself. It looks quite tall. What is your height? Doesn't it bother you to watch it while driving while sitting?
Thank you! I'm 5'10" or 177.8cm tall. It's not in my way unless I'm sitting down off road on really technical trails. On the road I can see over it, the camera is below my chin so it looks like it's more in the way than it actually is. When I stand up off road, it's completely out of my way and more or less disappears behind the chin bar on my helmet. Once in a while when I need to look directly down in front of my tire, it can get in the way, but it's a small sacrifice for the wind protection and place to mount a GPS.
When ya get that bike finished out and adv ready you should ride it up here. We got wild horses, beartooth pass and ghost towns and stuff a guy could go see
I bet none of them fixed it. It was probably your kickstand switch, and the problem will come back. Or your exhaust valve sensor is malfunctioning. I know, you only did three things to it. Plus put it inside. And probably cleaned it up a bit.
@@SwankyCatProductions, Look at your new pigtail splice by the battery. It looks like you have a red wire chilling out in the open for your next accessory. 26:24-44-ish
Man I kinda miss my first gen DR650, Ive got 2 enduros 08 XT250 and a 2021 CRF300L Not happy with the stock gearing on the 300. definitely wasnt happy with the XT carb/exhaust so its totally modified now. Got a link to the "swanky" eye pro?
I need to get a test ride on a 300! I will say that I like the big bores much better on the road than any 250 I've ridden, but there's no contest off road. Lighter is always better there! Glad to hear you got the XT set up well, I should try that with my Dad's Sherpa 250. It supposedly makes 30ish HP, but revs way to slow. Link to the swanky what?
Man, I really love the DR, but I HATE the air filter set up. Trying to hold that little retainer on a twin air with one hand while putting the screw in with the other illicits foul language every time.
Soooo… you lured me in with XR650l content. Got me all excited by talking about and building it for just what I want to do with mine. Then you yanked the rug out from underneath me and are forcing me to watch a bunch of content about the other bike that was on my list when I purchased the XRl. For shame Swanky, for shame.
Hey keepswinning - not wanting an argument - am sincerely curious - what are the reasons to choose the DR over XR? Is it the cush drive? Honestly, am very curious - thank you
@garyhoward2490 Are you deliberately being ignorant? Suzuki has a long history of racing with championships too... sooo are you just willfully ignorant or prefer alt facts over actual facts?
@@fm4695 I know you didn't ask me but when I was researching which bike to get there were a few good reasons I chose the DR over the XR. Biggest issues from memory: cush drive wears out the front spline shaft much quicker which requires an engine tear down to fix it. Heating issues, the XR is known to run much hotter than the DR as the DR has higher oil capacity and an oil cooler. Heat is the biggest killer of oil and bearings in air/oil cooled engines. So just these two things alone are huge. But there's also the fact that there are just more aftermarket options for the DR to build it to suit my style. ADV one day with hundreds of miles on the road for over the course of a week. Or slow single track in 100+ degree heat (where the XR would suffer more) the next. Also the seat height matters when you're off-road and need to get a foot or two down on rocks, logs, or slippery terrain or lift the bike in those same conditions. The DR is at least 2" lower and can be lowered even more via factory settings. Look up which bikes have ridden around the globe or taken long multi month trips more in harsh terrain. It's pretty much never the XR for a reason. The XR is better off-road as it has better suspension and ground clearance. That's about it...
@@intrigue175175 Thank you! Those are all items I was aware of (and fully remedied on my bike), but I'm not an expert and wondered if there was something I missed. The DR is crazy popular for a very good reason! However, I've lowered my XR650L, added an oil-cooler, and a larger/wider front sprocket. Additionally, I have wider foot pegs, brush guards, a center-stand, and steel brake lines. I believe all the typical XR650L shortfalls are attended to (aside from splitting the cases for the 2nd and 5tgh gear upgrade).
Wow, hope you can get that overbuilt DR on the highway. Crazy my 08' has gone all over Utah,Nevada and Cali...without corporate sponsorship. Your shit is weak bro.
Blatent lies, nobody kills the mighty DR so quickly! Dead lithium battery so soon after riding? Check your electrical system, that battery should be charged!
There are over a dozen gen 3 KLRs around me that have been for sale all year but haven't moved. The bike is 100lbs heavier than a DR. People who want a bike that heavy get the Tenere 700.

Yeah? I guess I figure if there is too much it'll squish out when I'm squeezing it tightly. How do you ensure total coverage otherwise?
Some people upgrade the stator to power extra lights and accessories.
A ricky stator high output rewind may be in your future.
DR650 stators are usually under powered. The regulator may need upgrade as well, stock tends to get hot when stator gets upgraded.
Yeah, I may need to look into that!
Nice work!
That airbox and air filter setup seems like the antithesis of performance and all the way towards minimalist. Makes me appreciate the size, design and retainer mechanism of the DRZ400.
Yeah, it's not my favorite 🤣
Lots of good info there, thanks man.
Thank you!!!
Thanks for including us in the thinking through process with the occasional "oopseys,"😮 😅
Next time you replace electrical work, try to use only copper connectors instead of aluminum. Copper lasts much longer and has better conductivity.
Your referring to the sealed connectors? I'm not sure what they are, but I don't believe they're aluminum?
J.I.S. screwdriver link is out of stock.
Swanky..I also run a li-ion battery in my DR650..I noticed the starter loves this..plus a big up high weight savings..for all bikes dust will clog an air cleaner up fast..keep-em clean..a stock stator has limited accessories use..might wanna check it..those lights are a huge draw..pro cycle has some good info on this also sells a high output stator..good on ya swank..enjoy your vids..keep the shiney side up :0)
With all the electrical accessories you have added, you may have overloaded, exceeded the stators capacity.
They're all pretty low amp draws, carplay unit is less than 1 amp and the lights mixed with the LED headlight bulb actually cancel each other out since the stock halogen bulb draws so much.
I had no idea that drain plug was there in the air box. Great video. Thanks
Woah! That's really strange. Glad it was an easy fix!
We do not grease our filter lips the oil is sufficient, and never have issues and we live and ride in the harsh environments of the Arizona desert.
Great episode, I blew my starter relay on my DR the day I filmed single track lol
Thank you! Oh NO!!! That's no good!
Jees, just buy the Eagle Mike Allen bolts.
@slalomking procycle for dr eagle for klr in my opinion might as well get the breath easy kit that come with them and upgraded jetting
Buy a RE maintenance is much easier
That’s the problem, splitting the case to change gearing, too much trouble.
Grease amount looked good...hard to get too much..both filter issues are a potential problem
Glad to hear that, thanks! Yeah, hard to say. Glad to have it fixed up now though!
Always enjoy the videos Ben , makes me wonder what you have up your sleeve for winter. Another sled?
Thanks!!! I'm glad to hear that! If we do get some snow, I'll definitely be out on Freeride 800 a bit! But I'll keep riding the bikes, just need to put on the heated gear and grip studs!
Check your fuses & charging system. It seems to be an electrical issue.
You should have 1 to 2 volts over battery voltage, charging system output.
Good idea! I'll have to find my multimeter though... Haha.
JIS screwdrivers (Vessel) are the first necessity if you are working on Japanese bikes and don't want to go psychotic
The DRZ 400 and DR650 when you maintain stock engineering are unbreakable motorcycles. If you kill one it's done intentionally or out of negligence
Yeah, they do seem to be pretty solid machines!
Ben...the factory style link is the same as the breather filter.....can you send the link to the plugs....need to set up my rally tower to a relay to shut down with the key. Great trouble shooting....if you have any more bikes, you would need a full time service guy just for preventive maintenance....😁😁 Garth
Oh, oops! Thanks for letting me know!!! Here's the correct affiliate link: amzn.to/3NUuz8x
Haha yeah, it's getting out of hand 🤣.
Good stuff!!
Dave marking territory.
🤣 always!
Hello!
We got wild horses, beartooth pass and ghost towns and stuff a guy could go see
Beartooth pass and Chief Joseph highway are a must! One of the nicest rides in the country.
My dad was out that way this summer on my old T7! I think we'll try to do some adventures next year, not sure where yet though.
@SwankyCatProductions just give me a heads up i can show ya around
@@c0ck_l2oach75 i live 45 minutes from it
I bet none of them fixed it. It was probably your kickstand switch, and the problem will come back. Or your exhaust valve sensor is malfunctioning.
I know, you only did three things to it.
Plus put it inside. And probably cleaned it up a bit.
I don't believe the kickstand switch would drain the battery or explain the lack of lights?
You should contact Motorcycle MD.
And yes it's a RUclips channel.
Huh, I'll have to look them up!
Pulling that snorkel out is quite stupid unless you like water dust and dirt in your filter
So you've got the red hot wire out chilling ready to short out at any given vibration... Probably want to cover that metal bit.
The fused carplay & aux light wires? What metal??? The hose clamp?
@@SwankyCatProductions, Look at your new pigtail splice by the battery. It looks like you have a red wire chilling out in the open for your next accessory. 26:24-44-ish
Check your fuses & charging system. It seems to be an electrical issue.
I'm fairly certain it was the carplay unit, but not positive... Time will tell!
@@SwankyCatProductions I think he means your protective eye glasses in the video.
100% of items that fail on my DR are items I have added or replaced with "upgrade*" parts...
Haha Yeah. It's nice and simple, until we add all the accessories!
Man, I really love the DR, but I HATE the air filter set up. Trying to hold that little retainer on a twin air with one hand while putting the screw in with the other illicits foul language every time.
Haha 😆 yeah it's definitely not the easiest design to work with!
How did you manage to kill a dr 650
🤣
Modesty
😆
Soooo… you lured me in with XR650l content. Got me all excited by talking about and building it for just what I want to do with mine. Then you yanked the rug out from underneath me and are forcing me to watch a bunch of content about the other bike that was on my list when I purchased the XRl. For shame Swanky, for shame.
🤣 Sorry man!!! I've been missing the XR as well. It'll be in this weekends video and I've got a few things I need to get to on it as well!
@@SwankyCatProductions yay!!
Bro...there are reasons that XR'S have a long, and prestigious, off road racing pedigree...and Suzuki's don't.
You bet on the wrong horse.
But the reasons we prefer them over XRs just keep rearing their ugly heads.....🤷♂️
I'm glad you're getting out and enjoying your DR. That's great! Ride safe!
🇮🇳❤👌❤👌❤💯💯💯💯💯
Nice work Ben! Now go enjoy a Spotted Cow or something 😁
Ha ha thanks!!!
200 watt stator and you're putting a bunch of dumb electronics on it. Holy Squid God...
As a matter of fact, I've added less than 7 cumulative watts over the original load.
Blatent lies, nobody kills the mighty DR so quickly! Dead lithium battery so soon after riding? Check your electrical system, that battery should be charged!
As Mark Twain would say, rumors of the DR being a good bike are greatly exaggerated
@@slalomkingi think mark Twain said even an idiot can break an anvil
Jesus, does this guy ever get to the point? Unwatchable
No, he doesn’t
And why would he? He can make ten more video's about it though.
It's not a "short", it's content. Please feel free not to watch and please don't use his name that way.

I unsubscribed because you sold the KLR 650. I’m not finishing this video. You should have kept the MULE
Noone cares. Move on if you dont enjoy the content. Klr, dr, or xr the content is still relevant and interesting.
He will get another
There are over a dozen gen 3 KLRs around me that have been for sale all year but haven't moved. The bike is 100lbs heavier than a DR. People who want a bike that heavy get the Tenere 700.
Lol. These people telling you to leave someone else's page... kinda like you can't say nothing but they can...
What a goofy and immature comment.
