My experience is similar to Damian's too. I received a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design at a non-architectural program. I started working at a architecture firm after taking AutoCAD drafting class at a community college (2002). My portfolio and my final thesis project (which I still had) aligned with the firm's type of work and they hired me (2007) with little formal architectural experience. I did have hands on construction experience (know how to build) and did a stint as an electrical apprentice during one summer break between semesters. Working at the firm was exciting and encouraged me to look into what I need to do to get my architect license and found out California allows persons to work under (and mentored by) a licensed architect for 8 years and verified by the mentor architect with signed form to NCARB. This made me eligible to take the AREs (~2016). I didn't start the work experience verification process until I moved firms and had another mentor architect that showed me the path to licensure. This new firm had several others taking the AREs which help to encourage me to begin the ARE 5.0 and start tracking my AXP hours. I completed my 6 tests in 10 months (2018)! At this point in time I have been working for 11 years and complete all my AXP hours. I started my CSE studies in 2019 (used the "Whole Enchilada" study material). Scheduled my test in advance for 06/2020 just before COVID started. I missed my test date because the testing center was shut down and was reopened and mistakenly thought my center was still closed. Fast-forward Jan. 2021, I was determine to take and pass the CSE this year. I took the CSE on July 13, (used the 4th of July holiday and took time off Thursday, Friday & Monday before my test). I actually worked a half day on Tuesday before my test scheduled for 1:30p and I passed on my first time! Anyone who has a passion for design, building and creating built environments, don't give up. There's a pathway for you in California (check the NCARB website for your state's requirements) to become a licensed architect through architectural mentorship (not including the AXP). Anything is possible if you put in the time effort and build professional relations to make your goals a reality.

Very like you💕 I am a Californja architectural designer with only 2 years experience. Your video is very encouraging and give me courage to deal with my ARE exam. Hope you could share more information on how to study the PCM?

Wonderful! I'm so glad you're inspired to move forward with the ARE. You can check out my other 2 videos on the ARE where I break down the exams a little further and provide info on the study material I used. Let me know if you have any questions after you watch, thanks!

Hey Bryn, similar to Damian, my path to licensure is a bit different too. I am using a Foreign Candidate path to licensure that NCARB allows. If you think your viewers would like to hear about that experience, I would be happy to talk about it. Let me know! Btw, I enjoy your videos! They are very helpful.
