    I think I understand it... I'm in the same process of all you (I don't speak English perfectly) I will try to explain it as best as I can.
    1. In suction position. Normal position. Meewing. You should be in that position
    2. With you tip of the tongue go back barely touching the ridged area.Wich means that you almost touch the beginning of that zone.
    3. When you barely feel the ridged zone, go down in fluent movement (it will get faster over time) collect the saliva and go up to "the spot" and the swallowing process will initiate.
    The spot: is where the tip of the tongue rest. Just in the soft spot of the palate. Right up behind the two main frontal teeth.
    The movement of the tip of the tongue when sweeping: it is little to the back, NOT STRAIGHT DOWN FROM THE RESTING POSITION. Just by by going a little bit backwards with the tip, just a bit, and going down the sweeping is done. The Vacuum creating by the mewing will be gone. And when you go to the spot so the saliva.
    Like if it works for you. And peace.

    Ok, I am going to explain this to everyone so it can help because I had trouble understanding and doing this for weeks but I feel like I finally got it.
    The "tongue sweep" is used to collect saliva in your mouth instead of using your cheeks, the buccinator muscles (don't use those). To be able to do this sweep properly, your tongue (especially the posterior third) has to be glued up to the roof of your mouth. Essentially you have to be mewing properly in order to do this. If you can't do this sweep chances are you're not properly pushing up the root of your tongue into your palate, which was my case even though I thought I was mewing properly after a month.
    So once you learn how to properly mew and stop the habit of using your cheeks to move or swallow saliva, you'll be able to make the front of your tongue just do a little dance to collect saliva while keeping the rest of your tongue in place.
    I hope this helps all of you as this was the most tricky thing for me in terms of mewing although Dr. Mew says it is simple, which it is not. It truly is all about persistence and habit changing to be successful in this so be patient and don't give up.

      That's what I thought as well, but when you do the movement with the tip of the tongue to scoop the saliva as you explained, it creates a suction on the front teeth and the lips, I don't know if that's a good thing.

  • @DyingDarkLight
    @DyingDarkLight 5 лет назад +10

    For myself I run the tip of my tongue down my front teeth. If you're like me and have fixed retainers on the top and bottom it's a good reference point, however you will cut your toung a little. Considering that you have already figured out where your tongue is in your mouth, and are confident you can hold good posture, try this: Wile you keep good suction drop the tip of your tongue down. If you have good suction the tip will always be attracted to a surface in this case your teeth. When the tip is dropped, your saliva will be sucked from underneath your tongue and inbetween your teeth and will pool on the tip. Now just press your tong back up on your pallet and you will naturally begin a wave with your tongue, swallowing your saliva. You will know when you are doing it right beacause the pressure of the suckhold will do most of the work, all you really need to think about is bringing that tongue down.

    • @DyingDarkLight
      @DyingDarkLight 5 лет назад +1

      @@mewself4442 getting your back half of the toungue touching the soft portion of your pallet. This I found difficult myself and it took a lot of messing around to get an awerness of everything. Easy way to know, and I think I got this from Mike Mew, is to sit up straight then hold your breath. If you feel a giant lump come up to the soft pallet that's the back half. Now try breathing through your nose without dropping the toungue. I'll admit it's hard at first, just keep trying it. I noticed that it all so made it easier to keep my head straight, which is what you want.

    Dr. Mew, it would be helpful to make some videos where you explain exactly which muscles of the tongue, face and throat are active during the exercises. I can sense that the muscles that hold up the tongue (palatoglossus, styloglossus) must have something to do with it. But there are so many muscles there - some clarity would be much appreciated. Thanks for all your work.

  • @coach.hybrid
    @coach.hybrid Год назад +11

    Was a little confused with your explanation but after a year of practice I have managed to do the tongue sweep perfectly without much of a college effort.
    Here is my explanation of it.
    When mewing, your back third should be engaged on the soft palate.
    You want to bring that back third down temporarily so that you can use you tip of the tongue. The tip of the tongue then picks up the saliva from the salivary glands right below the tip(behind the lower front teeth), while doing this you want to very very slightly suck the saliva while picking it up with the tip. After this, the saliva is now in the back of tongue. At this point you want to perform a proper mew push swallow. Your tongue will now be suctioned to the roof of your mouth again. Feel free to put the back third of the tongue up again to complete the seal.

    Thank you, amazing coincidence to happen to have my mind opened to this. My brother somehow discussed the topic of mouth breathing and how correct breathing was correlated with the quintessential "African well developed face", to which I doubted at first and then said something like genetics could be the reason for straight teeth. But I have always had an open and questioning mind...so I entered the rabbit hole.
    I have actually a good forward face, so I'm not in a bad place, but basically had braces, no extractions, but have developed a relatively narrow palate(not optimal). I have two brothers, the youngest needs no braces and has the best jaw, my other had braces, extractions and the change in his face is so apparent looking at old pictures - it's so amazing to see all this. We would be a great set of brothers to study.
    Fortunately I have a good looking mother, god cheekbones and forward developed maxilla etc, good teeth. My dad is actually really bad looking 😂 low hanging face, not developed and the worst teeth, so bad and yellow now. My point...it's not as simple as genetics is involved especially with my parents having a child.
    I'm in my twenties and never thought braces did much for me apart from straighten the bottom teeth. Having my tongue strongly pushing up has made a noticeable improvement to me at the very least and I believe made me better looking.
    Thank you sincerely, I just wish this information became normalised and in the conscious sphere because as it stands we sort of know, but don't! It's a funny state of affairs.

      Don't worry about the teeth touching too much is my experience. When I dont apply too much force they lightly touch when my mouth is closed. I will focus a few times throughout the day about making a good effort to really force my tongue to the roof of the mouth. Relax about it if you think you're doing it right!

    Thank you very much! As I've been working on this I notice that when I "think about it" I forget how to swallow. Crazy! But little by little I'm putting it under my conscious control. In figuring it out I've noticed that sometimes instead of dipping the tip of my tongue down and scooping the saliva up on the roof of my mouth I sort of flutter the edges of the mid-section and the saliva flows up by my cheeks. I think all this work is rehabilitating my saliva glands. I hope it's good for my gut. Thanks again!

    I typed in "orthotropics saliva" and came across this video. I was hoping to find out if it was normal to salivate so much while trying to hold your tongue at the palate. I have crooked, bunched teeth, an underbite, and facial asymmetry. I am a 30 year old indigenous Alaskan female trying to correct my bone structure so my teeth can fit in my face and my lower teeth will stop chipping away at my top teeth. I find that keeping my tongue at the roof of my mouth is especially tricky. The suction hold that is recommended lasts only a few seconds due to my over production of saliva that seems to occur when i have my tongue at the roof of my mouth. My lips twitch, my tongue seems to mindlessly move about, I am trying real hard to fix my face on my own.

      Found your comment looking for the answer to this, @orthotropics would love answer to this.

    • @tapsubscribe
      @tapsubscribe 5 лет назад +6

      Excessive salivation is normal at the start, because once your mouth is accustomed to your new tongue posture/function, it should decrease. Lip twitching is also normal if you can't close your mouth properly, say because of your underbite, as well as the fact that most modern humans have downward/down swung faces. This means the face is longer (i.e., tip of nose to tip of chin is longer) than it should be and the lower lip has to compensate somehow to meet the upper lip which is mainly through the chin muscle (mentalis) rolling up the soft tissue up and around the chin to help the lips meet together. This damages the form of chin tip and Mike Mew recommends to avoid it if possible.
      (This video of his talks about this point here but the whole video is good to finish too - keep your lips sealed at night - ruclips.net/video/0lV9zv2_vcg/видео.html) If you have a severe underbite and other major teeth issues you should probably visit a specialist because I only read mewing can help with a mild underbite, not to mention adult change is slight and very long to take place. However, mewing is a lifestyle, not a 3-year thing, as it is just the correct posture and function to use for the rest of your life. That is to say, major issues probably won't be solved in the short-term through mewing for adults. I would like to naturally fix my teeth issues on my own, but having appliances should also aid in mewing as well, such as an palate expander to increase palate distance to help fit your tongue. It sucks to have your tongue squished and enough space on the roof of mouth means that the tongue can perform 100% (mewing 100%) to make more progress, not to say you can't make any with a narrow palate, only less, maybe much less. This is what I understand so far from my research and am just sharing it to you. Definitely, a lot more researched needed regarding specific appliances, however.
      Peace to you and all :)

    I have a nervous habit that I often do all day long. With my mouth closed, I've got the front of my tongue pushed up against the palate just behind the top teeth, and I squish a small amount of saliva with force against the dome of my palate using a rapid flexing of my tongue and by sucking back and forth the pressure in my closed mouth. Most of the time, I don't even realize I'm doing it. It can be loud enough that other people hear it. My wife scolds me to stop "swishing my spit," but like I say, I'm not conscious of the fact that I'm doing it most of the time, and sometimes, if I've been doing it long enough, it can end up giving me a headache. I think a lot of the time I'm playing a beat this way in my mouth, or sometimes it's an accompaniment to some song that's going through my head. I just watched this video of two girls playing "Wipe Out" with ukuleles and I realize a lot of the time I've spent writing this comment I've been playing "Wipe Out" with my spit:
    ruclips.net/video/BRuoJxfKTjM/видео.html
    My wife wants me to find a way to stop this annoying habit, but I can't imagine there's a way to stop it. I wonder if Dr. Mew would actually consider it a healthy exercise for my tongue?

    It's good that you just keep making videos with different explanations. It shows you keep thinking it through in trying to help people. The audio quality wasn't that good though, a lot of white noise.
    I've also got a question though... In all your years of changing jaw deformations, have you noticed any correlation in 1. jaw formation/tongue posture and 2. abdominal activation/posture and breathing habits? What are your experiences/thoughts in this?
    I was wondering about this because I use my abdominal muscles (especially diaphragm) to create the vacuum behind my tongue. I notice that my belly is being sucked in while doing that. So my thought is, if someone stands with belly out, he/she is more likely to have a jaw deformation as a result to non abdominal/diaphragmal activation

    can a lingual frenectomy make it easier to put the tongue on the entire palate? even if there is no actual tongue tie "disorder".when i attempt to get it up there, the underside of my jaw gets that blown up frog appearance

    Correct me if im wrong but do you have to keep the back and middle-ish of the tongue still on the roof and bring the tip of your tongue down to allow the saliva to collect on it then push the tip of the tongue back up with the saliva still on it then swallow it?

    i still dont get it everytime i try it i kinda suck it up and use my lips a tiny bit to help get everything on my tongue, does the back of my tongue stay on the roof of my mouth while sweeping?

    I have trouble breathing through my nose when holding my tongue in proper position. What am i doing wrong?

    • @VulcanXIV

      Having trouble breathing is a sign that you're doing it wrong it seems. He's mentioned this many times in his videos. It's either because there isn't sufficient room in your jaw to allow proper tongue posture AND breathing, or you reached the point where you actually feel what you're muscles are doing wrong and you have to learn how to breathe through your nose even when your proper tongue posture is blocking it

      +VulcanXIV But what can be done in this case? should I keep my back part of my tongue on top to only such an extent where it's comfortable enough to breathe or should I inhale and then block the air passage and then exhale and apply pressure again...?

    i simply just do not understand how i'm suppose to suck in saliva without touching my bottom teeth with my tongue, it's just impossible, the saliva stays absolutely still no matter how hard i suck until i can make a seal in my mouth by touching both my bottom and upper teeth

  • @nofx7058

    sometimes when I do a wave motion and collect all the liquid in my mouth on the tongue and swallow, a kind of vacuum is created in the mouth which forces the cheeks, lips and lower part of the mouth to be pulled inward and this is uncofortable. If I leave a small amount of liquid this does not happen. Is it normal to have a small amount of saliva in your mouth all the time?

    While doing the sweap, at the part where the tip of the tounge gets to the bottom and then up again my tounge slighty touches the backside of the incisors that are down. Is this right??

      Can you please explain how you do it? I try doing the "sweep" but i can't gather enough saliva, and after 1 minute my mouth is full of saliva

    • @cxt7181
      @cxt7181 5 лет назад

      Kuzaki V As he said there's not much to it you scoop your mouth from the stop where your tongue tip rests down to the bottom and then back to your resting spot. Maybe elaborate on what the problem is?

      @majin rice Thank you for answering me but when i try to do it i can't continue for more than 1 or 2 minutes cause my whole mouth fills with saliva, not only the bottom but my cheeks, can i use suction when doing it or should i just use my tongue?
