Allready happened to me. Watched Dan's videos and now I have an A500 (Still have to collect it from the UK), a DVD copy of Amiga forever, 3 PC's running Amiga emulation one of which is working toward being a dedicated build, and 1 android tablet also running as an emulated amiga.....and that is just the beginning....

Just bought this off AmigaKit along with a CF Hard Drive + Backplate (just makes it easier being able to plug the card in the back rather than having to open up) and tbh I'll use the transfer kit for the 600 anyway when I move onto refreshing that next. I'm thinking I probably won't put a hard drive in the 600 and run games on that from floppy instead (just so I have the option of having those disk sounds available if we fancy it :)

Great Video and at last now I can get my 300+ Amiga Floppy Disks out of my Attic that have been carefully stored for about 15 years now. Plus I have a near mint A1200 that was only used for a few weeks before I packed it away as I was working away for 6 months so I have never bothered to use it much because I had my A500+, I cant wait now to put all those Disks onto a 4GB Sandisk. Will let you guys know in a later date how I get on. Wish me luck!

Nice video. I've been restoring some of my old Amiga 500 files lately and for this kind of hardware I found the best solution to be Cloanto's Amiga Explorer and a NULL MODEM serial cable. The hardest part is finding a good cable that works 100% with Amiga Explorer. The one I have doesn't work in the initial steps of installing the software in the Amiga side but after finding a workaround it works perfectly.
    Cheers.

To write floppies you just need a bit of software like TransADF, that will write it back to a floppy. Find it on Aminet at disk/misc/TransADF.lha

This video gives an extremely rough overview and mainly the hardware involved in "How to" transfer files from PC to Amiga, however for people new to the Amiga, the CF card and PCMCIA card route is pretty difficult even for me who has quite a good knowledge of file systems and partitioning etc. I'm sure that some of the links are useful but it might be more encouraging to see more in depth how to videos, because i've only seen one or two on RUclips that were in depth enough to fully install an Amiga O/S onto a CF card and actually run the games. from the CF card on that operating system.

    • @g1998k
      @g1998k 7 лет назад +1

That is for certain. The major problem is also finding the time to do all this work. A good way to go was to visit Ebay and order a preformatted 4gb CF card with Workbench pre installed and even with some software. Pretty cheap comparing to my cost per hour..)))

Just this year I finally got my original Amiga hard disk hook up to my PC and ported to WinUAE, it was dead weird watching my classic Amiga set up boot up on a Windows machine. But great vid, I mostly use the CD solution but how good emulation is I use my real Amiga less and less.

  • @danwood_uk

@00Harbinja00 Thanks, yeah the A1200 runs 3.9, it has an 030 accelerator in it which brings it up to 25mhz and around 70 megs of RAM.
I'm going to do a full video on the A1200 soon, I've been setting it up a bit more lately.

There is yet another way, and that is using the Amiga and PC serial ports. The downsides are that it can be slow, depending on what speed Amiga you have, and that serial ports on PCs are less common now. Also, and this also applies to all the solutions you've mentioned, one really does require a hard drive in the Amiga, or at least RAM expansion and/or a second floppy drive. CrossDOS came with Workbench 2.1 as well as 3.0, there is also a free program called MessyDOS for WB1.3 users.

  • @FiXato

You could search on Amibay for Kipper2k's "Amiga 500 4/8mb fastmem boards with IDE". I haven't tried it myself yet, but it looks like an interesting solution.
You can also look for the HxC Floppy Emulator to replace your floppy drive with an SD card reader.

  • @danwood_uk
    @danwood_uk  13 лет назад

@Peppzz On a PC you'd need to load it via WinUAE, or on an Amiga, something like Diskimagegui will show them, there are also tools like ADFTODISK to write them to real floppies.

Well, if I insert the CF into the adapter nothing happens (e.g. it is not mounted nor shown on the workbench desktop). The driver is installed as supposed. That's on a OS 3.9. Do i miss something ? Could the CF be incompatible with the adapter, although I used to have this CF installed internally and boot from it ?

I like your video, but I miss some information about HOW you actually do things. For example, using the PCMCIA card + CF card; On which machine do you format the CF card? And which file system do you give it? And what about preparing a CF card in WinUAE, on which machine do you format the CF card first, and in what file system? And when using the CF card in WinUAE, how do you add it? Using a standard directory or a hardfile? How about using a serial or parallel cable for file transfer?

I'm assuming a 512MB CF card will get me pretty far (Are you even close to using 4GB on the A600?) [Edit; Actually - Scratch that, the largest working card I've got is 128MB =/).
Is getting the CF adapter just my best way of getting to play any downloaded game on my Amiga A600?
How do I add games to the CF card? Do I have to get the adapter, install it, format the CF card.. and then what? Plug it into the PC and it will read fine?

Not sure if that would work. What you want is a monitor that can take the old analogue composite video cables. On the back of your machine I think it is labelled "COL-R" or something similar.. anyway it is the yellow Composite video jack. An LCD screen that was made for use as a TV is likely to have a composite jack but do double check since everything is going digital these days it seems

I tried getting my A600 on the Internet a couple of years ago. Bought a PCMCIA wireless network card (prism2 chipset), that is supposed to work with the A600. Well, try to get an A500 with at least 1MB memory, an external floppy drive would also be handy. Also get some DSDD floppies, you usually find folk on eBay selling collections of 'blanks' or coverdisks that can be reformatted. When you get your Amiga, look me up.

Yes, you can do it on an A500, but it really requires >1MB of RAM, and a second floppy drive, or hard drive. They're less common on A500's. What version of Kickstart and Workbench do you have?

I found this vid really useful thanks :) Any ideas how would I go about doing the reverse? I got lots of amiga floppies with pics, animations and tunes on that I created & I'd like to back up & read on a PC under emulation. I think the easiest way be to use the PCI slot/CF card method, then use something like EASYADF to make an ADF image of the floppy? After that it just be a case of connecting the compact flash card to a PC using card reader and using WinUAE to access the images?

Hi Dan Thanks for the great work and videos realy good stuff, my favourite and by far the easiest method was without doubt hands down,The GOTEK AS LONG AS YOU INSTALL THE SELECTOR adf file along with all the other adf gaming files. hours of joy and memories came flooding back.......:-)

      @Tech-geeky 2 года назад

Too late... memories HAVE already flooded back. Having got rid of my hardware long ago. :( Unfortunately, if i wasn't stuck in a 'convenient world' i'd probably get the hardware again..
Kinda sad i'm choosing emulation over nostalgic "hardware", but i guess as long as i get all my Amiga content in digital form, that probably makes up for it anyway..
But there is always something holding Amiga hardware which makes it better. You can never take *that* part away.

Hi Dan, it might be helpful to let people know that the WHDLoad only supports 2MB RAM upwards as it uses it's own kickstart in memory (no kickstart disks used to boot the machine obviously).
Another thing is the A600 and A1200 Kickstart has to be at least the 37.300 (limited to 40MB HDD), the 37.350 (up to 4GB).
I'd recommend going up to a 3.1 ROM on both A600 and A1200 to solve any issues.
Also workbench has to be 2.1 at least to have the HDToolBox added to the OS software disks...
Another thing *phew!* is some CF cards are not supported by the Amiga.
Refer to this page for more info: eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=28249
I found all of this out the hard way trying to get this all to run!!
I'm in the process of recording and showing how this is done on my channel (and don't forget Google is your best friend!)
    Hope this helps you all,

Your TV output has an RF connector, you plug in your cable to your TV and then your Tv adapter, tune in your TV...
I on the otherhand... Used the Video Out which is S-Video and pumped the output directly in to the S-Video port on my HD TV.

I think by far the easiest would be over network, or PCMCIA. Otherwise you have to open up your Amiga every time to add to the card These days your always gonna be "oh dam, i forgot x utility/game" So for me network access for be far better... It would probably take ages initially copying, but so would any other way.

HI, great video btw! One question, do you know of anyone who would prepare (with all the needed SW and possible with most of the games) and sell the 4GB Compact Flash so I could use out of the box without the need to set it up by myself? I would be willing to pay for it in order to avoid doing it.

So far all I have seen is information about Amiga and the work bench disk issue (which is why I am looking for a copy of an image to kick start my Amiga500)
Every site I look at that claims to have a downloadable image of the file has information but not the image and these are supposed to be enthusiasts who want to see Amiga's run free in the wild, etc...
Could you as as someone who is making videos of the Amiga system please help me get the one I just bought up and running again, I bought it for my son (just turned 9) hoping to get him in to older systems and learn programming and not that BS that they teach in schools now...
The system I have bought is one of the German made machines (according to the label) its a:
    Model A500
    Serial No 02- 800352
    MADE IN GERMANY
then something in German then the rest is in English about if you open for repair... etc,.
By the looks of it, the seals are intact, so its never been modified but I looked in the part where a hard disk is meant to go and I find that it has a board with ROM's on it and a Switch set to the On position.
Powering up I get the Amiga Workbench v1.3 logo and the floppydisk drive is waiting for a disk that I don't have.
Another point to make is that the Amiga I have does not have any USB / Flash ports or PCMCIA port to use the compact flash ADF's yet all tutorials I have seen so far have not been helpful because they all refer to PCMCIA ports being used.

14:22 for years i try and try untill find out amiga not read pcmcia slot if you have more than 4mb ram LOL.
so basically every yet again new accelerator card comes 8mb hahah. you need disable memory or revome card to read. easiest way was amiga explorer its slow but who cares it worked xD no need floppy or software.
you first send software thru serial port. then launch that software and can send files and read/write floppy on amiga.
dont know why it took 30minute write floppy. mayby it verify every write bcoz looked like it looping same %
