  • A live performance without an audience by Prof. Dror Biran College-Conservatory of Music University of Cincinnati.
Winner of top prizes at the M.K Čiurlionis International Piano Competition, the Cleveland International Piano among others, Israeli-American pianist Dror Biran has been described by The Cleveland Plain Dealer as “his fortissimos crashed and roared, but next to them came pianissimos that whispered seductively…he has technique to burn and uses it effectively.” Biran’s superb tonal control combined with interesting phrasing and voicing has won him consistent critical acclaim and enthusiastic audiences.
Biran has performed widely as a soloist with major orchestras including the Lithuanian Philharmonic Orchestra, RTVE Symphony Orchestra of Spain, Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. He has played under the batons of Etinger, Rodan, Gueller, Gacia Asensio, Mester, Lane and others. His concert tours have taken him to the United States, Israel and South Africa, South Korea and China along with Eastern and Western Europe.
As an avid chamber musician, Biran has appeared on a regular basis with different music ensembles such as Carmel, Amernet and Aviv String Quartets. He premiered works by Grawemyer and Rome Award winners such as York Höler and Sebastian Currier. His concerts have been broadcasted by WUOL, WCLV, WQXR, The Voice of Music - Israel and Classic FM South Africa, among others. Biran can be heard on the JMC (Jerusalem Music Centre) and Centaur labels
A recipient of multiple scholarships from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation for distinguished musicians, Biran began his piano studies with Ms. Lily Dorfman, and mentored by Arie Vardi, Paul Schenly, Daniel Shapiro and Lee Luvisi. He graduated from Rubin Academy of Music at Tel-Aviv University and the Cleveland Institute of Music where he received his doctorate degree in piano performance.
Biran taught at the University of Louisville, Youngstown State University and Case Western Reserve University. Currently, he serves as Professor of Piano at the College-Conservatory of Music University of Cincinnati.

A uniquely lyrical, precious, expressive, poetic, singing interpretation, full of love in each and every note. The pianist's inner world and the universality of the music are harmonized in a very rare kind of intimacy. Masterful rendition of all architectural and contrapuntal elements. Truly original and personal yet also very much Bach idiomatic, a new word said in the interpretation of Bach at the piano. Thank you for this gift! Will keep listening and enjoying.

Pablo Casals, one of the greatest musicians of the ages, used to begin every morning in his cottage by the sea at the piano with a Bach Prelude. He called it "a blessing on the house". This man, with his gorgeous tone, (may I say, unrivaled by any recorded artist I have listened to), his ardent attention to the voicing and the emotional depth of his playing brings Casals to life once again.

Easy to understand why Mozart had a crisis of confidence when he was finally exposed to Bach. Fortunately for us he overcame his astonishment...
Bach truly was a Fountain of thema, if that's the term, one great musical idea after another, fugues emerging fantastic figures effortlessly woven, so complex so complete so elegant, it beggars the imagination
what a blessing to be able to play this wonder, to be able to turn it over in ones hands

  • @michaldevetsedm1882
    @michaldevetsedm1882 2 года назад +2

It's not a good idea to play WTC fugues with the pedal. Everything becomes blurry, inarticulate, half of the beauty which mostly stands on the Bach's masterful using of contrapunct is lost. It goes directly against the very nature of Bach's music.

    • @janwillemheijbroek9107
      @janwillemheijbroek9107 Год назад +4

      I totally disagree with you.
Everything becomes clear, very articulate. The sound is so more beautiful with the use of the pedals.
Finally the music breathlessness comes alive!
It gives the opportunity to the performer to create his personal interpretation, with the artist, the poet at work.
In this way he can communicate between the composer and the listener/ the public.
In stead of "dry" merely playing the notes, you get melodious music with depth.
I know for sure Bach would have loved this performance, but he lived too early to know the rich sound of the piano.
All this nonsense about how it should be played and in which tempo shows only the insecurity and rigidity of those kind of players i.e. those without a vision, without artistry, without character.

@@janwillemheijbroek9107 , Dear friend! Excuse me for my opinion. My ideal Bach performer is Glen Gould. He opened to us an understanding of the true meaning of Bach's music. Dror Biran is undoubtedly a talented pianist with a good sound. His performance, I agree with you, is an event for the performers of Bach's works. But from here we are looking for our own Bach. After all, Bach is for each of us and we find ourselves in his music with the help of performers. If you have found your performer, who opened the endless horizons of Bach to you, I am infinitely glad to be with you.
Perhaps I spoke too harshly about Dror Biran. But his performance is too romantic for me.
Our happiness is that we met with you along with the music of Bach.

Thanks for your reaction, which sounds better than your first comment: "Execution failed".
This sounds like the judge has spoken and this is the verdict. No discussion possible.
In French you have a verb: "C'est le ton qui fait la musique". Literally translated: it is the tone wich makes the music.
Of course you do not need to apologise or excuse for your opinion.
      Evidently Gould is your hero.
For me Sviatoslav Richter is a hero, in my opinion (one of ) the best player(s) of all times. And now I have discovered a new hero: Dror Biran!
About taste or opinions you can discuss endlessly.
      The verb in Latin:
" de gustibus non est disputandum"!
is very adequate and to the point.
The important thing is that we respectfully agree to disagree about the best or the favourite performance of a certain work of Bach ( or other works of other composers).
