So much more of a representation than the other trees. I would definitely be proud of what you made.
Try gluing a long piece of strong metal rod or a long nail into the bottom of the trunk. Then chuck that into a drill. It is so much easier to sand.

Yeah, I need to work on efficiency with the trunks for sure. That is a much better way to go!

@@StevesTrains now make a few dozen more and build a layout around them lol

@@brodrick3164I’ve thought a bit about how to make a lot of these. Like building some jigs for drilling the holes and sanding/turning down the trunks. An excuse to buy a lathe?

@@StevesTrains The cheapest utility 2x4 cut down to 2 feet then ripped to two 2x2’s. A nail in the end chucked into a drill while using a sheet of 80 grit like a sling. Quick easy trunks. And if you can’t rip down just get the cheapest 2x2. I have a lathe and would never use it to make scale trunks then again I have never used it to make scale tree trunks. 12 inch lathe so it would not work for your size trees Steve. A large enough lathe would not outweigh the cost of buying custom trees.
Just a thought. Try painting the branches before you glue them on the trunk. Or as you glue them on the trunk.

More good ideas. I was thinking of one of those mini micro mark lathes. Yeah, I should have painted the JTT branches in advance. Lots of things learned doing this first one for the next time.

Great creativity and design. Your step by step demonstration is very helpful, and the end model looks terrific! Kinda reminds me of the sequoias in CA. Also, thanks for sharing product supplier links!

Mainly trying to produce a tree as durable as possible, that was the main goal. This will need to get shipped and will be on a display layout that will get moved a lot (maybe taken to shows, etc) so tried to come up with a tree that could survive a lot of abuse but still looks good. Certainly not the cheapest way, but it is super durable. I’ll make a lot of construction improvements for the next ones to make it go together faster (make some jigs, etc).

Steve, you're clutching your wood a little too tightly. 😮.
