This is a grade A intro. Absolutely loved the fact you captured taking a moment, looking at the issue and visualization of a the direction you wanted to go.
Your show is better than any on HBO or Netflix. Please make one discussing the pros and cons of different van configurations. For example, a toilet in the rear would be a disadvantage if the back door were to be opened at the wrong time, eh? Also, perhaps you could do a video about drop down beds from the ceiling for those with kids. Thanks. God bless you.
I think for about $50 you can get a screen that opens and closes with magnets and velcros to the opening. That said I can't wait to watch you build this totally insane screen door system.
Wow, wow, wow. I love this! You remind me so much of my Dad, which is a huge compliment. :) He was a mechanical engineer who could do/build anything - he remodeled and tweaked his 1967 VW camper to the max - even building his own high top. I really regret never working with him and picking up some of those skills. At the time I was growing up (I’m in my 60’s now) girls just didn’t do that. What a shame and a loss...so glad that’s different now. Anyway, really looking forward to seeing how your project turns out!
The lavender oil is a great idea. I hear mice are also an issue in vans. I wonder if orange oil would work for that...The lights look great! I just received mine (6.5 feet long). I ordered RGB.(Talk about Christmas lights!). I assumed they also contained white (some do, some don't). These don't so back they go....I'll bet the door makes a big difference in the feeling of the space inside and give it a much more homey feel. You could probably sell the van tomorrow for 50% more than you paid for it if you wanted.
I like the wood look better. I miss hearing the squeak of the spring and the slap of the screen door as it closed. If I was on a dead run out the door because Momma wasn't happy, the door would double slap LOL. Ahh, memories...
You get it, Missy! Many have said, just hang a screen with magnets. I didn't like that! I want that screen door slapping the door stops, it's part of life!
Hey hey you’re a thinker...love the armchair thinking process...Like the removable bench screen idea as gives uninterrupted bench surface, the fixed one doesn’t seem as spacious...may not be as easy to use the bench, clean, might encroach on the Masterchef-ing etc. Some mods we’ve done as a temporary thought first that have the option to be more permanent after we’ve used it a few times and change it up if we feel that is better. Cool stuff world needs thinkers and doers.
I’m liking your quirky way of thinking. Want to come fix up my rv? My husband says it’s my rv so anything to be done is up to me. That means I gotta find the chutzpah to actually tackle stuff way outside of my comfort zone. Starting on the list but truly envious of your skill level! Keep on keeping on, you’ve got a marvelously deprecating sense of humor that’s a joy to listen to.
I am curious about how you will create the opening in the screen to access that heavy Sprinter side door. I believe that is why most screens added to Sprinters are retractable. Anxiously awaiting your solution (my husband probably is not anxiously awaiting your solution).
I have been thinking about a screen door for a van for about a year and glad you finally decided to tackle it. I don’t like to open the sliding van door over and over and over. The only input I would have is that I would like some sort of acrylic insert so that I can slide the insert up and down to be able to let Aaron or close it off when the weather is hot and humid but I would still be able to see out at the same time and have an easy in and out. What are your thoughts on that? I have seen some screen doors with acrylic inserts in them. I hope you have two.
Hey!! Already subscribed to this channel and googled 'screen door for van conversion' and found the video! Planning to do a screen pocket door in my Toyota Sienna conversion. Thanks for the additional ideas!
@@HumbleRoad Thanks George! Your first episode bringing out the chair and pad and brainstorming in front of your van... I do that alllll the time! lol Definitely get pointers from your channel! Props for living my dream building custom vans!
Hmmmm. I dunno George. I'd struggle with the visual block or divide of a door frame between inside and outside, but regardless I can't wait for your next video!!
Wow ! This is gunna be a seriously interesting project. You have given me an idea for mine. I have an existing spare household aluminium security screen door stored in my garage. Maybe I could adjust it's size and build a custom wooden frame to mount it on. Or, maybe, I could make another cup of coffee, and just watch more RUclips videos !
I like the maple better. the white is a little meh uninteresting. and btw, thank you, I thought I was a crazy person...well maybe I still am, but I do the same thing. Me, a pad of paper, a pencil or pen, sit and stare into open spaces all the time when I'm trying to engineer something in my head. Appreciate the company ;)
Maybe the screen door can hing in and out? i think it will be easier to open and close the truck's sliding door from the inside. I don't recommend cutting the counter top if you are selling it in the future, add a strip of wood with powerful magnetic pellets at the edge of the cabinet below the counter top and cut out the lower portion of the door and add the same magnetic pellets to the screen door to hold the door in place. This may not work for you. Good luck with build, can't wait to see it!
Dude! I think you just broke the industry! The door can hinge out from within the jam, and the whole jam assembly can hinge in to shut the sliding door! Damn! I think that is a big solution! I think I'm gonna do it! You need to get credit for this!
www.amazon.ca/Double-Action-Spring-Swinging-Doors/dp/B01IRJS6EC/ref=pd_sbs_60_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=EDPRZ7JTZ8W8C8DCYC8M I was thinking about this dual action hings when you are planning to build a screen door. Good luck!
Funny, I have those very hinges on low mounted "saloon" doors between the kitchen and dining room. Keeps the dogs in one room and people can just walk right through without any effort.
I dunno... with the rounded contours that door could be quite difficult to make. Also prone to damage when accidentally opened too wide. Why not keep it simple: fly screen attached to the top with velcro, magnets on the side and magnets or weights in the bottom seam. Maybe have a friction fitted post going from the counter to the ceiling to give it some support half way through. That whole assembly could easily be stuffed in a little sack when not in use.
One of those simple big screens that you pull out from the side wouldn't work for you? Impressive editing magic on the screen door btw! I had to think a while to come up with how you probably did it :)
No room for the sliding screen. My cabinet dictates the design. I want a door, like on the back porch..more like a home. The screen door photo; in photoshop, silo 100% onto green, then I matted the screen portions at 50% green. In Premiere, key sample the 100% green and the 50% screen becomes semi transparent. easy peazy!
Ah, that makes sense. Sounds relatively easy in Premiere. I use Magix Video Deluxe. That's already a bit more difficult. I wish I had invested in Premiere while I was a student!
A very astute question, my dog loving friend. You are the first to ask. I have mocked up the install with cardboard. It does not interfere with the sliding back and forth , but when that passenger chair is spun around, facing rear, and you want to lounge in it, there is a "column" now, that I have decided I will get used to and it will, hopefully, be a non-issue. That is a gamble on my part, but I think the screen door is more of a benefit than the small "column" effect.
TONS OF VANARCHY yep, after looking over the project a little more, that's one of the adjustments I will make. No cutting the countertop. Notch the jam.
This was something I needed to do. I have been a contrarian all my life. Herd going right? I'm going left… I do not like the curtain screen. It's ugly and does not operate optimally.
Yes, Harley, you are correct. I just wanted something very specific in terms of design and function. And I like to build stuff.. Thanks for watching! Geo.

Geez...I hope the screen door will automatically close when you start the engine...can't have a screen door wide open driving down the road for God's sake.

I'm only sorry that I live in Italy... this is a project that deserves a recliner, bier and popcorn.
Pass the popcorn.
Dude...that screen door is fucking sick, bro. Very niiiiiice
Great idea! Stick with the natural look. The white won't look right, and will dirty faster IMO.

Great video editing by the way.
Love the screen door idea.
I like it, I think I will try to make mine a sliding screen door though.
Couldn't do a sliding screen door in this van. Too many existing fixtures to deal with. In the van I'm building now, I do like the idea.
I prefer a screen slider door (thinner). Then, that is just my preference! This will be fun to see.
I'm going for light and delicate. We shall see...
Great idea!
OKAY, my wine and I are ready to watch this new little adventure! Why not look into a bi-fold screen door? LOL Love your videos!
Bi-fold is what I was thinking when I watched this.

It is a concern. I do love that great wide open expanse. I will approach delicately, scale and proportion are the keys.

Ask your wife what she wants before the peanut factory. Screens are a good thing. I like the magnetic ones full screen across the door width.
Where is the video of the build out/reveal? Never mind, I found it. Just search on episode number. 😊
Match the wood!
📏📐🔩🛠color match it w/front interior cabinet↩
Nice idea. Arts you putting this in your new vans?
Absolutely!
How will this affect the front passenger seat forward/backward mobility?
And where will you store this when not in use?
A very astute question, my dog loving friend. You are the first to ask.

Why not the Pleasure Way style with magnets and a bug screen?
This was something I needed to do. I have been a contrarian all my life. Herd going right? I'm going left… I do not like the curtain screen. It's ugly and does not operate optimally.
What would you do for a school bus door?
Well, first, I would remove the bi-fold doors and install a solid secure door with a porthole window. then put a nice screen door in front of that.
Can I come watch...then you can do mine..thanks a million!
If I did this lounging about my wife would give me a slap!

Usual over engineering. Snap fasteners and that magnetic door screening seen almost every day on TV.
