I’m glad you brought that up. For a company that was celebrating their 100th anniversary, they had an absolutely abysmal year at the box office last year.
I saw this movie in theaters and I'M SO GLAD YOU SPECIFICALLY MENTIONED THE PRODUCT PLACEMENT. I remember sitting in my chair and thinking at the end of the movie 'Wow, that was a LOT of product placement, like a LOT', so I'm so glad you brought that up!
When guillermo del toro was mentioned i was like what, guillermo, really? That was guillermos? And then ghost buster mentioned "ah I see" the end for me, thank you for the video
The problem with the film is that it wasn't scary. It had big budget special effects but was basically a mild Disney Channel film designed to be as inoffensive as possible. It was not a horror movie. It was just a mystery movie with ghosts, ghosts which weren't scary. It seemed like it was aimed at a younger audience but was advertised like it was a big mainstream film.
When they scheduled this, they didn't know how the other movies would do. Oppenheimer is a serious historical film. Everybody thought Barbie would be for young tween girls. Theoretically there's a lot of audience that would pick Haunted Mansion as a fun non-gendered comedy. I suspect as they got word about how audiences were responding to the other movies, they cut their media buys to reduce their losses.
Gotta launder that money somehow and then declare bankruptcy and take in more money from less taxes! That’s what happened on The Acolyte for Lucasfilm/Disney. This has been their strategy since 2019.
i’m a firm believer haunted mansion CAN be adapted into a good film. i’m sorry but why haven’t disney realized this is a ip that should be ANIMATED. stop motion claymation to be specific.
I'm glad Del Toro lent his talents elsewhere. Disney would never have allowed him to make an actual horror movie. Plus, he made Pacific Rim instead. So it was all worth it. 🤖👍
i really hope we get another movie based on a disney ride thats actually good some day. that or in 20 years they make yet another haunted mansion movie because itd be really funny
I saw this movie on Disney+ last year and thought it was fine tbh. I loved the first Haunted Mansion movie as a kid, so I didn't understand why this movie even needed to exist and didn't rush to go see it in theaters. Still, it was better than I expected, though that might be a product of the already very low expectations I have with live action Disney movies. As an aside, while I agree that there are too many side quests going on, I actually did like the parts with sea captain ghost. Somewhere in the convoluted script, there's a great short film about the main character helping this ghost get back to the sea he's been yearning so long for.
Better than expected because I had such low expectations is exactly my feelings towards it too. It was entertaining enough but it definitely pales in comparison to the original. If it was a stand-alone I think it might have been better received overall if still just a middling to fair movie on average.
I just watched it for the first time and didn’t mind it, I found it entertaining enough but it really doesn’t hold a candle to the original which does make it feel more disappointing.
Still think Leto voicing Hatbox was... ...certainly a choice! I really don't get why they chose him since he could have been voiced by absolutely anyone. Wasn't Jim Cummings or Doug Jones literally right there?
the original film was SO good imo. i remember being hyped for the new one and then I heard nothing about it and eventually forgot about it. still haven't seen it, and even less likely to now after watching this. is a shame.
I saw a post from someone that said instead of live action remakes, Disney should’ve done Muppet remakes. I haven’t been the same since, now I’m just mad it’s been over 10 years since the most recent Muppet film.
you can tell the actors were really doing their best with what they had to work with, like it's one of those movies where if a better writer was able to tighten up the script it would almost be enjoyable.. but the product placements really were so unforgivingly cringe
It’s so funny, earlier that day I was wondering if it’s ever come to cable tv and imagine my surprise that night! I found it entertaining enough but I don’t think it’s a classic in a way a lot of older Disney movies manage to be.
I liked this movie, but I had no idea it came out over the summer. I heard absolutely nothing about it over the summer and I thought it was just a Disney+ movie
I want to point out, this movie is NOT a remake of the 2003 film. It is an adaptation of the same source material. People thinking the movie is a remake of the 2003 is a large part of why this movie flopped in my opinion. If you go in expecting the plot and characters of the 2003 film, you're gonna be disappointed. But if you go in expecting an adaptation of the ride, you'll have fun
i really feel like last year was a big wake up call for Disney. even if they didn’t know how well Barbie and Oppenheimer would do, they still thought that just because they were Disney it automatically meant audiences would choose their remake over the comeback film of Chris Nolan and the passion project of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie. the Barbenheimer trend was unexpected but these films still had so much hype even before the trend blew up. but Disney thought they would be more successful simply because they were Disney. and it was a narrative that flooded into a large portion of their movies since 2019. hopefully, with the new direction of the MCU, they’ve finally learned that a name isn’t going to carry them to success anymore.
They struck gold getting Gore Verbinski to direct the first 3 Pirates of the Caribbean films and they would’ve struck gold again with Del Toro, but nope.
The haunted mansion was the only movie on the 2023 Disney lineup that deserved to do well. It's funny and sweet and well written. Disney mishandled everything about this movie. It's not a block buster by any means, but it should have cost tens of millions less, and marketed better. Should've earned at least 200 million.
For as quick as filming was on the movie, the editing made it seem so disjointed. Lakeith's apartment set was very detailed and only seemed to exist so we could watch him leave twice. The seance room had the tvs and camera stuff that was never used. Other than the living room, Rosario and Lakeith never share any special effects scenes in the house, like the plot never gave them reasons to be there.
I remember getting so many ads for the movie just out of the blue like a week before it premiered and then crickets, and it came out at such an odd time. I actually caught it on cable tv this weekend and thought it was entertaining enough, it wasn’t amazing but I don’t always need amazing just some nice escapism for a couple hours is good. I also think if there wasn’t the original 2003 movie I think it might have been a little better received since a direct comparison makes it apparent that it doesn’t really hold a candle to that movie, at least in my opinion. I think it could have actually been something really good but it was still fine overall.
9:29 LMAO, I *did* pay money to go see it in a theatre, and I had to drive 35 miles just to go see it. But like I said, I'm a big fan of the Haunted Mansion ride.
I always feel like these ride-based movies are destined to tank (pirates aside). Unless they’re actually marketed as new, fleshed ideas to international audiences. I had no idea this was based around a ride, I thought it was just a lazy name. How am I supposed to know about a ride in Disneyland? Haunted Mansion, Tomorrowland, Jungle Cruise… they sound like comedies of their genres. Like “scary movie”. The names are so basic and naked that there’s no mystery or character. It reads like a running title that was never changed. Disney either had to provide context to int. Audiences OR make it clear these are franchises that the audience will find it worth investing in… starting by giving it a name with an ounce of personality … pirates having “curse of the black pearl” meant the movie was clearly to be franchised, but gave a hint on narrative being a key component. It meant to me, as a non-Disney goer that there is a movie about pirates in the cardigan who are cursed by a mysterious black pearl. It’s really that simple. Pirates of the Caribbean on its own is nice but there’s no intrigue. It’s like saying “pirate movie” In fact, I went all this time not knowing it was a ride at Disneyland. I thought it was just a fresh concept. Silly me, how could Disney have a fresh concept! If they named Haunted mansion something like Haunted mansion: terror of the hatbox man Or something else that signifies its - kid friendly - not a mock of the horror subgenre - not cheaply named - has a narrative As far as casting goes, having both Wilson and Devito genuinely made me think that it was a comedy of the genre. The colour in posters affirmed that it wasn’t scary at all, perhaps kid friendly, but it was a whimsy time. Which made me not want to see it - I’m neither of those audiences
Disney overthinks everything into shit. Jerry Seinfeld once said, "There's no such thing as fun for the whole family," and he was right. A scary movie has to be scary and an expensive, FX-heavy movie has to be inventive and original to be memorable and successful. We've all seen effects. They have to show us something new for the audience to care. Disney execs are choking the company into a stupor.
Haunted Mansion should’ve come out in October or even November last year if it did it might’ve been a financial success and maybe it would’ve outgrossed the 2003 Rob Minkoff Haunted Mansion movie. Justin Simien tried to make this film as unlike the 2003 film as he possibly could and that’s not the way to go about it
i just HAVE to imagine one dumbass executive set the date to stream in october and single-handedly made this movie into a flop, it's the only explanation i can muster up
What are you talking about? The Haunted Mansion was a huge success… unfortunately it was with the Muppets and the Muppets aren’t exactly the golden child for Disney in the same league as literally everything else they have.
I wouldn't count Muppets into that, sure it didn't perform well, but it just a sequel to the muppets reboot, nobody ever though the Muppets were gonna make a Pirates of the Caribbean-esque success.
Compared to the OG from 2003, I don't really consider this one to be a remake at all, TBH. The two stories are so vastly different that they could essentially exist together in the same universe and there'd be no overlap at all. I enjoyed both films for different reasons, and admittedly, the reasons for HM '23 boil down to how much it faithfully adapted the ride itself. HM '03 featured Gracy, the singing busts, and the hitchhiking ghosts, but as an adaptation of the ride it was a considerably looser interpretation.
Saw this on Disney+ last year. I thought it was fine. Nothing amazing, but nothing horrible either. Just okay. Although, I admit the original would've been the better movie out of the two if it scrapped all of the subplots revolving the family characters and just focused on the goth romance between Sarah/Elizabeth and Master Gracey. I still don't get why the movie didn't come out in October. It would've made more sense for it to come out then.
Went to Disney World in January and caught covid. Watched this movie during my isolation and rather enjoyed it because it stuck a lot closer to the lore of the rides (especially since I'm from the New Orleans area). Having said that, I completely understand all of your criticisms of this movie. lol I'll just add that I think a lot of people probably skipped it in the theaters since I knew it would be on the streaming service in a few weeks anyway. And I hope I'm wrong... but I'm already looking forward to your Tron Aries video.g
me personally i thought the movie had its ups and downs but overall it was mid but the time of the release was TERRIBLE and to be honest they shouldve released it inl like september 2023 bc it wouldve been overshadowed by the fnaf movie if it was released in october
Totally Real Fact: Jared Leto cut off his head and put it in a hatbox to prepare for the role of The Hatbox Ghost
Such dedication to method acting...
It's Morbin' time.
I’m glad you brought that up.
For a company that was celebrating their 100th anniversary, they had an absolutely abysmal year at the box office last year.
I’d like to see you review The Nutcracker and the Four Realms at Christmastime.

_"It debuted at number 3 in the box office, behind Barbie and Oppenheimer"_
Oh, they tried to go against Barbieheimer? Really? Bold choice.
I feel like any of the new Disney movies could be on this "Failed next big thing" genre. They are constantly dumping millions on awful movies 😂
The Muppet Haunted Mansion is pretty good! At least looked like they were having fun! And Muppets are always a good idea!
How does Leto keep getting hireds for roles
Nepotism
Because we live in a society
@@gag141 He won an Oscar once and that seems to have carried him
He probably gave some favours
Barbenheimer was a very successful Psyop
Good times ❤
True, but it was on top of two excellent films. It wouldn't have worked with average or below average movies.
I'm glad Del Toro lent his talents elsewhere. Disney would never have allowed him to make an actual horror movie. Plus, he made Pacific Rim instead. So it was all worth it. 🤖👍
And Crimson Peak
i really hope we get another movie based on a disney ride thats actually good some day. that or in 20 years they make yet another haunted mansion movie because itd be really funny
I say Space Mountain should get a movie. Make it an epic racing movie in space.
I saw this movie on Disney+ last year and thought it was fine tbh. I actually enjoyed this movie, but then again, I'm a big fan of the Haunted Mansion ride, so I'm admittedly biased.
I just watched it for the first time and didn’t mind it, I found it entertaining enough but it really doesn’t hold a candle to the original which does make it feel more disappointing.
What hindered both Haunted Mansion films was Disney being too afraid to make them scary.
The Pirates of the Caribbean films had no problem being scary
Still think Leto voicing Hatbox was... ...certainly a choice! I really don't get why they chose him since he could have been voiced by absolutely anyone. Wasn't Jim Cummings or Doug Jones literally right there?

They just aired this movie on ABC's Wonderful World of Disney just this weekend! and honestly i thought it was really good ^^
It’s so funny, earlier that day I was wondering if it’s ever come to cable tv and imagine my surprise that night! I found it entertaining enough but I don’t think it’s a classic in a way a lot of older Disney movies manage to be.
perfect vids to have lunch at work! i like you more as a friend than everyone else in this office
Thank you, glad you like them!
damn you're not gonna run out of these for a while, great job disney!
I gotta say, I completely forgot this movie existed. When I saw the thumbnail I thought this video was going to be about the Eddie Murphy one.
I liked this movie, but I had no idea it came out over the summer. I heard absolutely nothing about it over the summer and I thought it was just a Disney+ movie

Man was stalking the channel and I see a new vid what a win!
They struck gold getting Gore Verbinski to direct the first 3 Pirates of the Caribbean films

i didnt even know this movie came out until now. thought we talking about smth from the 2010s

This might be the first example of a remake of a failed next big thing.
You should do The Black Hole! It was Disney's attempt to cash in on the success of Star Wars. Surprisingly a very dark Disney film.
For as quick as filming was on the movie, the editing made it seem so disjointed. Lakeith's apartment set was very detailed and only seemed to exist so we could watch him leave twice. Reason 1 before watching:
They didnt bother dropping it around Halloween
"Remake" isn't the right word. It's a re-adaptation.
Duuude congrats on getting a sponsorship 🎉, about time
I remember getting so many ads for the movie just out of the blue like a week before it premiered and then crickets, and it came out at such an odd time. "I'm an idiot who will laugh at anything"
Same
I actually thought this was going to be about the 2003 film, as I completely forgot the 2023 version was even made.
9:29 LMAO, I *did* pay money to go see it in a theatre, and I had to drive 35 miles just to go see it.
But like I said, I'm a big fan of the Haunted Mansion ride.
How do you screw up a movie with a cast that stacked and a premise with such genuine potential?
I always feel like these ride-based movies are destined to tank (pirates aside). Unless they’re actually marketed as new, fleshed ideas to international audiences. I had no idea this was based around a ride, I thought it was just a lazy name. How am I supposed to know about a ride in Disneyland?

If they named Haunted mansion something like
Haunted mansion: terror of the hatbox man
Or something else that signifies its
- kid friendly
- not a mock of the horror subgenre
- not cheaply named
- has a narrative
As far as casting goes, having both Wilson and Devito genuinely made me think that it was a comedy of the genre. The colour in posters affirmed that it wasn’t scary at all, perhaps kid friendly, but it was a whimsy time. Which made me not want to see it - I’m neither of those audiences
This movie was way too dark.
As in, I can barely see anything.
This movie had everything going for it and still sucked
I appreciate the movie for what it is. I just don’t see why it needed to be an ensemble piece.
Disney overthinks everything into shit. Jerry Seinfeld once said, "There's no such thing as fun for the whole family," and he was right. Tom Im at break at work and thank you for the easy watch
How is this the very first ive ever heard about this movie. Lol. Thats wild.
What are you talking about? The Haunted Mansion was a huge success… unfortunately it was with the Muppets and the Muppets aren’t exactly the golden child for Disney in the same league as literally everything else they have.
Can you next review:
.Home on the Range
.Brother Bear
.Muppets Most Wanted
.West Side Story (2021)
.Spies in Disguise
I wouldn't count Muppets into that, sure it didn't perform well, but it just a sequel to the muppets reboot, nobody ever though the Muppets were gonna make a Pirates of the Caribbean-esque success.
Can’t believe they thought it was a good idea to give Danny Devito a script from the idiot who made Ghostbusters 2016
Compared to the OG from 2003, I don't really consider this one to be a remake at all, TBH.

I never even heard of them, both of them. 😂😂😂
Make „Why I hate Jared Leto” video, and I swear to god, this will be the viral video you are looking for
I Absolutely Loooooooove your content man
Great video, but why do you keep referring to the 2023 film as a "remake" of the 2003 film? It isn't.
I kinda liked Haunted Mansion mainly just for Danny DeVito. Still Muppets did it best
I been wanting to watch this movie but idk lol but are they the same characters as the original or is this sum new ?
Damn, LaKeith Stanfield is a handsome man. Got nothing to do with this turkey, I'm just calling it how I sees it 🤭
Great content 👍
me personally i thought the movie had its ups and downs but overall it was mid but the time of the release was TERRIBLE and to be honest they shouldve released it inl like september 2023 bc it wouldve been overshadowed by the fnaf movie if it was released in october
I liked this movie I don't think it's incredible but definitely not worth the hate. I'm really biased for Owen Wilson though
I really liked the 2023 remake, I thought it was a good movie
Almost like the movie the thing, feel like they made it horrible on purpose. Felt worse then scorpion rock.
13:48 it what’s a completely unnecessary cash grab
What's your favourite Jared Leto movie?
2 min ago is just plain f’ed up
Shame Jared Leto didn't go full method act and when to hell.
The movie was fine it was just disappointing because of what it could have been.
not "mediocre" at the end 💀easy on THE haunted mansion its a kids film
