To be fair, it is more an adaptation of the stage musical, like Roald Dahl’s Matilda was - and Matilda ‘22 was wonderful. So I’ve no qualms with this sort of adaptation as long as it hits the right notes. By all accounts, this didn’t.
The biggest problem of this remake is the portrayal of the plastics. Regina is no longer a complex character but a generic bully. The point of them being "Mean Girls" is meant to parallel how Cady and Regina share the same darkness. Everyone has the ability to be a mean girl. That's why the ending has her abolishing the system.
I was going to say, I haven't even seen this version and she is NOT Regina George. She lacks the power that OG Regina had that was effortless for her. I agree with the cute guy...she is a CLONE of the REAL Regina....and not a good one. Honestly, the singing in this made Cats 2019 and the live action Lion King sound ALMOST decent by comparison.
In the original, Rachel McAdam's Regina was openly charming, but catty behind people's backs. Renee Rapp's Regina is so nasty to everyone, that you have to question WHY she became popular in the first place.
Right!! In real life, her 2 minions would be her only friends, and people would openly avoid her. The whole school wouldn't be trying to copy her two seconds after she did something🙄 Taking that away really was not a good choice.
I haven't watched it because no one can remake the original. But she really just tossed the WHOLE burn book on the floor and walked away? Like the beauty of the original is the way she threw the paper around made SURE people would see it.
That part pisses me off because in the Broadway version she totally does that! And the staging is so cool, like let me tell you I was not aware that someone could make throwing paper around look cool but the actresses playing Regina on Broadway and tour did it.
Same here. I wasn't interested in a remake. No one could replace the original cast and make it as good. Plus why did they decide to turn this into a musical? Just kinda strange to me.
They should have just released a filmed version of the Broadway musical and called it a day. It would have been much easier and cheaper. Plus, we all would have been happier fans. I take comfort knowing that somewhere, another universe exists where this happened instead.
As a fan of the stage musical, and a huge fan of Reneé Rapp and like 80% of the cast, yeah.... They screwed this movie up on several levels. Namely it didn't fully commit to being a musical, which is part of the reason why it feels like a pointless remake. If they committed to adapting the stage musical then it would already be 1000x better before you even tackle the other problems
the only positive i give this movie is introducing me to the stage musical and giving me the original Apex Predator stuck in my head for like a month now
This movie is honestly like if they just copy and pasted the script for the original Mean Girls movie and put in musical numbers to make people think it’s a different version. That “this movie exist” sin couldn’t be anymore correct.
It's not even a copy paste, they changed character behaviors and simplified most of it. Like Regina is supposed to appear nice while being two faced, that's what differentiated her as a mean girl and not just a bully. In this she's just a bully, it no longer makes sense for her to be popular. They botched many of the characters and the main point of the plot.
If I understand the geneology of the "story", this movie is... the movie of the book of the musical of the movie of the book. To say something was lost in translation would be an understatement.
The thing that infuriates me most about this movie is that the costumers decided to ignore the mean girls' rules for dressing... Regina would NOT have been allowed to wear jeans on a wednesday??
As someone who does IT work for a school I can confirm 1) Yes a member of staff would 100% find that book before the students do and 2) Teachers can retire before the year is over(might be different in other schools but in mine it can happen)
Honestly the worst part of this movie isn't that it's a musical, it's that it wasn't ADVERTISED as a musical. As someone who's a fan fo the musical, this is a pretty good adaptation. But why the hell wouldn't you target to THAT fanbase? A large portion of Mean Girls fans just DO NOT LIKE musicals!
There were so many "Wink, wink, nudge, nudge" moments to the original, that it felt forced. There was a literal Greek Chorus during the October 3rd scene.
That is the problem I had when I saw the musical. If you didn't know the original really well, the story wouldn't even make sense. It couldn't stand on its own at all. If it weren't for Hollywood's inability to put forth anything original right now this thing would never have been greenlit.

The music was much better as an actual musical... There were a few cases where they switched who sang lyrics and I honestly think it was just so they had more than two people singing or some bs.

I loved the original film and I adored the stage musical. I usually prefer musicals because you can get lots of characters inner thoughts and feelings in a song which non musicals don't really have time to explain. Unfortunately this remake/reboot? Just takes most of the dialogue from the origonal film and "updates" it to be more 2020's and less 2000's, and then shoves in some of the songs from the musical, and they even changed who sang some things to accommodate the actors, Cady was supposed to sing "Apex predator", and it shows Cadys fascination with Regina and her power and how good it feels to be involved with the plastics, having Janice and Damien sing it adds nothing to the film. Also one thing that really got me is at the party when Regina is singing "Someone gets hurt" at one point when Aaron gives in and goes back to Regina he starts singing back to her and they duet whereas here they just had him staring at her and then they kiss. Why did they bother with this film? Broke my heart 😢
I agree with almost everything noted here but I do have to add that, in our HS, they did actually come into class to deliver candycanes or flowers. No points for that one. lol

For all of you out there who enjoy maths: it's ok, you are allowed to.
Idk, math use to bring me joy when I was in school!😂
3:41 OMFG MY LAST NAME IS SPELLED JUST LIKE HER NAME AND THIS IS WHAT I HAVE TO TELL EVERYONE LITERALLY EVER
6:35 Sin: high heels aren't inherently attractive or sexy; they make one's calves pop. Legs are sexy.
What I learnt from this video:
A bunch = 12
The movie was most certainly not a box office flop. It was made for around 10 million and made over 100 million.
Laughed so hard at Jeremy's attempt at the Lion King music
I was thinking 'What? how did I not even know this movie existed!?!' All clear, now. WOW.
I did not expect the Once More With Feeling reference
PLEASE do The Exorcist: Beginnings next.. we’re all dying for it!!!
This movie is just "We Have 'Mean Girls' at Home"
Hey man, some of us love math for reals. It's fun for us; we like to reason through things. We exist, dammit!
I don't care I love this movie.and I love the original.I love the music in this film. And I like the original stage soundtrack.
Adding another extra sin for this movie existing
Why does this movie exist?!
Who thought this was a good idea?!
The best part of this video is when you stated that men don't care about our shoes.
Hall E fucking lu yah.
“what is that yarn on her face” LOL
What would have been really cool to see is the story of how Regina, Gretchen, and Karen became friends and all that went down with Janice.
WE DIDN'T NEED A REMAKE!
If they didn't have all those lights on at once, you'd have a Disney+ show, where you can see what's going on half to most of the time.
How is cinema sins' archnemesis? (Aka the cat)
WHAT IS THIS?! A REBOOT, A SEQUEL?!
the confusion I felt a full 45 seconds starting this video just because I didn't read "2024"
Because of you, I now know this movie exists. Thanks cinemasins
Holy crap! Did you just quote Buffy Once More, With Feeling?
I agree with almost everything noted here but I do have to add that, in our HS, they did actually come into class to deliver candycanes or flowers. No points for that one. lol
