  • Steeping your camp dinner is often a "wait and see" endeavor. With a cook-in cozy, made of reflectix, you can eliminate this uncertainty and keep your freezer bag food piping hot! Making your own will save money, and let you customize your gear for your own needs!
Reflectix, found in the insulation section of most home improvement stores, costs about $15 for a 16-inch by 25-foot roll. This is enough to make a dozen cozies, or to use for numerous other projects that will be useful in the woods (think sit pads, windscreens, or even hats). The material is effectively, bubble-wrap sandwiched between 2 layers of Mylar. It provides a great radiant heat barrier that's flexible and inexpensive.
You can use duct tape (or gorilla tape, as I've done) to assemble and reinforce your bag, and with a roll going for a few dollars, you could make these for less than a dollar a piece, versus the $10 that most websites charge for a simple cloth cook-in bag.
Using this gear, my Packit Gourmet Chicken and Dumplings take 10 minutes to cook in the coldest of evenings, just like the package indicates!

Very smart. I am a continual backpacker and made myself a reflectix pot cozy and sleeping pad layer as well, but I will now add this meal cozy to my inventory. I am just surprised you did not put a cozy on your beer...

I made a few, but opted to form a tuck in the bottom...it'll still stand on its own, but will also fold flat when not in use. When not in use, it also doubles as protective sleeve for my solar panel.

You can also get cheap insulator sheet by going to the dollar store and getting a accordian style car sunscreen.

Important supplies question...is bourbon ok? I may have made mine wrong.

That is a good cozy, and excellent advice about not ignoring the beer, the only thing worse than a cold camp meal is a warm beer.

The quickest way to ruin a long day of hiking is with a cold, under cooked dinner! Solution: Make yourself a cook-in cozy to steep your freeze dried meals in!

I’ve made cozy’s for all of my stainless steel containers and will definitely be making a meal cozy! Thanks for sharing! I wonder if I was to get the larger size if I could make a cozy for my self inflating sleep pad since it’s not insulated... gears are turning! Lol

They do sell the wider (I think up to 48 inches wide) reflectix at Home Depot. You could certainly make a large "envelope" just like this to fit a sleeping pad. My only thought is that it would be quite bulky. It'd be great for car camping though!

Holy crap. I could sleep in that thing!

+RT Steele haha yes, this one is double in size from a normal freeze dried meal, but the process is the same regardless of size. I've used this one when I'm steeping two or sometimes three meals at once. I've also kept my water bladder in it overnight to keep it from freezing solid.

thanks but i personally would hesitate from adding boiling water in a plastic bag. some think if the plastic is thick it is safe to add boiling water. polyethylene plastic starts softening around 195F (mainly depending on elevation) and boiling water is around 212F. stay health!

nicely done. Not sure about folding flat when you are done though. Stand up is a better solution. ...... Spiced apple? Sounds horrendous.

If it's perfect you get to brag that you built it while drinking
If it's not perfect you can blame it on the beer
There were many cars discussed what might be the matter with them while we drank lottsa beer
