I made a Reflectix pouch to put my electronics and batteries in for winter camping. I put one sock into the other, drop a hot hands into that and drop that into the pouch with my electronics. Stays warm all night. Byproduct - WARM socks in the morning!!!! Thanks for the video! -dave

Thanks guys, in addition to the electronics, I put my small water bottle in a ziploc bag and put it in the pouch, which kept it from freezing. Put your electronics on top of bottle in case it leaks through the bag.

I've been using the toaks 550ML pot for a couple years now and love it. It's the perfect size for the type of backpacking I do most of the time. Then I just put either my brs or alcohol stove in the pot and stick that in the cozy and I'm good to go.

Another nice instructional video 👍. That 550 pot is about the perfect size to drink out of and just big enough to boil water for meals...I think you'll like it more.
I think so too man, if not my other pot is still holding up bomb proof.
I cut a rectangle out of the side of mine so I can keep the handles extended with the cozy on. I can fold them down over the cozy when it’s time to put it away, and it still works to hold the oatmeal packs. Although mot quite as sturdy.
I was debating doing that this time around but decided against it since I pull my pot out the whole way most of the time. I like holding the cozy instead of the handle more. To each their own though.
@@FrozensAdventures for me it’s more so I can put the hot pot in the cozy while holding the handles. The way you use it, I’d probably not cut it out either.
Thank you for sharing, we're planning our SOBO hike this June and I was just talking to Mishap about maybe making a reflectix coozy for our pot & ziplock meals so your video was serendipity for us. Now to go dig that roll of reflectix and aluminum tape out of the storage....
There's a guy on etsy that sells insulated pouches for mountain house meals, I was able to message him and get a custom quart size ziplock size.

I made mine out of Laminate underflooring and a bunch of duct tape (the reflective foam type stuff) that i had leftover and it's been going strong for almost 2 years! i was sceptical about these things but they work like a charm, food (or coffee if you place your mug inside of it instead of on the cold soil) which makes life a little more enjoyable out there :)
Those toaks pots are awesome, i use the bigger one (0.9 liters i believe) and its the perfect setup for the canister, mug and coffee filter holder (which ''spring'' loads it so it doesnt rattle around inside either)

I’ve had the 550 for a couple of years and it’s perfect for most dehydrated meals. When you get 2 cups of water to a full rolling boil the lid just starts to float, I’ve never had it boil over but I’m always sitting right by it and turn it off. This pot and a brs stove is as light as it gets with canister stoves!
Good to know about the lid. Does it do the same with an alcohol stove?
Not sure, I’ve never used one but I might try making one and see if it works a little better in the cold.
@@FrozensAdventures I've had mine spit a few drops out when I wasn't minding it on a fancy feast stove, but the lid stayed on. Stove didn't even mind the shower and kept on cooking
Thanks Frozen! This is one of the more simpler pot cozy videos I have watched and by far the less complicated. Also, great ideas on car sun visors! I do bring one when base camping and it's freezing outside.
The 550ml in this video can nest a small cannister, BRS stove and mini bic. It could also fit a normal bic as well I think. I'll have to try it.
I find 3M 3350 tape ls better. Foil tape doesn't like getting flexed much an the 3350 lasts longer. It can be hard to find and expensive but I just recently finished up a roll I've had for 6 years. It's a bit harder to apply because of the strong adhesive and it's very flexible so don't try to work with long strips. I still aluminum tape for some things like surfaces close to a heat source. I have special cozy tops because it speeds up cooking. A bottom that is fire resistant fabric coated with a combo of treated fabric, ironing board fabric and or Teflon or aluminum tape. Then the duct work insulation stuff on top with the parts close to the heat with a combo. Wish I could show you pictures my description doesn't do or justice.
I'm good with foil tape. It lasts for at least 2000+ miles as determined by my AT thru hike.

I think the trail opened his eyes like it did me. He's focusing on family and doing some hikes. I haven't talked to him in a while though.
I hear ya about the top edge messing up the sipping situation. I started "welding" the exposed edges shut by heating a spot with a lighter for a sec and then pinching it until the inner plastic melted together. Really makes a nice sealed/tapered edge without any extra tape or glue, and doesn't feel as weird when taking a drink =)

@@FrozensAdventures He was right. Don't get me started on the industry's silly hangup with 2-strap packs -- are we all glamping?? Hope you have many many good meals in your 550. I've had luck with both a 3/4" fancy feast & mbdc elite heating the smaller footprint, and was happy to find that a Fosters "Shug espresso" mug in reflectix *just* nests inside if ya squash a few bubbles

Hey Stitch, I just found that I never really use the full capacity of the other pot and figured I never need more than 2 cups for anything so thought I'd try and get my volume down a bit. My other pot still holding up great though.

New to the channel and been hooked on your hiking videos. I'm brand new to the hiking scene and am looking forward to hiking trails in PA. When you started out did you hike by yourself or with someone? Also im thinking about starting with the Old Logging Path hike for my first overnight
I had a couple hikes with a seasoned backpacker and then I started going solo.
If I was a betting man....cold winter months in Pittsburgh, remodeling at the homestead....I'm guessing something is cooking in the oven if you know what I mean...lol.

Great idea! I only have an uninsulated sleeping pad and I always put a space blanket underneath it in colder weather to reflect my body heat back up towards my body. I wonder if reflectix would be more effective. Any thoughts?
Yea I'd assume you'd see twice as good results with reflectix. It's cheap enough, give it a shot.

With the cozy would you suggest always bringing it or is it just more for winter and or windy condition hikes? I did scroll down to see you say you used it the whole way on the A.T. So that could answer this question alone.
I like it enough and use it for more than just the heating aspects, so Yea i'd always bring it. I will try and leave it at home once in a while to see if I can manage. I always tend to switch little things out like that just to try it.

I've had one ever since you put out your first video. Does a small fuel canister fit in that 550? I've been thinking about getting one.
It does! It can also go upside down with a full size BIC on the bottom. The lid will just barely stay on but it will work with a rubber band to hold it.
@@FrozensAdventures Thanks Frozen. It doesn't sound like the BRS will fit in there with it. But not a huge deal I suppose. I could just put that in my food bag or ditty bag if I have to.
Do u store cook kit along with cozy in a stuff sack of some sort? I just got a toaks 750 and was gonna make a cozy but don’t think it will fit back in the orange sack pot comes with
Nope I drop the orange stuff sack and rely on the cozy to hold everything together.
No need to use the orange sack, but if you really want to, the pot with cozy will fit.
I’m actually not a huge fan of the cozy’s while backpacking. I’m more the kind that wants the food/water to cool down quickly so I can go ahead and eat it and move on. Great information though for those that use them.

Can you give me a idea of a good hiking shoe
Shoes are one of those things that you should not take other people recommendations. Everyone's feet have different needs. It took my 10 pairs of shoes before i found ones that work. I will give you some places to start though.
Altra Lone Peak 5 (low cushion)
Altra Timps (whatever the latest model is) (mid cushion)
If those 2 shoes make your feet hurt at the end of a long day check out the Altra Olympus (high cushion)
You may also want to look at the LaSportiva Wildcats.
The more cushion the higher the stack high and the higher probability to roll ankles

I have an off topic question but given your IT background and video editing skills could you help point me in a direction to find out if videos recorded on an iPhone have been edited/trimmed? Maybe even the original date recorded and the dates changes were made? Length changes etc?
Depends on the clip, but if your asking what to edit them with check out Kinemaster or Adobe Rush

Don't really understand why you would do this, so much easier to just dump water into a ziplock and stick it in a insulated pouch. I'm glad I never had to worry about cleaning dishes on trail.
I get what you're saying but technically you can drop your ziplock inside of your pot shaped coozie and it still works that way too. Then you have an insulator for your pot if you're using the pot, or your ziplock meal bag. Convenient if you're a coffee drinker bc the titanium cups/pots let your coffee get cold way fast.
You are creating waste with ziplocs, and a baggie isn't insulated. Cozy servers 2 purposes for me. I used to do it that way but trying not to make so much garbage. This works better for me.
@@MishapAmethystHikes yeah I get it I'm not a hot coffee drinker, I made my coffee cold in a Gatorade bottle in the mornings.
