There is an Alan Screw under the trigger on the shifter knob. I loosened the screw, pulled up on the shifter knob, and tightened the screw above the lip of the shifter shaft. I tightened the screw just enough to where the knob more or less rests on the shaft. I did this on my Liberty and it seems to have created more tension on the wire and solved my problem.
Thank you so much i was able to fix it and free my key. I was having a terrible day and then the key got stuck when i got home. I'm so glad you made this video. Thank you!!!
There is a ( Star screw on a 2005 Liberty) Alan Screw under the trigger on the shifter knob. I loosened the screw, pulled up on the shifter knob, and tightened the screw ( after raising the top of the shifter just a bit ) above the lip of the shifter shaft. I tightened the screw just enough to where the knob more or less rests on the shaft. I did this on my Liberty and it seems to have created more tension on the wire and solved my problem. (This solved my problem also but I didn't have to raise the knob to high. Take off the shifter cover panel but first put on the parking brake. Then pull the shift back to the number 1 shift position. Then you can easily see the screw that you need to loosen. Check to see if you raised the knob high enough to remove the key. Put everything back the same way you removed them.) My thanks go to Robert Cooney for the video & Cayla Stevens for the great input and saving me from pulling out all of my hair. I'm glad there are folks out there that are smarter than me.
This was a helpful video but my fix I found at "'Jeep Liberty Shift Interlock cable and Gear shift adjustment" that the previous comment talks about, the gear shift adjustment. Thanks for the video .
I was ready to break the key off and burn my car to the ground (this is now the umpteenth problem with my 2006 Jeep Liberty), but thanks to looking at this video you got my key out. Reading the comments, I will get a friend and try some of their solutions before taking it to a mechanic! Life saver!
John Kennedy I love my Jeep to death, however I would highly recommend finding a newer model Jeep Liberty... However I don't know what kind of issues those would have if any... I just know I am rolling in issues with my 2006 Jeep Liberty right now.
hey thanks for the video my jeep 03 key has been stuck for a month we changed the ignition switch still the same problem saw your video it took 3 secs t get the key out now I don't have to hear those darn bells ringing thanks alot
Thanx Man....It Worked...although be careful once your driving because you may be able to push your shifter into reverse when your going forward and tear your gearbox out!!
This key thing just happened to me. Twice in one day. I played with the gears from park to drive and it came out, LUCKY!!! I will check out what you said on this video for double security.
Yes, thank you very much, but cutting the cable wasn't an option for me. I removed the center console and found out that the plastic parts that connect the shifter and the metal cable were very dirty making them stuck in one position. I sprayed it with WD-40 and it kind of works. I just have to push a little harder into Park.
I'm thinking that over a period of time using that shifter settles lower on the rod and needs to be readjusted up a bit where it probably was in the first place. probably not a flaw just some of us are a little heavy on the shifter when pushing in the button to move the shifter. Thanks again for the video.
I agree with your line "Love my Jeep ... serious have come to hate Chrysler." Thanks for sharing the info regarding the shift lever indicator bulb. Come to think of it, mine is blown out too. :-/
I got tired of pushing on that cable to get my key out, so I just disconnected the cable at the console end. However, be aware that when you do that, the shifter can be pulled out of park without pressing on the brake and moved between gears at any time, so it is a safety problem. I just couldn't bring myself to spend hundreds of dollars to have it fixed just yet.
You're welcome. I just unhooked my cable entirely. I don't advise this because when you remove the cable, you can just pull the lever out of park and into a gear without pressing any buttons and that can be a safety hazard. I'm only answering because that is what I did with mine. The real solution would be to have a mechanic look at it and replace the cable.
The curse hit me today on a 06' Liberty. Considering the dangerous situation that results it should of been a recall. Window regulator failure is another thing these vehicles are well known for. 😡
I have a 2004 jeep liberty - the key can go in and I can take it out - but it won't turn over to start the engine - the lights work but I can't start my jeep - tried to boost the battery but it didn't work - tried to manipulate the steering wheel to unlock the lock -it didn't work - can you please help me out!
any updates? got this same problem but now the jeep won't start. battery & starter are good, but you know that extra key turn that cranks, key won't budge. Jeep dealer says the transmission recall doesn't affect this scenario.
This video that I posted is for a key that gets "stuck". But I also had a problem where I put the key in, turned it, all the dash lights came on, and nothing else happened. I noticed that the red security light on the dash stayed on. Upon further investigation, I found the following video to replace the ignition cylinder. I needed to do this because there is a pin that presses a button with a key is inserted tells the Jeep security it has the correct key. My pin was broke off, so I needed to replace it. Here is the video I followed. ruclips.net/video/PpjnAS_-IRc/видео.html
Robert Cooney That's it. Shop just called me back & said it was a broken pin. I spent 3yrs just pushing that little cable cuz I didn't wanna pay for repairs, but now the key Will turn power on, but won't turn to start the engine. it costing me $370
Well I am glad I was right about the pin, but Sorry to hear about the cost. I did mine myself, mainly because I am too stubborn to bring it to a shop. At least it will work now!
I just moved the cable manually and then disconnected it. Be careful doing that because once the cable is removed, the shifter can be moved at will - without stepping on the brake, and also in gear. Scroll through the comments as there are others who had different solutions.
@@RobertCooneyOnline Yep, its workable... i have the console loose and i just click it with a screwdriver... I bought a set of Torks and am going to try and take the plastic off the steering column and see if i can spray the WD40 and or Silicone in there its definately hung up... also i will try to loosen the stick shift and pull it up to where it creates more tension. the cable does not go far enough in...
I just had this problem after troubleshooting for the past hour in my car, this ended up being the solution. Is there a way to maintain this so we can avoid going to the mechanic in the future? Is it as simple as take it easy on the gear stick when shifting? Thanks!
I went to Chrysler with this problem today for my 2004 Grand Cherokee and they told me that the cable that houses that wire is corroded and just needs to be replaced its not a manufacturing problem it is just a wear and tear and regional weather issue
@@betzabethsaldana4700 In the end, I just disconnected the cable completely. I DO NOT ADVISE THIS because then the shifter can be moved out of park without needing to press the button. And is can also be accidently pushed from DRIVE TO REVERSE which can be VERY BAD. Again, I do not advise it. I am just sharing what I did. Please be safe.
That just happened to me like half an hour ago. Im desperate looking for some way to fix it. I have a 04 WJ and i've had to remove all the center console to push that cable and make the key come out. Please contact me if you could fix that. I think that is someting in the transmission leaver, but I''m not sure. thx
I had one in the uk a bloody hated it!!!!,the handbrake was a complete joke but mine was a manual. and that stupid rear door ,just make it like a freelander. such a disappointment.

Thanks for sharing all your input. Got some great tips here. Apparently the issue is not only with the 05 Jeep Liberty.
Hello, can you help me
Omgoodness THANK YOU SO MUCH !! My daughter has a 2008 Jeep Liberty so it was different but I did find that button and go the key out Thanks so much
Awesome!
Thank you my wife's 06 jeep just had this problem.
You're welcome.
THANK YOUUU!! i called AAA before I thought to look on youtube, used a butterknife and it did the trick. THANKS SOOO MUCHHH!!!!!
No problem. Glad it worked for you!
is it a safe solution? Robert Cooney said try at your own risk. I don't want to kill myself :(
Adam Wright there is no risk at all. Just pop it out, and stick the butterknife in the spot. Very easy
Just a safeguard disclaimer. ;)
