  • NEW ORLEANS (August 10, 2011) -- Lt. Gen. Steven A. Hummer, a 40-year veteran of the Marine Corps, has assumed command of Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces North here during a ceremony aboard Marine Corps Support Facility New Orleans.
    Hummer, who enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1970, is the first commanding general to lead Marines at the two commands since the move from the former Bywater offices in New Orleans to its new Algiers location here.
    Prior to assuming command here, Lt. Gen. Hummer served as chief of staff to Military Personnel Policy's Repeal Implementation Team with the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, which was charged with implementing the repeal of the Department of Defense's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Among his many operational tours, Lt. Gen. Hummer served as chief of staff, Joint Special Operations Command, and also participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
