There are a lot of Japan only PC-88/98 (and other platform) games that I've seen screenshots from that actually look surprisingly good, for example check out Kagerou Meikyuu (MSX version) if you can, looks like some sort of Dungeon Master/Wizardry-esque roguelike (?) with extremely good pixel art.
I recall reading that Black Onyx was actually the first dungeon crawler to implement some features (though it was designed by a Westerner). I've yet to play it, but I might have to capture some footage from it for an upcoming video. I've seen so many cool looking PC98+FX/X68/FM Towns strategy games and RPGs with really nice graphics, it's a bummer that they're unplayable if you don't know the language. Combining the depth of late 80s/very early 90s CRPGs and Western strategy titles with way better (2D!) graphics and more user friendly interfaces sounds like a dream combination.
