- Well, after being quite upset with the new Lionel catalog, I figured, "How would I want to celebrate the great history of Lionel Trains?" And well, here is the answer: recreate those classic Postwar train sets that many remember so fondly for so many reasons. The first of this new series, we are going to take a look at my recreation of the Lionel 1430WS Train Set, which included the classic 2025 2-6-2 Prarie locomotive. A huge thanks to Trainz.com for having the matching passenger cars for sale!

Awesome video, that is a great set! Great way to celebrate Lionel's 125 anniversary. I have those cars in the silver color from my father, just so much fun to run. That is a great runner and smokes great. Like the way you captured the eunit buzz! Those engines are bulletproof, just a little maintenance and they'll run forever.
Great job, RJ! You've got the original set all together from the 1948 offering. You're a very patient man. This is the way to celebrate 125 years of Lionel in the best way, by owning and running the original set! Looking forward to your next video.
Great job RJ!! I totally understand your thoughts on Lionel’s 125 year anniversary, and their outrageous pricing. Paying homage to the original Postwar 2025 is a very classy move on your part. Well done. I too received a 2025 last year in March, and I got it running, but it doesn’t have any cars. You just inspire me to look for and purchase those (3) 2400 series passenger cars! They look fantastic being pulled by that 2025. Thank you for the idea! Tom
I also love the fact that you are paying respect to the history of Lionel, especially the post war era. OUTSTANDING. I just did a video on three resource guides for Lionel Train Collectors, especially post war!
I’ll go check it out!
Totally enjoyed this tribute to Lionel! The "green cars" as my family referred to them have generations of memories. My Father and Uncle used to swap the cars alternating years then I grew up with them every Christmas. My Nephew who shares the train interest now holds the cars for his family to enjoy. I decided to buy Williams Luxury Lines versions a few years back. These cars hold great nostalgia for me. Although my interests focus on 3rail scale, these green cars remain most charished. Our original cars were with a Turbine steam loco.
A personal favorite from Lionel is the Conventional Classics Berkshire 726 with Madison cars. The whistle on that locomotive is hauntingly amazing.
Lionel has had tremendous products in the current era. Wonderful Amtrak E8 pairs for example joined my roster. I also do not find anything I want in this anniversary book. Maybe an L&N auto rack? I need the break, GGD Superliners loom near. Congrats Lionel on 125 years!
That old horse runs strong!
You have the right idea to celebrate Lionel's 125th anniversary. American made trains from their haydays. Glad to know you appreciate those historic trains as well as the new stuff. My favorite postwar set from the many I have is the 1589WS, because it was given to me from "Santa " in 1958 when I was 6 yrs old. Sentiment has alot to do with it.
Thanks!
No, thank you!
i love running postwar trains
It’s great!
You got my vote. Great acquisition of passenger cars. I've been looking for those myself, and the 2025 is an underappreciated, under valued postwar icon.
Thanks for the terrific video. That's a beautiful train set. I love the 2400 series cars.
Grreat running of postwar lionel passenger set on grreat layout🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Extremely nice, that engine and coach cars is cool.😊 Old Lionel trains always spark interest, they have character, and look good running on the tracks, both tubular and modern.
In the early years of getting into this hobby, I collected a few Lionel post war engines and freight cars. Have them on display behind my tinplate layout. Looking forward to seeing that Seaboard running RJ!
It is always great to see a classic train running!
RJ,
Great post war set. I love the original 2025 and 675 locomotives. And the passenger cars you found look great. Thanks for keeping post war going.
The cool thing for you is the locomotive is based on the K4. 😊
A cool video, RJ! That is a real sweet set, for sure. The Post-war Lionel Prairies were so iconic, back then and they will be running long after these new-fangled engines are reduced to paper weights. The 2400 series passenger cars are really neat and came in a variety of colors. Green, like yours, silver, silver with grey roofs, silver with red or blue painted window area, Armour Yellow and among others. The 675/2025 is a nice locomotive. Some, like mine, came with an unpainted smoke stack. I have a sweet spot for their 2-6-2 Lionel brother, the 2026. I have my brother's original 1948 set, with the silver 2400 series cars and I've purchased a few more, over the years. You can see my 2026 run on my Chooch's Trains channel, which I videoed before I added the third main. Once again, that is one nice set. An excellent video, as always.
Thank you very much! Really cool
To hear your story with the 2-6-2’s
Great idea and great video! I have those cars, but had to go look, I don't have that train... you know it is bad when you can't remember all the ones you have, lol! I could never go all command, I have to many old trains I love. Not to mention, as I have said a thousand times... today you threw an 80 yo train on and it ran... can you imagine in 20 or 30 years if these trains with all the electronics will even still run? I am guilty of it too, I buy fancy trains with all the "bells and whistles"... but after pulling out some MTH 2010 trains and 4 out of the 7 I couldn't even get them to move... you need a degree in electrical engineering to figure out the problems with each one. Two of them I got the 3 clanks of death, so I know those are fried! It kind of make me rethink my collecting. I only bought one train from the new catalog... instead of buying three or four... I think I may focus more on standard trains MPC era and before. I actually think for me, I enjoy more the control of the transformer than punching buttons.
Awesome train RJ. Looking forward to the next one.
Nice video I will enjoy the next series of videos .Lionel I feel the same way
Awesomeness RJ. Love the post war Lionel engines and rolling stock. Great video and topic. I love it ❤️❤️🙏👍🇺🇸💪
I am glad you enjoyed it. I have a lot of fun running these trains!
Actual postwar will always get my attention way more than anything modern even if it is a modern recreation of postwar war
Actual prewar and especially postwar has a charm that stuff today can’t touch
Thank you I really enjoy your shows
At the rate Lionel's going, it's probably cheaper to buy the post war sets than buy the new lioncheif releases.
Excellent choice! I think this is far more exciting than simply buying the latest commemorative sets. The search of finding early cars, the excitement of the find and delivery and thinking about the joy someone else had many years ago when they saved up and first got these same cars and engine. I wonder if the owner had a layout in the basement or maybe these were lovingly brought out ever Christmas and run under the tree.
Iam Glad You Featured This Set, Its One Of My "Faves".
I Like The Way Trainz Packs Their Products.
Out Of The 2025 Catalog The Lion Chief Set With The Three Repop Passenger Cars Would Be The Only One I Would Consider, But I Have A 2035, The Same Three Cars, I Managed To Get That Set At For Half Price Of The Lion Chief Set.
That Harpers Ferry Tunnel Portal Is A Very Nice Accent.
Nice video and history RJ. Keep running those postwar gems.
Great video RJ. I could not agree more with you about the Lionel 125th Anniversary catalog. A real dumpster fire in my opinion. I still have many of the post war Lionel trains that I grew up with including a 2025 from 1947 (aluminum stack version). I also have my 681 Turbine and an AA set of New York Central F3’s. Seventy plus years old and still running strong. I enjoy your content and that you give your honest opinions. Some other RUclipsrs are not so forth coming. I am just slightly older than you (about 50 plus years) and wish that I had some of your production skills. Keep your excellent videos coming. Thanks!
#PostwarStrong !! I do dig some of the MPC stuff too.
Great video👍
Thanks for watching!
Very Nice Video RJ. Great Looking Engine and Cars. With 125 Years worth of Trains it leaves us with plenty to choose from that come up for Sale today. I do realize that the Secondary Market has witnessed Price Increases because of the Current Prices of the New LIONEL Trains. But you can still find some very nice TMCC Engines for a great Price. Some of the TMCC Engines Whisltes and Horns even sound better than Legacy.
Right on RJ.
You’re right RJ, this is the better route to celebrate the big 125. And $120 for 2400s in that good of condition (w/good lights) it’s great. Keep er coming!
I'm glad you liked it!
Great video!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
My dad bought this exact train in the 50’s and when HO was introduced he traded it in. He later said it was one of the biggest mistakes he ever made and said HO was junk compared to Lionel. He ended up giving the HO sets to his nephews just to get it out of the house.
My favorite post war set is the I received Christmas of 1962. It is one of the space and military sets. Still have it. And it still run great.
That is really awesome that you still have it and it still runs great!
Ha! I have that Seaboard set you're doing next. It's been in the family since it was new.
I run modern trains too but this set is one of my favorite I’ve had my 2025 for forever and it is such a strong runner. I wish they made a scale length version of it
Fantastic review of your collection along with a short story for each. Don’t go to trains anonymous (TA), it’s for quitters 😂
Thanks, I am glad you enjoyed it! I am having a lot of fun running these trains
I just checked, and those green 2400 series passenger cars (Chatham, Maplewood, Hillside) were only in production from 1948 to 1949. NOT a long production run by any means!
I'll tell you, I'd rather have the originals than the repros any day! (Especially if the originals are cheaper! 🤩)
One last thing, the original Keystone decals on the smokebox were pretty fragile so it's not unusual to find them replaced. Nothing to be concerned about.
Wow didn’t know they were only made for those two years! Guess I got them at a steal then
@@rj.trains I'd say so! The book I got the information out of was published in 2007 and gave a price for those cars in the condition that yours are in from $90 to $100 each. And that was if you could find them.
I received a 2025 Freight set when I was 10 years old in 1959. I still have it. I know that it is from 1947 by the unpainted, aluminum stack and Baldwin drivers. I notice the Baldwin driver in your locomotive. Does your whistle work?
Nice video. The original passenger cars had the open vestibules with windows which your set has. I wonder if the new remake will have these more expensive and detailed passenger cars and not the modern cheaper closed versions. Any ideas? Thanks john
If I was a betting man, which I unfortunately am, I would be on Lionel making it the cheapest way possible
Trains from the Post War era are SO much better than all of the new over priced, full of electronic stuff trains. Why would you want to get the reproduction when you have the real thing. The 2025 is my favorite engine too. It will still be running great when all of the new locomotives will only be display pieces. By the way, thanks so much for the $10.00 discount at Trainz. I just purchased a Lionel #1001 Scout engine at Trainz. I know, it's a junky engine but I had one as a kid so I thought it would be nice to have to set on a shelf. Thanks again.
I mostly only have postwar here. A few mpc cars and one diesel engine. Prefer running the postwar stuff.
Say, the 2025 tender don't have a whistle? You didn't blow it.
It does, just the 80 year old wiring needs to be tended to
Will there be ground Hogs?
no groundhogs, but feel free to watch it over and over again
😊
Lionel lost there minds😤way to much money. The post war and older trains are going to pick up on sales and collectible
Well I think postwar will pick up on sales because prices are dropping
That engine and cars look awesome on your layout. Great acquisition!🔥🔥🔥👍
Thanks 👍
