The first movement's measured tread, ominous, inevitable, lovely, lonely, leads us into the battle of the second movement; then, the finale, the tragedy, the aftermath of war. That is what I see in this masterpiece, written, I understand, in memory of those lost in WW2. This symphony, together with the first two, represent the best of Panufnik's earlier, more accessible style, before his music became more austere and form-dominated.
This Symphony is excellent. Interesting it sounds nothing at all like Shostalovich, But the emotional temperments are the same emotions temperments as in a Shostakovich Symphony. As said a very differnt language than Shosta. I really like this symphony a lot. It's powerful and grows on you. Im very impressed with this. Worth listening to more.
This symphony's two movements are actually the remnants of the larger 'Symphony of Peace', a partly choral work withdrawn by the composer due to its political connotations.
It's the first time that I hear this deeply moving, powerful and consolatory work. A magnificent symphony. Thank you !
I just listened to this three times in a row and still hunger for more.. What a fantastic work.. My 'new' favorite symphony of his!!

What the hell is ominous about the first movement?
Wow! The more I hear of Panufnik the more I love it. I suspect he may be one of the greats of the 20th century.
