1:36 YES. I don't even go so far as to ask the cashier to cancel the order. I just keep quiet, let them finish their job, complete the transaction, then go back in to the store for whatever I forgot (receipt in hand!) and go through checkout again. If the lines are crazy, I decide if the item I forgot is necessary enough to bother with the extra wait. Sometimes I've taken the first purchase out to the car, *then* went back in the store. Either way, I'm not going to make other people wait for my forgetful ass. The only exception is if I'm shopping with my wife and she can finish the transaction if they get to that point before I come back with the forgotten item.

I used to work retail and I felt that "Let me use every ounce of my authority," line in my SOUL. I wasn't so brave as to use Bob's silent-stare method, but I did tell a few folks to go back and take a photo of the shelf tag to prove it's the price they claim it is. Most people clam up real fast at the prospect of having to go through the line a second time.

Holiday shopping is insane. I've only ever been to a grocery store on Christmas eve once; and have never done it ever again. The store was PACKED. You wouldn't think grocery stores would be that busy compared to big retail stores on Christmas eve.

I used to work a grocery store, and I often worked Christmas Eve, bc I didn’t have kids or a spouse, so it wasn’t as big a deal to me, and I was used to working the closing shift, and holy mother of god, the level of entitlement, you could practically smell it from the parking lot. The better thing to do is to finish the purchases you've got, and go back AFTER the fact. Even if you're the only person and you have to have your stuff with you, as long as you have the receipt for what you paid for, there's nothing keeping you from going back. I stock shelves at a Michael's. One of the most annoying things that I've had to deal with is customers leaving merchandise on random shelves, and especially in completely unrelated aisles. Another is when they think they can just browse through the overstock bunks, as if _that_ won't screw up our inventory.

    • @ryankunst668
      @ryankunst668 2 месяца назад +9

I used to stock shelves in a grocery store. It didn't bother me so much when people left random things on the shelves. Yeah it's annoying, but whatever.
What would really piss me off was when they would leave something frozen or refrigerated on a random shelf and it would have to be thrown out. As someone who is mindful of how much waste I produce and tries to mitigate it, the fact there are people out there who will just waste an entire chicken because they couldn't be bothered to spend 30 seconds walking back to where they got it from makes me incredibly angry.

@@ryankunst668 It's like these people regress into children who don't know how to clean up after themselves.
A couple weeks ago, I had to pick up after an actual toddler who kept grabbing things off of shelves and just leaving them on the floor in the middle of the aisles. The mother was mostly oblivious and only spoke up once after she saw me putting things back, and ofc nothing changed, the kid was still at it.

That's pretty much a common occurrence in any warehousing or grocery store, including Walmart... and its... many departments.
Some items don't have an official location, and we use smart phones to locate items on shelves.
If there isn't a location, we have to assume where the department is, and literally find a sales ribbon or of common pricing to put it back.

I have worked at Costco for last 2.5 years, and the amount of times I have seen people leave cold items out (even when the cold section is just 2 aisles down) is insane. It's one of those things where I feel like everyone should have one of those jobs for at least a year of their life, if for no other reason than to see what it looks like from the perspective of the retail worker. So many people treat retail workers like they're subhuman, or walk in thinking that they're going to try and give them a hard time, not realizing that if the customer is having a hard time, so is the worker. The workers want you out of the store just as much as you want out, probably more.
In cases like yours, I wouldn't recommend it, since you seem to know how it is through your brother.

Having worked retail, Bob is nearly 100% correct on his way of thinking/handling things. The one thing I'd say he got somewhat wrong is don't cancel the order, finish what you've got, then run back and get the last thing and go back in the line again, if you have one item that opens up express lanes for you if there are any and if there aren't, at least where I've been, plenty of people will see the guy with one item and be like ' you go ahead and go first, no reason for you to wait on my $300 of groceries to be rung up first. Cancelling orders usually requires a manager override, God only knows why, and especially this time of year, they tend to be caught up with other things like the customer service desk with a mile long line, so they can take forever to show up for a simple override, holding up the line even more. And being totally honest, I had managers and supervisors who spent literally over half an hour to show up for an override just because they didn't want to do it, even though they were literally just standing around doing nothing.

I worked in retail for a few months. Volunteer position - unpaid to get work experience and it was the WORST!
It was a charity shop (edit:Thrift store for you Mericans out there that are like wtf is a charity shop.) and at first I just restocked shelving products, racks and organised the window displays. That was fun Iiked getting creative with the window display. But being a small shop it got crammed some days and also got people that tried to steal things. And it always seemed like the worst members of society came into that little shop, just the Karen's and Kamrons (the male Karen) of the world came into there to just ruin the day by either being a disrespectful piece of 💩 when they got caught and confronted about something they have tried to steal or get pissy because you are the only person on the shop floor and you've had to leave the checkout counter to stop this one person who has tried to steal something because once they leave the store you had no authority to stop them. If you kept them from leaving the store you can keep them to one side until police arrived.
My young innocent brain thought if that happens the customers in the store would be helpful in helping with the people who came in for the five finger discount by either calling the cops while you keep them in the store or pointing out suspicious people or alerting you to someone taking something... But NOPE!
    it was the worst
I wish I just carried on doing the restocking and organising the displays because being the shop floor check out person sucked ass so bad I was put off doing any retail work for life
    PEOPLE. F*CKING. SUCK

I agree with Bob here when it comes to Wade's experience: just because it's in the clearance section doesn't always mean it's on clearance. I feel people should have enough common sense to check the item itself or to ask an employee if whether certain things are ACTUALLY on sale or not. Customers do indeed take something and put it somewhere else, and not every employee will actually notice that.

As someone who has worked retail: you have to be patient with the customer and do everything you can to fulfil a purchase - if there is a time you cannot help you apologize and call over the manager. I know that may be "insane"... but the job description calls for the cashier or shop assistant to do everything to help the customer - we're not only the face of the company, we also are problem solvers.
If you were in our brains for one moment in time - you'd realise our spines are rubber and have to put up with so much!
Also as a customer - voice your concerns to the retail clerk, feedback helps the store grow! Also, it will help you feel marginally better to have someone acknowledge your problem! I speak from both sides of the counter - retail is stressful and sometimes things can go wrong: please do not just vent online - tell someone at the store you go to so they can help improve the services they provide.

Though this varies depending on how busy the store is. It also helps to make a list and/or your chaperone remind you what you need. I say this from experience because my mom and sister would do this with me.

Okay, I've worked in a grocery store for years. Christmas season sucks, but at least it's manageable at my store. We have every lane open. We're as prepared as we can be. Superbowl Sunday is a whole other story. We get lines so long, they end at the end of the aisles behind them. One day, I was working in the self-checkout area. People are annoying there every time of year. I always get people who complain and say dumb shit like, "Why do I have to bag my own groceries? They should pay me." Sir, we have twenty open lanes. You CHOSE to come here.
But whatever. On this particular Superbowl Sunday, I had a customer come in with a full shopping cart, just piled high. Our limit is ten items, but I didn't even say anything to her. She turned to me and started cursing me out because all the lines were full, so that entitles her to use self-checkout, I guess. I shrug and go about doing my job, but this Karen will not shut up. She keeps cursing about what a huge inconvenience it is that she waited until the last minute to buy her stuff, and we're busy on a day we are very predictably busy. It's getting to the point that other customers with children are telling her to chill out, but she doesn't listen. My manager comes over, and he doesn't know what to do. Half way through her order, she acts offended, as if he's watching to make sure she doesn't shoplift, and just leaves her cart full of stuff behind.
If you're out shopping during this time of year, or any time of year for that matter, don't be that person. Don't be an entitled prick. You're not a tough guy because you decided to curse out an employee who can't fight back. Act like a mature adult, please.

God this isn't even close to how bad it is to shop at Christmas. Me and my family have done this a sum total of TWICE in my life and I can say with certainty that it's HELL ON EARTH! And it was just a freaking Walmart! People were running around screaming, yelling, throwing shit, trying to steal from each other, getting into fights iver some random trinkets, and being just in general assholes! It was like the apocalypse was suddenly upon us! My 11 year old self honestly thought the world was ending with how bad it was at times! I remember there was some asshole who wanted to move ahead in his line grabbed some kids toy and threw it across the check-out aisles so his mom would be forced to chase after the crying kid who owns it! Just for a better spot in line! Everyone turns into fucking assholes around the holidays.

I've had the same problem, but hate more the people who leave the cart on one side while taking up the other side slowly looking around. If you can't see it, move the cart with you and let me and everyone else pass.

I have to admit I have been that person at the clearance rack but to be fair there was like, ten of that item so it clearly wasn't just a customer put it there.

Honestly, it's not even at Christmas, people are terrible shoppers now. Literally today, there was three people stood in an intersection in Lidl (that's a supermarket for those who don't have it). All with wheelable baskets, just having a chat, blocking a FOUR WAY INTERSECTION of foot traffic with about a single foot of space on any given side around them. That or they see you looking at a shelf and just stand there in your way, blocking your view, like they're trying to keep a secret.
And don't get me started on people who try climb up your hole in queues. Ever since lockdown ended, personal space has been a thing of fiction.

I have never felt more seen as a retail worker than I have been now.
Now as to not scare people away from retail, because some people's first job might be retail, it's not always this bad. More often than not there are more people that are kind and understanding, but god it's almost always annoying when this shit happens in my store. People pick up something or an item thinking it's on sale or something, then it rings up at regular price, and then they ask why its not on sale or giving them the discount or something, and at least at my store we can check and see, but half the time I can't leave the front due to the size of my store or because it's busy and at my store we can only have two people working on the closing shift depending on the available hours, so I have to page the manager and ask them which just wastes time. Best case scenario they still buy it, but more often than not they don't want it and we have to void it, which some stores track how much you void and that apparently can cause problems, even if half of them weren't your fault, it's just some dingbat didn't read the labels or didn’t come in with enough money. The worst ones are the ones we get where they'll have a bunch of stuff, but then they'll say they forgot something or left their wallet in the car, leave the store to go get it, AND THEN NEVER COME BACK! Mostly because half the time, they just wanted to steal something. So not only do they waste my time because I have to watch their stuff and wait, because they might come back, but when they don't now I have a bunch of stuff I have to void off and put up, already adding more stress to my day, AND THEY STOLE FROM THE STORE!
I've said this to people and I do mean it, please be kind to retail workers, especially during the holidays. They put up with a lot of bullshit and can' only do so much and are just trying to do their job and not get in trouble. And please, for my sake, if you can't afford something or go out to your vehicle because you left your wallet out there, but its not there or you still don't have enough money, please don't be afraid to come back and let the workers know to take the stuff off. For our sake anyway.

One thing I forgot to add, at least at my store, if a person has to leave the line to get something and we haven't finished checking them out, our registers at least have the option to suspend their order so we can still check out other people out. To my Retail workers that don't have this option for whatever reason, you have my deepest sympathies, because I have been there before (if it wasn't obvious) and it always sucks.

The only time i was a "Karen" about a price was a very nice electric smoker ironically at "Woes." They had one smoker out on the floor for a really good price so I wanted it. They brought back a model that was 2 years older. I argued that this price is clearly marked for this smoker that's right in front of us. We argued back and forth for almost an hour till they finally brought out the correct item WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY taking the floor item away probably to place put the correct one. So i got a "top of the line" smoker for $400 off

The most ignorant thing I've seen a customer do: I was shopping at Walmart and while I was in one aisle, I saw a girl (probably 16 or 17 years old) pull out a piece of gum she was chewing and stick it to a box on a shelf. I looked right at her and said "Excuse me, this is not your apartment! Get that gum off of that box and throw it out in a trash can!" She rolls her eyes, takes the gum off and walks away mumbling under her breath.

I will say right now, in my experience as a retail employee (Dollar General), I fucking hate cancelling the entire order, especially for larger orders. Aborting an entire order is something me and my co-workers hate doing, because then the higher-ups get in our asses for how many times we void items or abort entire orders. So I’m sorry to everyone else in line, but I’d much rather wait for the customer to come back with the thing they forgot than cancel the entire thing and have to do it over again later
Also Wade talking about those kinds of shoppers triggered something within me, I hate those shoppers with a passion. No, I don’t know why that item was in the clearance section. No, I can’t ring it up as clearance. No, I won’t get someone to help, buy it at full price or don’t

I could NEVER work in retail or food service, I'm not the most patient guy in the world so if your gonna yell at me over a price tag then you and I... We're already on thin ice I'm not good at remaining cordial... I would rather stack boxes in the back for 30-40 years and never talk to a human soul then deal with rude customers, this is why I pity people who work at Mcdonalds or Wendys and so on as I imagine it happens DAILY, I don't think anyone deserves that.

As someone that works in a grocery store, inept/last minute shoppers are trash people. Why in the hell are you waiting 20 minutes before the store closes to pick up all the items you need the day before Thanksgiving or Christmas?

  • @ocean_mage
    @ocean_mage Месяц назад

yeah no, it’s almost Amazing how much worse the retail experience gets as Xmas approaches. everyone’s hyper focused on themselves to such a horrific degree that it makes you wonder if ‘good will towards men’ is a fairytale and hope to God that your shift will end sooner than you think.
the Hellmouth has opened and all the demons are last minute shopping. may God help us all.

Wow, so crazy, it was on the rack but it rung up as if it wasn't.
Oh, even crazier, that was the only one there.
And even crazier than that, there's another place with the right price where they ARE.
Yeah, I 500% get that. XD
