Thank you so much for watching!! You can find links to Project 333 and Courtney's website in the description :) We hope you have a great weekend!!! - Dawn
As a result of watching your videos, I donated over 40 trash bags of stuff in about two weeks! You were right about how nice it is to have less inventory. I still have a lot to do though!
my ADHD has been out of control with 3 kids under 4 and i could cry with the progress i’ve made by turning to minimalism!? i love ur videos! keep up the great work ❤️
Iam 57 and i Wish with my three Boys and ADHS i would have know earlier how to make every day Life so much easier through minimalism....clothing,meals,Hobbies....how beautifull Life can be! Wishing you the best in your Journey! Love from Germany ❤️❤️❤️🌼
I get so overwhelmed and deregulated with mess and clutter as part of my ADHD. Embracing minimalism slowly since I became a mum a year ago has made the most massive difference. The more I have the more I need to manage and I just literally couldn't do it anymore even with the best schedules and lists.
Maybe your an HSP, a highly sensitive person? I find this is where I personally fit in , however I'm an extravert,as well! There are lectures on this on RUclips I came across this online by accident! It's helped me to understand how I think and feel about my personal spaces. And I also don't believe in labeling myself, because I don't ever want to limit myself! But it's quite an interesting topic, and one, I highly recommended for everyone to give a listen too! It mentions how we get overwhelmed, by clutter, because we're also using so much of our senses, at once!
I've gotten my parents started with reducing their clothing. They wouldn't start because it was too big a project. I put an empty basket in their guest room, and when they decide to donate, they put it in the basket. When I visit, I take it to the thrift store for them. I'm thrilled with how they have sorted so much even when I'm not there to help!
Once I started having one empty box in the corner that I could throw stuff in whenever I happen upon it it became so much easier to D clutter and get rid of things. Once something goes in that box I never look at it again. When the box is full I take it to Goodwill. It's probably the best thing I've ever done to help myself get rid of unneeded objects
I grew up (1950s-1960s) with five dresses, one for each day of school and two pair of shoes, my good shoes for school and my worn out former "good shoes" that were now used for playing outside. My play clothes were hand-me-downs from my older sister and/or cousin that used to be their school dresses. I guess with that beginning I would never be a clothes horse, I probably have more than 33 items now, but not much more, and we don't have seasons in Arizona so that really simplifies everything when it comes to cold weather items.
I was the same in the 80,s in Australia, we had 2 school uniforms , 2 dresses one store bought one home made , same with jeans and t shirts or skirts etc I had a friend that started university with 3 pairs of shorts all homemade , 3 t shirts , 2 pairs of jeans and one dress . We can definitely work with way less and appreciate / love the things we own.
That's how I grew up, but it made me so anxious that when I moved out, I started buying stuff in order to have spare clothes. And I valued my clothes a lot, being used to having so little, that getting a stain or a tear practically gave me a nervous breakdown. So I buy far too many clothes just so that they don't mean so much to me. Having 30 sweaters, ruining one doesn't give me a panic attack.
I totally agree that keeping a closet full of clothes that are mocking you every time you open the door is something we need to avoid. Really enjoyable interview! Dawn, your style is so relaxed and friendly. You were obviously engaged with your guest and the topic.
I love this. I've been "shopping" my closet for 6 months. If I wear something and don't like the way I feel in it or the way it fits, I get rid of it. This has helped a ton. I work in a clothing store so the temptation is there. Lol. In the last 6 months, I have bought 4 items and that is all. I have gotten rid of so much more.
This is more than just decluttering, it's about being intentional and changing the way you think about what truly matters in life. Thank you for helping me understand that. I'm living a different life and focusing on things I actually care about 💜
My living room has been clean for a whole month now because I finally decluttered far beyond my clutter threshold. This is amazing. I’m shocked every day when all I have to pickup are a couple socks! Getting there!! Thanks for the help!!
We are more minimal than most, but I haven't gotten past my clutter threshold as you call it and reading your comment really motivates me to give it a go!!
Dawn, there are so many reasons we all love you, but one that struck me more today was what an intuitive, genuine, and interesting interviewer you are. Your radio talents are shining through. You have so many talents and skills you may not even know you have. Anyway, I loved this video and was motivated to look at my wardrobe yet again to be a little more loving to myself by inviting things to leave. 💜
They're so right. I started in minimalism due to a clothing size change. I was in transition and didn't want to spend a lot of money on a temporary wardrobe, so I bought a capsule type wardrobe in blacks, whites, and greys. It improved my quality of life so much when it came to clothing that I decided to continue in it when my weight stabilized and I got the next long term wardrobe. Then I started applying it to the rest of my life and things kept getting better and better.
Good idea with the capsule wardrobe for transition! I’m struggling to figure out how to simplify my closet while in transition. I don’t know if I will be able to go back to my previous clothes size or not.
I’m in my 1st month of Project 333 and it really made me step up my underwear. I was not wearing the right size bra and I had way too many of the wrong sized ones. That alone is game changing enough. But I love the freedom and the pace of this challenge. I already feel the joy of all the clothes I gave away to start this project. And I have the ability to “Shop” my closet when I feel there is something that isn’t working or is just so redundant that I swap it out for something else I have quarantined in my closet. I like that I used the 33 items as a “Container” limit so I can slowly prove it to myself what really works for me. I am crafting my own style with this method and I truly love it.
I love having a uniform. No thinking required. Project 333 is what started me on that path forever ago....I've since adapted it to work best for me. Life changing! I once had so many clothes the closet rod snapped. It was insane.
Hi. I love this interview. Thank you Dawn and Courtney. I did project 333 years ago. Cleaned out my wardrobe. Then read Marie Kondo and gave away more clothes. I had less clothing but I still didn't feel good in my clothes. "seasons" wise I'm a winter who grew up being dressed in brown tones which make me look ill. Then I found dressing your truth by Carol Tuttle. Changed everything. I now have 33 coathangers in my closet. Drawers hold underwear, sleep wear and workout leggings. And cardigans. The closet, of 33 hangars is dresses, skirts, pants, shirts and jackets and coats. These change seasonally - I live in New Zealand we have 4 seasons. The rest are put away until I need them. Get them out when the weather changes and it's like Christmas.
I went from part time work in scrubs to full time in business casual. Your uniform came at the right time. Black or grey pants. Black, cream, or blush tops. Done!!
Ive started project 333 and it's life changing, it's really exciting too. I feel so free of this clothing burden. I've got my clothes down to 42 for spring summer, there are huge donation bags and 2 storage boxes for autumn/winter. I've just begun it took 2 hours a day for 3 days and it's such a great feeling. I'm almost finished clearing out it didn't take long at all. Thank you so much for these great videos. I think I had about 2,000 items of clothes and now I have 42 in my wardrobe
The first time I heard you mention a 'uniform' I was like no way. But eventually little by little I bought in. I now have a staple wardrobe of solid neutral color, think black, off white, grey, khaki and jeans. I purchased jeans (2 pair) that fit right now and that I feel good in and donated the ones that I had that didn't work. I have a black coat, gray everyday shoes and a black and grey purse. I can choose what to wear in under three minutes everyday, I feel comfortable and confident. I change out my jewelry but have pared that down as well, as I am from home most everyday. Honestly if you do one thing for yourself this is the project to do. Thank you Dawn much gratitude.
I started with project 333 last year alongside minimising my home possessions also. It was the most liberating experience not having such decision fatigue every single day! I have donated to date circa 85-90% of my clothing and now in total own 23 items of clothing and 6 pairs of shoes. I LOVE the simplicity of it.
23!! That's awesome!! I got it to 27..but I count my shoes in that..which kind of sucks because I LOVE shoes! Shoes and jewelry were the hardest to ditch, BUT they are also the biggest time suck decision wise LOL Great job on the 23!!
I have been wearing the same six tops to work and church per season for several years now. When I mention it to people- even well-dressed women, they are always surprised. One person was shocked and said, “I never even noticed! I always just think about how put together you always look!”
Shawnsee.... I do kind of the same thing for work, and I don't think anyone has ever noticed. Also, unless someone is wearing an item that is eye catching, I don't notice what they wear, either.
@@amybee40, too funny. No, I have a very small casual wardrobe that is reserved for Saturdays because it’s the only day I “dress down.” Two tee shirts and a sweatshirt.
@@thurst3224, right?! I like wearing quality pieces and I like feeling good in my clothes, but this has taught me that no one is really paying that much attention.
So Hi! I've been watching for a while and after watching this episode"?", I decluttered over 200 items from my closet and dressers! What a feeling! I enlisted my daughter's and husband's help to decide. At first, I was set on selling items, you know "because I spent so much money and some items were brand new"! Well after looking at the time involved in selling items, I decided that my time was worth more than the funds I would earn spending time monitoring each item, taking them to the postoffice etc. Thank you!
I am not a big fashion person. There has only been one person to comment negativity about my lack of clothes. I wear what I like and feel comfortable wearing, taking into consideration my lifestyle. I don't go to fancy events. I've kept a very simple little black dress that can be dressed up or down. Simplifying my wardrobe has made a huge impact in my life.
I consider myself minimalist, but lately clothes have been creeping back into my closet somehow. After listening to your conversation, I assessed my closet. I'm wearing fewer than 33 pieces. There is a lot in there that is not for the right season and makes it quite cluttered. Now I'm going to make sure to pack away the off-season items so that my closet is less cluttered and truly reflects what I'm wearing during the current season. The only extra category that I'm not going to include in the 33 is undershirts/tee shirts-- I live in a cold climate and have one for each day of the week during the winter to wear under cozy sweaters.
The laundry thing I learned about a year ago, is that it's more the texture than the color of the clothes to sort by, and it's so incredibly true. I've done laundry by that rule since and love it. I wash all in cold, hang dry for a few hours on an Umbrella-like clothesline set up inside our home that we got off of amazon and just put in a Christmas tree holder with weights, and then toss in the dryer to de-wrinkle after they are just damp. Hope this encourages others to be more energy efficient. :) Great tips, as always, Dawn, thank you!!!
Oddly enough, I do just the opposite. I put things in the dryer for 3-5 minutes first to de-wrinkle, and then hang everything on hangers or line dry. Interesting to read how others do it!
I got so anxious hearing that she washes all clothing together even with towels. I use bleach for my towels. I would be afraid that my clothing would be ruined with pulling because of being washed with other textures. Please help.
OMG..I LOVE Project 333...I've been doing for almost 5 years now. I can attest that it is DEFINITELY a life changer. Because I have 4 distinct seasons, I have a couple items out of each season packed away to use with main wardrobe. I have been riding at 27 items for about 3 years now. I gave up jewelry except for wedding rings which I don't count. I cannot begin to tell you how awesome this is! Thanks for featuring Courtney!
@@rachellehoogendoorn It did INITIALLY..like 4 complete different wardrobes. But after 1st year I learned that I could keep same wardrobe with one or 2 swaps. example: I have a knee length vneck dress for summer. spring I add a sweater and fall and winter i wear it over leggings with a long sleeve on top so it looks like a skirt. I have 2 identical long sleeve shirts that are thick silk so can be worn 3 seasons. I also got away from "what's in fashion" thoughts. I look good in Fall colors like browns etc, so I wear them year round,
@@TravelingwithJenny the key is picking out your very favorite things and seeing how you can make them work thru each season. I obviously don't wear jeans and long sleeves in summer with the humidity, so I have a dress, skirt for year round and swap out 3 pairs of biking shorts for 3 pairs of light leggings (walmart $5 type) for the other 3 seasons. Short sleeves I wear year round. I found that with my down coat and how hot most businesses keep their temps, I am happier not wearing a long sleeve indoors. You'll find what works!
@@jetlakey8066 are your silk sweaters available anywhere currently? (Or perhaps are they a brand that still makes similar that I could keep an eye out for?)
I have highly simplified my wardrobe for about a year since watching one of your videos and it is LIFE changing! I have so much space in my closet and in my mind. I know now what I will wear every day. And the emotional mental clutter is gone.
So interesting! Thanks for including other people who have ideas about wardrobe choices, etc. I am growing a lot from what I’m learning from you and your guests. Btw you are a good interviewer. You allow your guests to share their info without a lot of interruptions and referrals to how you do something. I’ve shared your channel with others because I trust you and your content. And you (and Tom and the kids) are so funny and creative too! Thank you!
And just to be sure I’m clear … it’s ok to share what you do when interviewing. Some interviewers end up talking more than their guests. That is not your style at all. 😁
This was my favorite episode yet. I have under 33 items without even knowing about this method. My motto is take better care of what I have and I will not want more as often. It works for me.
I've been slowly decluttering clothes over time, but this video is giving the push to really assess everything realistically and decide what I need and what I can let go of.
Since watching your videos we have simplified our house over the last year. We are still working on stuff, but we’ve fully simplified our Childrens rooms and every room feels 100% better than it did a year ago. I also asked my mom if she would appreciate it if I got her your book for Christmas and she said she would and now I go over once a week to help her declutter. Thank you so much for talking about family minimalism and inspiring us to have more by having less.❤️❤️❤️
I love Courtneys Project 333. I started it after my last pregnancy in 2016 and will never go without it again. I don't include my earrings, because I really like earrings. But I only kept one watch, one necklace and one bracelet. I use 2 coats and 4 pairs of shoes every season. I have 20 clothes hangers in my closet, so if I want to hang something new or something different, something from a hanger has to go. I donate that or it goes back in the box. I no longer change every three months, but stick to the number of hangers. As the seasons change, my clothes gradually change with them. My sportswear has also become my loungewear. My husband and I both have only one small wardrobe. I know every day that all the choices that hang out there are great. I highly recommend it!
This 🙌🏽 I needed to hear how illogical it is to think it would be SUCH a chore to get new clothing for a changing body. After my 3rd baby, I am placing this unnecessary pressure to return to a size I really don’t think is conducive to what God has me doing in this season (chasing toddlers, nursing, etc.). Thank you for the kind reminders that bodies are always changing and clothes are to fit us- not our job to fit clothing. Since I may be harboring clothing that I’ve had for 10 years anyway and it might be time for a change :)
Such a great point! I’m in the same boat you are! I am a year postpartum with our third and I have clothes that I used to love and fit into maybe after my first child but now I feel like my body is different and I have a tendency to want to try desperately to fit my body into those old clothes instead of embracing my body now and having clothes now that fit and make me feel good!!
I love the idea of just throwing it all in a pile on the bed and picking out what works for me now. I’m inspired to do that soon and a couple of the clothing items I’m thinking of (a couple pair of jeans I love) could probably be purchased in a bigger size and style from where I got them.
If you look at fashion history, for centuries clothing was made to fit us and only in the last about 100 years has society changed that idea and feed us this idea that we have to change our bodies to make the clothes look good. Add to that the pressure of what is deemed beautiful from photoshopped social media and you end up wonder why you feel so bad about your body. I say we stop this run away train and do what makes us feel great!
@@allthingsmotherhood3206 I had 4 kids and unfortunately a husband that shamed me about the weight I gained. Turned out it was a thyroid problem that is very common and under-diagnosed in women in their early 30's who've had children. Get your thyroid checked and don't shame yourself at all, but do be kind to your knees -- you need them to last!
After the holidays I am at my top weight. I tend fluctuate 10lbs I went through ALL my clothes and tried them on. I figured if it looks ok when I’m heavier then it will look great when I’m back to base weight. It’s worked!! Have a lot to the thrift store
I love a minimal wardrobe and I am working on building it out properly. I used to work 5 days a week outside the home in a government office. Very dressy. Now I am at stay at home Mom. I also changed sizes a lot. I went through my clothes, donated the definitely didn't want to keep, tossed the unserviceable. I kept 3 bins of nice clothes in the smaller sizes. For a few years, they have lived in those bins. Honestly I may not even like most of them anymore since tastes and needs change. BUT I decided last November to start losing weight finally. So far, 13 pounds gone. Slow, but progress! I am determined to get back to a reasonable size (not fooling myself that I'll be a size 6 again!) Once there, I will purge all clothes I don't want or need and be left with a wardrobe that fits and is useful every day. I am on my way!
I did the Marie Kondo system on my clothes, twice -- the second time, I got rid of most of my "someday" clothes. But I kept a few cute pairs of jeans in smaller sizes, and I'm happy to report that, after a few years of intense effort, those 14's do fit me, and I am rid of all my 22's and 18's! It's very nice to have a waistline again.
A friend who became a housewife, and now a homeschooling housewife mom, reized that a few sets of scrubs for warm weather and a few sets of sweats for winter were all she needed. Scrubs are amazing, they are durable, comfortable, practical, easy to wash, have pockets, can be worn to sleep in, garden, Scrub the floor, homeschool, but are still presentable for trips to the store. Same with sweats. Her kids basically live in sweats- being homeschooled, they don't have the pressure to keep up with fashion. It simplifies everyone's routine, and keeps the budget way way down, because she gets pretty much everything from goodwill.
Thank you again, after being retired for two years and keeping clothes for just in case, I got rid of two big bags of clothes after watching todays utube!👌
I started a capsule wardrobe by doing a 10 piece carry on bag for a week long vacation. I found that I didn’t wear all 10 pieces. I did the 333 for one full year and found that where I live because we are basically a 2 season weather cycle, having a basic 20+ wardrobe and adding in seasonal pieces works best for me. I love how well it reduced my tardiness in getting places because I couldn’t figure out what to wear. I also really love walking in my closet and knowing that I will look and feel good in every option. Thanks for highlighting this
This was great. I have reduced my wardrobe a lot but I still have a long way to go. When I was working I took great pride in having nice clothes and lots of them. Since I have been retired, letting go of them has been a process. I try to focus on a large size woman finding all these awesome clothes where I have donated them and what a blessing they will be to her. I am determined to go deeper. 33... maybe or maybe not but less definitely. :-)
I did Project 33 for spring and summer (same items). I loved it! I have a few more than 33 for the Canadian winter but am still loving having less choices to make each day
I've been slowly simplifying my clothes by getting rid of any clothes whenever I go to pick out an outfit and say, "Nah, not that shirt" to ask why and if it's something wrong with the piece or I have asked that question before about the same piece I get rid of it. Ever since I've gotten ruthless in my wardrobe it's really simplified getting dressed each week. I'm glad you all also highlighted that you don't have to go all black and white for a simplified wardrobe.
I love the simplicity of this. I have more stuff in my closet and I don’t wear much of it. I’m still a work in progress, but I have learned that I only buy and wear black pants.
Not gonna lie I loved this interview and gleaned so much. I did gasp when she said she threw towels in with her clothes because she is proof it doesn’t mess up textiles - she is always well dressed! Amazing! Love it!
Another thing I do (because I’m not ready to cut down to 33) is evaluate each piece of clothing as I wear it. So if something is itchy, pulls funny or any other weird thing, I throw it in the wash. ThenIt goes straight into my donate box (which is, of course, a donatable box!).
Loved this video! I've been doing Project 333 for about 5 years now and though I am not as concerned any more about a strict 33-item limit, I still love the freedom I feel having fewer clothes cluttering up my closet and the delight I feel when a new season arrives and I welcome back the clothes I haven't seen in 6 months. I really love nearly all my clothes now and have very little guilt or overwhelm when I open my closet. Project 333 has been a great way to approach my wardrobe and it was my gateway into simplifying other aspects of my life.
When I started my minimalist journey, I started with my clothing. I LOVE having a very simple wardrobe that fits, mixes and matches, fits in it's space with lots of room to breath. I love looking at it! Simplifying this area gave me the push to continue with everything else. Thanks Dawn!
I love 333. After getting rid of everything I didn't love, I moved everything into my guest room closet. Every three months I go shopping in my own personal store of pieces I love. I'm picky about adding new items to the mix, mainly replacing core pieces that I wear out. That way I am not getting rid of things I love. I changed jobs and no longer need to wear many of my investment pieces but it seemed to be a waste to get rid of them. This way I rotate them in but dont let them clutter up my closet. Every once in awhile i clean out things that continue to not make the cut. Love, love love this system.
I have been doing this for years. My funny (kind of embarrassing) story happened when I went to renew my driver's license which happens every 5 years. Since I had long ago decided to only buy quality clothing, I was wearing the same shirt that I had worn five years ago. The lady taking the picture looked at my old license then at me, then back again at the picture and said, "Oh, you must really like this blouse." I do and it's still in my closet.
I sometimes skip your Friday videos. I love you and Tom but these type of videos are what I suscribed for. You have helped me so much and you keep helping me. Thanks for this video.
I look forward to her Fridays with Tom. He's hilarious and they have such good chemistry. The home and outdoor renovation and building projects are my favorite.
Thank you so much Dawn - my inventory has halved and my family and I have benefitted financially and emotionally.I am chaotic, messy and impulsive but everything you teach makes so much sense and is easy to do. You are a marvel!
We are officially done having children as of last month! I have felt like my wardrobe is in a constant transition period with slow weight loss and rapid weight gain. This video has got me very excited to simplify my wardrobe once and for all!
I reduced my clothing by 50% four years ago and committed to not buying except for a few pieces. This year, we’re moving to a much smaller house and I find that I still have a lot! It’s so overwhelming! I like what Courtney says to take it slow and easy and just keep at minimising my wardrobe one step at a time.
I did the same thing with all my clothes when I started my capsule wardrobe. I had totes for pant, totes for tops, totes for dresses and multiple totes for shoes. I had to keep rotating all this stuff and started following people who talked about capsule wardrobes and it took me about 2 years to create mine. I love this concept and if you don't think you can do it then start by downzing to get it all into the closet and never have to rotate or store any items. Now I no longer own a dress, skirt, heels or fancy purses for dress. I have a "uniform" which I could wear at work (casual as it was a warehouse) Now retired and wear the same things. Thanks for sharing and it's a journey as now decluttering my home.
Dresses are overrated! 😆 I used to wear them, but now have two boys that are constantly on the move. I have a single dress currently, and decided to borrow when I needed one for a photoshoot
I’ve been forced to adapt to a minimalist wardrobe and like you both said here, it is so freeing. Now I’m learning what clothes look best in my body type. Fun and a real confidence builder!
I finally donated a couple velvet skirts that were way too big because I've lost weight. Even if I took them in, there is no magic prince coming to take me to the ball!!
I love her comment about us "spending so much time trying to fit into our clothes what aren't we doing in the meantime?" That really hits home when you think about it. Some people waist their lives trying to please how they look to others instead of living a happy and caring life. I for one am going to give my all to my Lord first then life with a cleaned out home, wish me luck.🤪🥰😇
I’m so excited to re-do my wardrobe this Spring! I’ve been living in maternity clothes since 2019, and though I’m so thankful for my babies, I’m also so ready to have my body back and a regular wardrobe again lol
I'm doing something similar! I got the same shirt in 5 colors and wear them with black leggings. Then I got 5 thick cardigans to go with each shirt, and 5 thin ones. So every work day is covered for the whole year! I've got 3 pairs of black shoes: tennis, flat boot, boot with a small heel. The only thing else is 1 thick rain coat, 1 heavy black jacket, 1 thin black jacket, and a few scarves (undies, socks, bras, and 3 pj dresses too). Not often used: 2 swimsuits, 2 shorts, 2 summer dresses, 1 evening dress
Dawn, I have just got to say what a great interviewer you are! You had great questions to ask, you listened well, and you didn't talk on and on about yourself. I can't tell you how many people I've watched (just once) use an interview as a chance to just talk about themselves and their own blog--it is such a turn-off. Plus, you have just the cutest smile! :)
I don't even own 33 items, even when I include my shoes. As clothes have been worn out or simply don't fit I disposed/donated, without replacing these last few years. I will be returning to the office soon and if I don't shop soon will be wearing the same two pants and tops over and over - you've just given me and end goal; once I build up to 33 items I know I can stop. I haver never enjoyed shopping, always something else I'd rather be doing. I'm going to challenge myself to bring my wardrobe up to speed over the next month or so, then I can quit stressing about it. Thanks for the inspiration!
Dawn you did it again...excellent, practical and encouraging content!! Thank you for this conversation with Courtney,I really enjoyed it. A healthier and kinder mindset if we could tell ourselves, "I don't have the time, energy, focus or interest in losing weight right now, BUT I can determine to maintain (and not get frustrated about how hard it is to lose weight) and just hold the line where I am now. You are so wise in helping us give ourselves grace. God bless you.
Love your inspiration! I recently de-cluttered about 50 blouses only to count what was left and found I still had more than 70! Holy moly! I’ve come a long way, but still so far to go. 😮
I agree with this. I am turning more and more to neutrals. I am a strawberry blonde old lady but I still have my hair color. I look best in creams, beige, grey, and that wonderful tobacco/ ginger color and camel. I do wear black in the bottom frequently, though.
Yes! And/or defining a color palette for your wardrobe. I have begun doing this and it has made it so much easier to eliminate certain items I already own as well as potential purchases 👍🏻
I had color analysis done almost 40 years ago. The woman I went to didn't go by seasons. After she was finished we talked about the whole season thing and she told me if I looked at all the colors that suited me best they are colors you tend to see in nature in late summer and early fall. Years before that someone did my colors strictly based on season and she had a hard time deciding if I was a summer or a fall. She finally just said I was summer and gave me that palette which resulted in me buying a lot of stuff that didn't suit me. So, be careful of anyone who wants to put you in a season!
Ah now I remember Courtney from the Minimalist documentary! She inspired me then but this interview had me smiling and laughing and feeling so ready to finally try this out! After decluttering quite a lot from my wardrobe over the past year, I would say I've gotten to the final layers...it's about time I take it a little further 😉 Great job interviewing, Dawn! Thank you so much for this enlightening discussion! ❤
Dawn, my favorite line of yours in the entire video is, “So, like do we make our bed and lay everything out?” I LOVE that you know that some/many/most of us do not make our beds every day. 💕
Thank you so much for this video! Around the same time I saw this I finally hit my "I've had enough moment" with 7 years of wearing mostly maternity clothes. I keep growing in modesty which is a good thing, but it has left me with an extremely frumpy and not even particularly practical wardrobe. In becoming more modest I forgot how to dress myself with any kind of personal style! I accidentally came across the website stitch fix and my wardrobe has very quickly been updated with quality, timeless pieces curated by a personal stylist, that actually fit me. I don't need a huge number of clothing items I just need a few things that fit, cover everything that should be covered and won't wear out in 6 months. I definitely recommend it if you are in a style rut, because it doesn't take adding too many pieces to completely revamp your wardrobe, especiallyonce you've culled out the stuff you don't like/wear/fit in like these lovely ladies are explaining. Thanks for yet another creative direction in your guide to minimalism! So many good thoughts in this one to contemplate. I will say that after losing 35 lbs. it was fun to look in the "overflow" closet and find things I had loved enough to save and now fit me! It was motivating enough that I may use it to go on to lose the other 30 lbs I want/need to lose for the sake of my knees, not just my vanity. Spoiler - it is better to lose weight when you are younger and your skin is more elastic. When you lose it when you are older (like me) you look a little wrinklier...
I've lost over 40 lbs in my early 50's and yeah, I have this annoying "spare tire" that I swear is mostly skin, not fat, because I know what it felt like when it WAS holding fat. Thank God for high-waisted jeans, lol.
I love having a small wardrobe for a lot of reasons, but a big one is that we don't have extra furniture all over our bedroom just to hold clothes. :) Minimalism win all around! Thanks for bringing Courtney Carver on. This was great!
Thank you! I attended Courtney’s speech here in Vancouver a few years ago! And I love her story and the small wardrobe is a game changer! It’s freeing to just get and wear what we love. ❤️
What a great interview! I have noticed with age, my style has changed so much.I love higher quality, simple, minimal style in creams, browns, grays and white.I don't do black as much because of my pet hair(gray hides pet hair the best). I have dressed with only 44 items of clothing for all four seasons for the past 15 years. I met Courtney once at her Mother in law's and told her that I wish that I had written a book too.I never thought that my way of dressing, would be a "thing"., but I am so glad that she created such a wonderful movement because dressing with less, just simply frees up so much of your life. I love her books and I love that she started such an amazing movement for Women to embrace. She is as lovely a person as she seems.Warm, sweet and charming. I was more excited to meet her than I would have been a movie star, because I am such a huge fan of her and of living minimally. I would feel the same way about meeting Dawn and Tom too. Even though my kids are grown, I love this channel.
I already see a ton of these comments, but your videos have helped me so much! I continually get rid of more and more things. I love the idea of Project 333, I’m not quite there yet with my wardrobe, but I wrote up a hypothetical all year round roughly 33 piece wardrobe that is my goal and after every season I get closer! Here is my ideal minimal year round wardrobe for those looking for inspiration!: 12 tops -gray sweatshirt, black sweatshirt, black long-sleeve, gray cardigan, black tank top, yellow & black flannel, green & black flannel, 3 black tee-shirts, a Christmas sweater, and my black & gray sweater. 3-4 pants -black jeans, light wash jeans, black leather leggings, & black ripped jeans. 1-2 pairs of shorts 1 black suit black winter jacket tan trench coat 6 shoes -2 black boots, sneakers for yard work & hiking, flipflops, black flats, & black casual slip-ons. Patagonia vest 1 LBD 2 Summer PJs, 2 Winter PJs, 2 comfy/at home pants, & black leggings. My wedding rings, 1 belt, 1 sunglasses, 2-4 necklaces, & my sunhat. 14 pairs of underwear (6 period), 2 bras, 7 winter socks, 7 summer socks 1 romper, 1 swimsuit, & 1 coverup It does really help to write it all out without looking at or being by your clothes. Thank you for this video! Going to share it with others I know, particularly my mom. :)
I think project 333 is a great guideline for controlling the wardrobe from "secretly" multiplying when you're not looking. When it comes to my headcoverngs and scarves, I am not going to limit them to a specific number. I do "general laundry loads" aka mixing whites and darks in the wash - on a regular basis. When the whites start looking dingy, I'll do a separate load for whites.
What a timely watch. I was already on the cusp of doing this and after watching this, I had the clarity to put in a box all the clothes i don't wear these past few years. What's more, I LOVE the message you share, that your clothes needs to fit you, not you fit it. I now have a wardrobe that fits and that i wear all of it!! What a concept 😊
Two of my favorites! I adore Courtney and have been following her for years - I started playing around with P333 in 2013 and have used some version of it off and on ever since. Such a great way to explore living with less from two people who would describe the process so differently but end up in such a similar space! x
Oh my goodness!!! I found this video at the perfect time in my life. For weeks I’ve been complaining that I’m tired of the clutter in my house & how much stress it’s causing me. I have a chronic illness that’s very painful. If I’m hurting severely on laundry day, I’ll skip it or push it back because I have enough clothes to do it. This results in more anxiety, frustration, & feelings of failure when I notice I have loads & loads of laundry piled up in each laundry basket (which I also have too many of). This video is speaking to me so much! When I wash laundry, I’m washing the same pieces over & over to wear them. I definitely can live with 33 pieces of clothing if I really thought about it.
This was a great video, also, your video on building out your wardrobe changed my life👌 I have never enjoyed my wardrobe and clothes so much❤️, when I purged about 95% of my clothes ( I was an emotional hoarder), it was the biggest sense of relief, and also like a sense of shame that disappeared 🌈. I can't thank you enough 🙂👍 Always look forward to your videos 💖
The best thing I ever did for myself - after my husband passed away, I sold our too big house, and moved to a tiny retirement apartment - was to find someone who taught me how to turn my existing clothes into a capsule wardrobe. Such a freeing idea! I stuck to two neutrals, and added three saturated colours for tops and accessories. I look best, with my graying hair, wearing saturated colours, and besides, I could not omit red, purple or turquoise! But it works. Now I need to apply these new things mentioned in your video, as I find I still have clothes I am hoping to fit into....really, I just need to be rid of them! As I also do my own sewing, I can easily repurpose/remake one or two items that are in favorite colors......but it is wonderful to easily find items hanging in my closet, and practically get dressed in the dark, as everything can be worn with everything!
I never watch a video twice but I did here. This topic seriously interests me. I've heard from C. Carver before from The Minimalists but never knew she wrote books ! So this time I grabbed a notebook and, from my sofa, listed my current items and, amazingly, I counted 33 ! I even counted shoes, my coat, gloves and hat and 2 pieces I exclusively wear at home and 2 other pieces I wear once in a season. It's amazing ! And I live in a very cold climate with lots of layers included. Even if I know I'm very minimalist about clothes, I didn't think I had a 33 pieces wardrobe ! I didn't count jewelry, pj and underwear. After that, I went to check it in my wardrobe and realised I just forgot 3 items, including a pair of shoes. Amazing experience ! I'm glad I counted. Seriously, all of you, test it. It worths it 100%. Nelly from France
Great content, especially the point that when we simplify issues like decluttering our wardrobe, we have more resilience for larger issues. We’re not draining ourselves grappling with too much stuff.
This was very interesting. I'm in the process of decluttering and downsizing... I am thrilled to have empty drawers! I'm at a weight I like and I was just given so many pieces that fit so I am really having fun with this! I love your channel and your whole family so thank you for all you do! BTW I love the relationship between you and Tom. So sweet and perfectly authentic!💕
Dawn, thank you for introducing Courtney Carver! I follow you, Cass, and Dana every video and found myself being a hoarder. So, making that confession, I have been trying to minimize my life in small ways. My number one problem is clutter, but the anxiety that I feel is overwhelming to almost paralyzing. Watching this video gave me a new perspective to declutter my wardrobe. Thirty three items gave me the challenge to pair down extremely the amount of clothes I have. I own a small ranch with 3 bedrooms, in each room closet I have stuffed clothing into them to the max, but only really wear certain items each season, repeating those same items weekly as they are laundered because those items are ones that fit or quite frankly less wrinkled. I also have a large amount of dressy clothes that are not being used as I retired and am no longer in the work field. Thank you for videos that are inspiring and entertaining. I look forward to your next video. ~Debi in Ohio
I learned the value in creating a "capsule wardrobe" when preparing to travel overseas for a 11 day trip(carryon ONLY). My travel wardobe has since become the base for entire wardrobe. I never have to say "oh I don't have a thing to wear."
I was working in a bakery and because they were so generous with leftovers and I love to eat, I gained weight... 3 sizes... so, today finally getting rid of all the stuff that doesn't fit me anymore. I'm working on my healthy habits but I don't want to feel bad for my body now. Thank you!
I have always tended to reach for the same “favorites” anyway, and not wear the other clothes in my closet. It often has to do with how I FEEL in those clothes. 1) Comfort, so I can forget about what I am wearing, and not have to adjust to the uncomfortable item at all. 2) If that outfit makes me feel good about myself. If I feel like I look good in the outfit. 3) If I feel like ME in the outfit-I am wearing it, it isn’t wearing me! The other clothes may be perfectly fine, but if I never wear them, I don’t need them. The clothes I do wear also seem to have the same general look or feel.
I am almost 69 years old. I grew up having very little as I was a foster child. I would have to borrow clothes from other children or just wear what was not very pretty. My shoes never fit correctly, and, in the day, we wore panty hose. My panty hose had many runs. I grew up and became able to buy myself clothing and several years of homelessness. I am embracing these videos and this lifestyle whole heartedly; I had a difficult task to do and kept putting it off for several reasons. My husband has lung cancer and was barely hanging on for a couple of weeks. It bothered me and Dawn is right I finished it and my mind was clear. I am choosing gray and black. I have three nice pairs of jeans I shall keep.
Thank you so much for watching!! You can find links to Project 333 and Courtney's website in the description :) We hope you have a great weekend!!! - Dawn
I enjoyed this. I started this before I decluttered and before minimalism, it was the almost the first thing I tried that lead me to where I am now.
Does she have a RUclips channel?
As a result of watching your videos, I donated over 40 trash bags of stuff in about two weeks! You were right about how nice it is to have less inventory. I still have a lot to do though!
Wow!!! That’s awesome!!!!
It's crazy what's possible once you can feel the permission to let go!
Way to go Valarie! That must feel so amazing
That's so awesome! I'm really happy for you ☺
Wow!
my ADHD has been out of control with 3 kids under 4 and i could cry with the progress i’ve made by turning to minimalism!? i love ur videos! keep up the great work ❤️
I think it’s great for ADHD as well. Removes so many time wasters and decision dilemmas.
I to struggle with this! You're doing great mama!
Thanks for sharing this Dawn! I loved the wisdom of "it's not my job to fit into my clothes- it's their job to fit me"! Massive perspective shift!!
This is brilliant and so kind. It can be so painful and overwhelming and you have removed much of that.
I was the same in the 80,s in Australia, we had 2 school uniforms , 2 dresses one store bought one home made , same with jeans and t shirts or skirts etc
I had a friend that started university with 3 pairs of shorts all homemade , 3 t shirts , 2 pairs of jeans and one dress .
I'm living a different life and focusing on things I actually care about 💜
I'm so happy minimalism has a name now. I have had this lifestyle for 20 years. Back then I was odd, now I'm a minimalist!
My living room has been clean for a whole month now because I finally decluttered far beyond my clutter threshold. This is amazing. I’m shocked every day when all I have to pickup are a couple socks! Getting there!! Thanks for the help!!
Hi 👋 how are you doing?
We are more minimal than most, but I haven't gotten past my clutter threshold as you call it and reading your comment really motivates me to give it a go!!
@@Lovey101Dovey cool ..how is the weather over there and I hope you have something to eat already?
I just had a baby and feel the size change on my wardrobe. I am glad I bought pieces that fit my new body.
Good idea with the capsule wardrobe for transition! I’m struggling to figure out how to simplify my closet while in transition. I don’t know if I will be able to go back to my previous clothes size or not.
Oh! Lisa! Thank you! I am swimming in my clothes and didn't know WHAT to do to transition.
The rod snapping!! 😆 I love the simplified closet.
lol. That's how I was until I retired and then, NO CLOTHES!!!!
Six ? So, Saturdays you go topless? Or stay in your pajamas?
amybee40 ....um, no. I think it is more like Topless Tuesday 😂. Sorry, had to do it!
And that one person isn’t worth another thought. Who even has the bad manners to bring it up to someone???
♥️🌟♥️
Great idea!
Oddly enough, I do just the opposite. I put things in the dryer for 3-5 minutes first to de-wrinkle, and then hang everything on hangers or line dry. Interesting to read how others do it!
@@suehellmer8302 yep I do it like you. Just warm in the dryer then hang on hangers spread out. Dries the rest of the way hanging.
Does your wardrobe change much each season?
I'm from Canada, distinct seasons as well
Same ;)
@@rachellehoogendoorn It did INITIALLY..like 4 complete different wardrobes.
Dawn! You just keep knocking your episodes out of the park!! 🙌🏻 Never do you put up something that I don’t want to see!
That’s so kind, THANK YOU!!!
Thank you Cindy!!! I really appreciate all of this!!!!
@@cindylou82kingdom36 Agree!!
I agree !
I "second" this comment 🙂
This was my favorite episode yet. I have under 33 items without even knowing about this method. My motto is take better care of what I have and I will not want more as often. It works for me.
I love interviews. So much to learn from different women.
In Colorado I need summer and winter clothes. I'm glad to hear you say 33 is just a start.
I've been slowly decluttering clothes over time, but this video is giving the push to really assess everything realistically and decide what I need and what I can let go of.
“It is our clothes job to fit us.” Thank you! ☺️

You look so excited and engaged listening to her talk, it is absolutely adorable.
Project 333 is such a well known concept since many years, but I have never known who's behind it. Thank you.
Intermittent fasting 16/8 got me back into a fit / healthy weight. Thomas DeLauer & Jennifer L Scott have many videos on the method. 🌼
Yay! Two of the most influential people on my journey to a more simple life. Love seeing you two together.
I ALWAYS think colored pants and leggings are so cool. Then I buy them just to sit in the drawer never to make it to daylight.
Yep. Black pants and jeans. And almost everything goes with that. :-)
Not gonna lie I loved this interview and gleaned so much. I did gasp when she said she threw towels in with her clothes because she is proof it doesn’t mess up textiles - she is always well dressed! Amazing! Love it!
I needed to hear this!! THANK YOU!! The older I get the less I need or want really . .. simplicity is the key and is so freeing!! God bless you!
Watching this makes me wonder why I’ve been letting my clothing stress me out so much! It’s undeniable ❤
Another thing I do (because I’m not ready to cut down to 33) is evaluate each piece of clothing as I wear it. So if something is itchy, pulls funny or any other weird thing, I throw it in the wash. ThenIt goes straight into my donate box (which is, of course, a donatable box!).
Same!
Two sweaters this morning simply did not work so they are going straight into the donate box
Yes! This has helped me feel much better about getting rid of an item because I know for sure it doesn't work.
I agree. I love the videos that I can apply to my life and my aspiring minimalist mentality.:)
Hi LeeAndra how are you doing?
I’ve been a Project 333 follower for many years. What a great chat between you two!
Hello 👋 how are you doing?
I finally donated a couple velvet skirts that were way too big because I've lost weight. Even if I took them in, there is no magic prince coming to take me to the ball!!
That made me chuckle 😃
I love her comment about us "spending so much time trying to fit into our clothes what aren't we doing in the meantime?" That really hits home when you think about it. Some people waist their lives trying to please how they look to others instead of living a happy and caring life. I for one am going to give my all to my Lord first then life with a cleaned out home, wish me luck.🤪🥰😇
I’m so excited to re-do my wardrobe this Spring! I’ve been living in maternity clothes since 2019, and though I’m so thankful for my babies, I’m also so ready to have my body back and a regular wardrobe again lol
I am to the point now of finally feeling the freedom of less! I’ve been working on simplifying for over 3 years. It is life changing!
Brilliant 👏 👏
Dawn, I have just got to say what a great interviewer you are! You had great questions to ask, you listened well, and you didn't talk on and on about yourself. I can't tell you how many people I've watched (just once) use an interview as a chance to just talk about themselves and their own blog--it is such a turn-off. Plus, you have just the cutest smile! :)
Hello 👋 how are you doing?
I don't even own 33 items, even when I include my shoes. As clothes have been worn out or simply don't fit I disposed/donated, without replacing these last few years. I will be returning to the office soon and if I don't shop soon will be wearing the same two pants and tops over and over - you've just given me and end goal; once I build up to 33 items I know I can stop. I haver never enjoyed shopping, always something else I'd rather be doing. I'm going to challenge myself to bring my wardrobe up to speed over the next month or so, then I can quit stressing about it. Thanks for the inspiration!
Minimal Mom is so sweet, always smiling 💜
I think getting your color or "season" analyzed is a great help for this as then you pick colors that you look your best in.
I didn't know that was still a thing 🤣
I had color analysis done almost 40 years ago. The woman I went to didn't go by seasons. After she was finished we talked about the whole season thing and she told me if I looked at all the colors that suited me best they are colors you tend to see in nature in late summer and early fall. Years before that someone did my colors strictly based on season and she had a hard time deciding if I was a summer or a fall. She finally just said I was summer and gave me that palette which resulted in me buying a lot of stuff that didn't suit me. So, be careful of anyone who wants to put you in a season!
Black is not her color , she is spring
Downsizing my clothes has been the BEST and my favorite part of embracing minimalism!
Ah now I remember Courtney from the Minimalist documentary! She inspired me then but this interview had me smiling and laughing and feeling so ready to finally try this out! After decluttering quite a lot from my wardrobe over the past year, I would say I've gotten to the final layers...it's about time I take it a little further 😉
Great job interviewing, Dawn! Thank you so much for this enlightening discussion! ❤
Dawn, my favorite line of yours in the entire video is, “So, like do we make our bed and lay everything out?” I LOVE that you know that some/many/most of us do not make our beds every day. 💕
I agree. I got rid of everything I could not wear. Then I bought some clothes that I can wear. It’s awesome. I can fit all the clothes in my closet.
Styling is free if you end up buying even a single item that is sent to you. Shipping and returns are also free. It couldn't be much easier 😀
Yep, I agree completely! I have to say, some of my smaller clothes I'd saved from so many years ago fit but not quite the same way! Curse the aging!!
We can’t have it all, but it is fun to fit into things you have kept in hope!
I've lost over 40 lbs in my early 50's and yeah, I have this annoying "spare tire" that I swear is mostly skin, not fat, because I know what it felt like when it WAS holding fat. Thank God for high-waisted jeans, lol.
Collagen replacement (MiamiMD) can help with skin texture 💞
I love having a small wardrobe for a lot of reasons, but a big one is that we don't have extra furniture all over our bedroom just to hold clothes. :) Minimalism win all around! Thanks for bringing Courtney Carver on. This was great!
Hello 👋 how are you doing?
Thank you! I attended Courtney’s speech here in Vancouver a few years ago! And I love her story and the small wardrobe is a game changer! It’s freeing to just get and wear what we love. ❤️
I found Courtney Carver over 10 years ago now, I think! She is fantastic!
Thank you for sharing your lovely review! I feel the same way about Dawn and her family. 😊
Here is my ideal minimal year round wardrobe for those looking for inspiration!:
12 tops -gray sweatshirt, black sweatshirt, black long-sleeve, gray cardigan, black tank top, yellow & black flannel, green & black flannel, 3 black tee-shirts, a Christmas sweater, and my black & gray sweater.
3-4 pants -black jeans, light wash jeans, black leather leggings, & black ripped jeans.
1-2 pairs of shorts
1 black suit
black winter jacket
tan trench coat
6 shoes -2 black boots, sneakers for yard work & hiking, flipflops, black flats, & black casual slip-ons.
Patagonia vest
1 LBD
2 Summer PJs, 2 Winter PJs, 2 comfy/at home pants, & black leggings.
My wedding rings, 1 belt, 1 sunglasses, 2-4 necklaces, & my sunhat.
14 pairs of underwear (6 period), 2 bras, 7 winter socks, 7 summer socks
1 romper, 1 swimsuit, & 1 coverup
It does really help to write it all out without looking at or being by your clothes.
What's more,
I LOVE the message you share, that your clothes needs to fit you, not you fit it. I now have a wardrobe that fits and that i wear all of it!! What a concept 😊
Two of my favorites! I adore Courtney and have been following her for years - I started playing around with P333 in 2013 and have used some version of it off and on ever since. Such a great way to explore living with less from two people who would describe the process so differently but end up in such a similar space! x
Hi Rebecca how are you doing?
This was a great video,
also, your video on building out your wardrobe changed my life👌
I have never enjoyed my wardrobe and clothes so much❤️,
when I purged about 95% of my clothes ( I was an emotional hoarder), it was the biggest sense of relief, and also like a sense of shame that disappeared 🌈.
I can't thank you enough 🙂👍
Always look forward to your videos 💖

That’s exactly what I did, I now take up less than half of a small single closet and have plenty to wear.
what is a capsule wardrobe
