    i am not a downton abbey 'fanatic', but i have seen the shows and the movie and, what i liked about the movie was that it was just like the show...too many times movies made from tv shows think they have to change things and make everything bigger, and that usually takes a piss over everything...this movie was made like it was just a two hour episode, which was actually refreshing...and it was definitely made for those who already watch the show and know the characters...and those people care about these characters, so yeah...it's melodrama and soap opera, but that's exactly why they watch it....

    • @shannon125
      @shannon125 4 года назад +6

      rocky-o EXACTLY!! It was JUST like the show. No deviation. Made me angry because I wanted more!

    • @Unownshipper

      While I agree that they definitely made this movie for the fans (and that was smart as a newcomer would be hopelessly lost even if all the cast wore name tags) this movie differs from the show in one respect: the stakes have NEVER been LOWER! Downton fans love some high-production value ornamentation, and this movie is certainly swimming in that, but it's also woefully shallow and doesn't live up to the show's intentions.
      This movie presents the sort of conflict that people who never watched the show THINK the show was all about: "Good heavens! The King and Queen are coming for tea! Prepare the crumpets and make sure the silver is polished, I want that spittoon to shine!" This seems like a parody, but they play it straight! They hit the nail on the head when they point out that the conflict of greatest tension (the assassination attempt) gets resolved WAY too early and WAY to easily. The rest is a parade of nothing.
      Downton Abbey was always a soap opera, but it was never a BAD soap opera. They presented real and relatable issues: women's lack of self-agency in the world, the struggle of the working class, the difficulty of keeping a relationship strong, etc. But there are no stakes, what happens if dinner isn't perfect? The servants get whipped? The Crawleys lose their home? No! Life has never been more stable for these people. Whether a dress fits or whether the happy servants get to show how happy they are for the royalty... THESE are the plot points of a bad soap opera.
      I'd have liked this movie to skip ahead to 1929 to see if and how Downton will survive the Great Depression. I was wondering that at the end of Season 6 and we're STILL left wondering that at the end of this movie.Whether Robert gains another inheritance from a character we've never met before? Who cares!?
      Thomas' storyline is good, very solid in fact, but it's beyond imagination that (even after gaining a good relationship with him by the series finales) he'd surrender authority back to Carson so quickly. Edith has never lacked agency more than now. She's gained a title, influence, her daughter, and her newspaper, but she bitches and moans about how little control she has over her life. THIS after all her character development in the series is intolerable. It's almost as bad as Mary moaning about whether Downton is too much of a bother to keep going. Even though maintaining, strengthening, and continuing the legacy of it for her son was her SOLE concern by the final seasons. It's a writer's convenience to get her to have a discussion with someone about how much Downton matters... and it's cheap and out of character for her. Lastly, the producers agree that Henry is useless, so they write him out for 90% of the movie, way to go.

    It is pronounced “valet” (with a T) in English upper class society, especially in reference to a “gentleman’s gentleman”. A valet is a man’s personal servant (a lady’s personal servant is called a “lady’s maid”). What Jeeves was to Wooster, or Alfred is to Bruce Wayne. A butler is the servant who manages the entire household staff. He is not the guy who lays out your clothes and shines your shoes. That is the valet’s job.

And saying that it’s correct because it’s closer to the original French...have you heard an English person pronounce the word “renaissance”? Or “herb”? This argument isn't valid. Any movie should be able to stand on it's own two feet. It doesn't matter if some other source outside the movie explains something (like a book, or the tv show it's based off of), it still should be a movie unto itself.

    • @ADTillion
      @ADTillion 4 года назад +9

      Jared Neal While I hold that view for most films, I don’t for cases like this where a theatrical entry is just another entry in the TV show itself. There is no real difference between a TV movie and regular episodes. No one complains about the finale of a lot of shows basically being a TV movie even though it’s a bunch of episodes released at once. Only difference here is that it was released theatrically. But being in theatres isn’t what defines a film. If a TV movie doesn’t need to reintroduce every little detail, then them choosing to theatrically release that very same structure and story in a cinema, shouldn’t matter.
      Again, it was NOT marketed as a stand-alone film. It was strictly as a continuation from where the TV show ended. Same principle with say, the Hey Arnold film. It was released many many years after the TV show and required you to know who the characters were so as to understand the point of the film. Even the previous Hey Arnold film operated similarly. I’d even bring up the Simpsons film, which is lauded as a great film, but clearly relies on details found only in the TV show to explain a lot of the jokes.
      I wouldn’t call them “films based on shows” as much as they are just another installment in the overall story. I reserve that particular rule for “adaptations” of shows. Like “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” or Transformers or Power Rangers(2017) etc. Those are not trying to be continuations; They are straight up stand-alone films with no expectations of knowing the source material.
      Btw, I didn’t watch the show before seeing the film, and I still enjoyed it immensely so I disagree with it not being strong by itself. The acting is superb and grounds the characters and setting.

      @Elijah Kitsmiller you do know that movie is the 3rd Avengers movie right? someone who jumps into part 3 of a movie franchise can't get mad that they don't know whats going on but a stand-alone movie is a different story .... even the 1st Avengers movie tell you who characters are...... you don't need to watch other films to find out Tony Stark is Iron Man.

    You added that Castle Porn bonus round just so you could get the sin count to 100, didn't you?

    The movie was a good tribute/extension to the TV show.

    Only 100 sins despite a bonus round? This movie's gotta be good.

      It's enjoyable. When you love the show. But it doesn't hold a candle to the show, to be honest.
      You're confused on the first episode, start adjusting on the second, get bored through the third then BAM ! Big twist in the middle of that one aaaaand you're hooked for six seasons.
      Also, I recommend watching it if only to watch Dame Maggie Smith dropping punchlines in every single one of her scenes.
