Great tips! Another way you can recover the lines is by using a combination of your favorite tool (curves of course) to make the lines solid black and blow out the color as much as possible. convert the image to greyscale and then make it a 1000dpi bitmap with 50% threshold. This will get rid of pretty much everything but the lines and maybe a spot here or there. Just erase the spots and you have nothing but the lines left. If you find the linework to jagged you can convert it back to a greyscale and apply a guassian blur and add another curve adjustment to fill in the lines, or take the bitmap into illustrator and trace the paths. This is the method we used for print production when we needed crisp clean lines.

This is a useful technique for physical drawings with sketch underneath, as you can sketch and plan everything with color pencils and then draw the final linework with black pencil, ink or marker and clean all the colors. I usually used channels and red and green pencils for easy and fast results (learned this from a Columbian artist, Obsidian).
I think it would be great to show an example of cleaning a document (with paragraphs of text) instead of a coloring book image, as a need for restoring an important work document colored by kids seems more probable and grave to me in every day life :)

In exactly this circumstance, I'd recommend using a Black and White adjustment layer. Float the adjustment layer above the coloured scan and turn all the color sliders above 100. It'll knock out almost all the color data in one operation, leaving just black lines behind. It's usually pretty flawless, but you can always adjust Levels or Curves if needed. It's even non-destructive this way. 👍

@PiXimperfect - When i taught Photoshop, I would literally take a pen and draw on an photo in a magazine, then tear the page out of the magazine one half of the image at a time, then scrunch the two pieces of paper together in a ball and throw that in the garbage can.
I would then turn to the class, and tell them "25% of their mark is awarded for for each fix they can accomplish of the issues with the image.
Many could/would get some but not all of the issues resolved.
I'd like you to demonstrate the same as the exercise uses many of the "fixing" we have to do as artists on various projects.
Not every image we work with comes from a "Free PNG" sitre off the web :)

You can get good results isolating black lineart if you float a Black and White adjustment layer above a coloured piece. Then just push each of the color sliders up over 100. May need some Levels/Curves after, and is somewhat dependent on the source image, but it can really do the job. This can also be done non-destructively using only adjustment layers, preserving the original.
