there is, its way better to use a helicopter and there are plenty of companies that provide the service. unfortunately companies are usually too greedy to pay for the helicopter.
The ship moving ahead provides a lee (protection) from wind and seas so the pilot boat can come alongside safely. A stopped ship would roll with the waves and swell allowing the ladder to swing away and then slam into the side of the ship repeatedly. This particular pilot boat has an emergency basket recovery system on the stern and electronic tracking of the pilot's emergency transponder. Each pilot is wearing emergency flotation either in the form of a float coat or water-activated inflators in his horse collar harness. There are multiple layers of safety built into this boarding process.
Are right I didn’t realise the ship would act as a barrier between wind and tide it makes sense now. I was always worried that if a pilot fell he would get sucked under the ship!! Is that a myth or can that happen? Thanks for the answer 👍🏻
In our district that did happen once before my time with a pilot who opted to not wear any flotation devices. He reportedly said he saw the ship's propeller up close underwater. He survived, but I'm told he retired soon after.
Very poor unbelievable technology to climb the ship instead of this one develop hydraulic lift or elevator or anything that could be safe enough. These people r playing with this pilots life
This is for sure a non compliant combination. Acc ladder exceeds its max angle by far. Ladder is not against the hull. Steps are not horizontal. This is as bad as it gets. Would refuse it. And why doesn t a carcarrier have a pilot door???
Very nice and adventurous.
Shame still using very old and dangerous ladder system for pilot ' should be now any easier safe and fearless

Surely it’s safer if the ship is not moving? What would happen if he fell off? Does the pilot have a safety harness? Great video 👍🏻

Ed Marmol I can’t say I blame him either
18th century's ladders still in use
There must be automatic ladders platforms or snorkels type for pilots
