Hi! I watched this video about a year ago right after reading “The Last Ronin”. Because of your video I have now bought and read all of the IDW hardback books. Thank you for the video!
My 5 yr old daughter LOVES the Shredders Revenge game on my PS5. And she enjoys the Nickelodeon show on Netflix. If nothing else, the TMNT allow me be young again and spend time with my Babygirl
37 years old and have always been a fan. I watched part 1 with my 18 month old last night and thought I really need to read the comics. Yes they're still my heroes. Lol. Thank you for simplifying the order. I was going way too deep down the rabbit hole and read about jumping from one side issue/story to the next and back to the particular volume to maintain order. This seems a lot more doable. Will start with the black and white Mirage collection as I understand them to be the originals. Thank you!
Happy to help! I just turned 37 also, so no worries! We all can love our turtle dudes! Yeah, many can make the reading order far more complicated than it really needs to be. What's nice is the IDW deluxe editions include most all the crossovers and the TMNT Universe side stuff and do it all in chronological reading order! The Old stuff is great because you can just grab the new Compendium that just came out that collects the first 1/3ish of the original series!
This video was so helpful thank you for posting. I bought the last ronin and started last ronin 2 and completely hooked. I was overwhelmed at where to start but this helped ground me- thank you!
Thank you for the kind words, and I love helping people out! Jumping into comics can be super intimidating and I still struggle with that, too. So I'm always happy to try and help others who are curious and/or confused! Hope you love them!
I love the Mirage editions, but the IDW series is by far the definitive TMNT in my opinion. It's a wonderful culmination of everything we know and love wrapped up in a very well written coming of age story. There's something for everyone, and seeing the different dynamics between characters like Shredder and Splinter, or revamped character origins like the Rat King, Neutrinos, Mutanimals and more. I'm so glad I picked the series up. Eagerly awaiting volume 13's arrival. I've had it pre ordered for months
@@brazyfilmo3121 What sets IDW apart is that it's kind of an amalgamation of everything TMNT. Theres elements from the Mirage comics, from the 1987 series, the 2003 series, Archie Comics run, even some elements from Next Mutation, all with their own unique spin. There's drama, humor, action, and incredible character development all around, both for old characters and new. It also has the best origin for the Turtles imo, taking what's familiar and adding an insanely creative twist to it.
Another great video man. TMNT is something I'd love to get into. I know some of the volumes are hard to come by, espec here in the UK. They also look awesome on a shelf.
@Omnibuddy this is awesome as I have always been a fan of the movies as well as the TMNT animated series and the TMNT:Shredder’s Revenge beat em up title on Xbox Series X but, like most characters I love that started off in the comics, I am intimidated on where to really start so this should really help

@@turtleanton6539 I haven’t gotten to that point yet (need to read vol 12-13) but I really don’t think it’ll destroy the story. Hey Mitch! I absolutely loved this video and thought it was very well done. I really appreciate someone else in the FB group spreading the tmnt love! No problem! I really do hope they include the Street Fighter crossover. I think the only crossover that I can think of that they haven’t included was the Batman/TMNT stuff, but they did an Omnibus out of all three of those stories!

You don't HAVE to read the Mirage stuff to dive into IDW, but it is fun to read from the very beginning (though it's totally different canon events). I'd say go for the compendium versions in B&W, as the color classics (at least, The Works Editions) tend to fall apart pretty quickly. Plus, I love reading it as originally intended!
@@Omnibuddy thanks for the reply. As a TMNT fan I just purchased every IDW volume and mirage color classics 😂. Have been in a zone the last two weeks. Today I decided to get all the Hulk omnibus also. Will be diving in on a lot of reading.

You don't NEED to read the side series stuff, it does add some, but it's not TOTALLY necessary (except the Secret History of the Foot Clan, Shredder in Hell, and ones like those. I think those are included in the deluxe editions if you're reading it through those).

Very good question and one I'm not even sure about. The history of the comics are a bit all over the place and in all kinds of collections. I believe most only have trade paperback collections if that, with the original series and then IDW having been collected in Hardcovers. I don't know that I've ever seen hardcovers or even consistent collections of anything else. I'm going to have to look into this more!
Here's the most thorough reading order I could find on it since much of it isn't even considered canon within the Mirage run itself (lol). TMNT #9, 1-3 Raphael #1 TMNT #4-7 Michaelangelo #1 TMNT #8 Donatello #1 Tales of the TMNT #5-7 Tales of the TMNT #3 Leonardo #1 TMNT #10,11 Tales of the TMNT #1,2 TMNT #12-15,17,19-21 Tales of the TMNT #4 TMNT #24-28 TMNT #48-62
IDW collection is great if you're doing the new series. The Ultimate Collection and The Works are both the original series from Mirage (Works is just in color, Ultimate is in B&W). You Don't need those to read the IDW series as they're totally separate things.
The little “peg people” as they’re called were hand painted for me as a birthday present from my wife! Sadly, I sold all my turtle action figures when I was young. So stupid of me!
I really like the color classics but I'm a hardcover collector at heart so I don't want to go the TPB route (they are cool though). I was torn between getting The Works over the Ultimate Collection since they color, which is fun ...but the spines of them tend to fall apart I guess. So I went with the Ultimate Collection to keep it to the classic B&W.
I want to read it, but the new idw series is just so much... And at 40-50$ a book and 13 volumes now, that's way too much. I'm thinking of getting the compendium of the mirage one.
Totally understandable! I'd say to just plug away at it. Use the Target or Amazon Buy 2 Get 1 free sale events (Target's sale is happening now, I believe) and pick up 3 at a time once or twice a year and you'll be caught up in no time!
@@Omnibuddy yeah I just worry they'll go out of print before I can buy it all, that's what happened to me when I started buying hellblazer paperbacks, and now I'm at vol 17 with no reprint in sight lol
Now that I’m an adult I need that gritty story telling. I also think being a 90’s kid you can still have a Batman90’s story telling that all can read or watch. Feel like we are really missing that medium in these forms of entertainment
As a huge TMNT fan as a kid (cartoon, movies, toys, merch), it's strange I never read the comics back then. I picked up the Ultimate books a few years back, however, and have read the first couple. I need to read the rest. As for the IDW ongoing, I'm happy to hear that they're good because I've been buying them all even though I haven't read a single issue. I've been burned on hardcovers going out of print and becoming super expensive before (looking at you Plague of Frogs vols. 3 and 4 😒), so if I'm even vaguely interested in a series, I tend to buy now even if I don't plan on reading for a long time!
Totally understand that. At least with IDW they USUALLY keep the TMNT Deluxe HCs in print. So usually if one is out of print, you just need to wait 3-6 months and BAM, back in print! Can never FULLY count on that, but that's been how it's gone with this series for many years now at least! I'm with you though, I'm a couple deluxes behind on reading right now but I'll still keep buying them so I don't fall behind and can then marathon them to catch up!
First movie was the most faithful to Mirage while taking the color headbands from the 80's animated series. Too bad they fired the director and cut all the darker scenes.
I was talking about TMNT 3 where they travel back in time. I mean, it's not a great movie, probably a 4/10 on a regular scale, but I still have/had a lot of fun with it. lol

OH SNAP! Have fun!💜🧡💙❤️
Bro I loved the last ronin
Oh, dude. Some of the very best TMNT since Secret History of the Foot Clan!
If you don’t mind me asking are those figures in the background the ones your dad showed you as a kid?
The little “peg people” as they’re called were hand painted for me as a birthday present from my wife! Sadly, I sold all my turtle action figures when I was young. So stupid of me!
Is the new Compendium Volume 1 a good place to start?
Great place to start! It’s the original series! It’s the first two or three ultimate collections (IIRC) in one book!
@@Omnibuddy Thank you!
@@JWEntertainment77 no problem!
Can I buy these in tpb as well? Can't seem to find info about that.
There are. Search something like, “IDW TMNT Ongoing TPB.” That pulled up a bunch of them for me. Not sure if they’re all still in print though.
Good luck with that theres gotta be like 50 of those by now. And they dont include the tie ins at all.
Great overview!
Thanks! Hope it helps!
awesome video!!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Such a good series bro what U reckon of the colour classics
@@brandon17760 No worries there! These things have been in print since the dawn of time!💚
Now that I’m an adult I need that gritty story telling. I also think being a 90’s kid you can still have a Batman90’s story telling that all can read or watch. Feel like we are really missing that medium in these forms of entertainment
We do really live in a golden age of content. Seems like we're getting so much for so many different age groups! I love it! :D
Would be cool to see your Big Damn Sin City
Good call! That thing goes in and out of print all the time! I'll have to do an overview of it soon!
Movies not the greatest? You aren't the greatest! That movie is still fantastic.
HAHA. To each their own! :)
First movie was the most faithful to Mirage while taking the color headbands from the 80's animated series. Too bad they fired the director and cut all the darker scenes.
😊😊
💚💚
Love❤❤❤❤love❤😂🎉😢😮😅
:D TMNT is the best!
1:38 WRONG!!! the 1990 movie is still great.
I was talking about TMNT 3 where they travel back in time. I mean, it's not a great movie, probably a 4/10 on a regular scale, but I still have/had a lot of fun with it. lol
Oh yeah, your right that movie sucked, even as a kid lol. Somehow I missed you say that. The first one is great though
@adamwilson1691 HAHA. All good!
