I think what you are saying is true for most of tech tbh 😅 especially since UX unlike other jobs in tech requires an in depth portfolio. Every year is a "bad year" to get in.

I wish I had started earlier but I’m glad I’m getting into the industry now since it’s still a relatively young one
Recessions come and go and companies go up and down with layoffs and surges in hiring all the time due to economic factors
However this is an industry that will be in demand for a long time to come so I’m confident that we can weather any economic downturns
Covid only further proved the society’s reliance on digital products, i think that will lead to even more ux positions opening up
Agreed. I think it’ll be most helpful to make sure we have multiple skills under our belt so that we can adapt to the changes and industry needs as they come

I agree this is a very bad time to become a UX Designer, especially for those just finish bootcamps or certification programs.
I highly recommend applying jobs thru job agencies, being option to short term or long term contract, and keep looking for your UX opportunities.
I spoke with an agency that just helped me land a senior role, and he told me typically they no longer hire non-experience UX Designers because how competitive the market is.
However, he also said you just need to keep trying...
I had nearly 20 interviews until I got a new UX job so... the progress isn't easy.. keep your head up and work hard!

I'm in DL UXA right now part-time while working my reg 9-5 corporate job and tbh I'm chillin right now and not in any rush to start applying for UX jobs quite yet. Could I do it faster? Yeah. Will I be making the transition later compared to others? Probably. Will I regret taking my sweet time? Maybe, tho it doesn't matter cuz my priority is to make a MEANINGFUL career transition and not a rushed one! Agree that it's understanding where you're at right now (life-wise/financially/mentally/etc.) and what is feasible for you. I also say this to remind myself LOL

Yes it is a bad time, I've been working remotely as a web designer, had clients and then a war started in Ukraine, I've lost my home and PC I've been working from, tried to find a job in Europe and nothing, even with years of my experience. Now I will be switching to web developer, it should be easy to find, plus i have CS degree and my husband is working as a web dev, saying people from his company keep finding even better offers and leaving
I think you should go the self taught route. Start off working freelance and build up portfolio so that instead of starting off as entry level you have more experience to go for higher up.
I’m still in my UX academy right now trying to do my projects on the side after my regular job. Hard to find the motivation but still want this career change! But I know it’s still a struggle and have to keep learning if I want it!

Honestly as someone who recently broke into this industry I've been advising against it to anyone who asks. It has been one of the hardest things I've ever done - you REALLY have to want it. And even if you're a super talented up-and-coming designer, it's near impossible to get your foot in the door and stand out among the sea of bootcamp grads. I had to leverage my network hard to land my first internship and now current FT role. There was no way I could've done this otherwise.
I think in a few years from now we as an industry will look back at how harmful the bootcamp explosion was to the craft of UX. As a bootcamp grad myself, I attended one of the better bootcamps on the market and I still didn't feel fully prepared when I started my internship - so much learning on the job. I see the portfolios of some of the lesser known bootcamp grads and I just... 😬
Which bootcamp did you do?
I recently obtained a college diploma in Web Design & Development, had an internship with a company who was not making any money and could not take me on full time, made a ton of projects to display my skill level, created a few websites that made some family and friends some money, and I would say applied to over 100+ jobs for an entry level position, joined Upwork and others. The result? Still jobless and feeling like I made a huge mistake getting into this. While I absolutely love the idea of this for a career it's definitely over saturated like you mentioned.
Wow, you offered by far the most realistic career advice right now. I am about to obtain a google UX Design certificate, although it is cheap, I hope it is worth it.

Hahahaha. The way you said your rant was funny because I can relate. I also believe that UX design is really important, and the knowledge you'll be learning from here can be very essential in your everyday life, and everything around you. Thank you for sharing! ❤️
I think something really important to talk about here is that it's more important to cultivate "learning agility." By that I mean the ability to pick up new tools, procedures and methods without getting stagnant and stubbornly hanging onto old ideas. For example everyone inside my work just freaked out hard last week because of Adobe buying Figma. The fact of the matter is that tools come and go. YOU and your skills to work with the current crop of tools, whatever they may be, is what counts. Throughout your career, you'll see methods come and go depending on how mature the organization you're with is in terms of UX. You have to have the ability to be your own process advocate, and that takes an ability to speak truthfully to powerful people who may not know what UX actually is or what it's for. But making your own case is really up to you. It's very nice when help comes from outside, but you can't count on others to prop you up. Learning to speak truth to power, but doing it in a way that is tactful enough that you don't get fired for it may actually be the most valuable skill in this field as of this writing. I'm in DL Foundations right now and doing it part-time. I'm not in a rush and possibly finish by next spring with the UXA. I'm okay with staying with my job for now cause it's cushy and I know at some point I will need experience so I'm taking it one step at a time. Possibly the company I'm working at right now may need one so I'm staying until I can pitch myself and get my first UX job (cause I can tell we need it badly)
I’m in the exact same position! I’m currently in DL Foundations hoping to finish the full program by next spring. I’m a PM at a smaller tech company hoping to transition to a UX position at my current job before trying to look for a position externally. It definitely seems like a smart move
I took on learning how to trade after completing the first half of my boot camp for UX and UI. I have 1 more month left. I was working in Starbucks, now I got a job at a club. It’s exciting! I’m having fun, to me- that’s all that matters. I already had digital media and content creation under my belt since 2016 as a teen, so it’s so smooth.
I'm changing careers right now (not to UX but to motion design) and my biggest fear is getting hired, putting in my notice, and then getting my job offer pulled back. I feel like no time since 2020 has been the right time. None of this makes sense and it probably never will so I've just gotta go for it!

Went full-time with DL in April. The reality for me was that with mandatory overtime, the part-time course wasn't going to be possible. I barely did Foundations part-time while working full-time. I'm kind of past a point of no return. I'm hoping that with some previous design and coding experience that I'll still find a place to land.

Thanks for this video. I’m working as an IT recruiter, but I wanted to go i UX since university. I constantly receive job opportunities for recruitment position but it is not what I wanna do in the future. People around me telling "just take this new job and you will have more money" or "you don’t know when you will find a ux job, stay in recruitment" and it started to be so overwhelming. But after watching this video it just gave me calmness that if I wanna do it a can do it even everyone talking that this is the worst time.

Considering that I'm making less than half of what a McDonalds employee makes working as a full time graphic designer, living in the city with the third highest rate of unemployment in my country, I think a UX design position would be a huge step forward. You mentioned in some other videos that you live in San Diego, which I've heard is a very expensive place to live. I'm not typing this to contradict you or anything, your videos are great help. I just thought I'd mention it because living situations can be pretty different around the world; and there's probably a lot of people who have it even worse than me, sadly.
I’m thinking a lot about saturation and I feel like it’s also important to consider demographic saturation (or lack thereof). Yes, there are a lot of women pouring into UX/UI but what’s the percentage of them who fit my description? I’m from a really small minority group and I think people like me (black, muslim women) need to take up more space in tech.
A lot of careers have high saturation. There's just too many people out there.

I’m a senior in college studying informatics which is a mix between CS and HCI I want to become a designer after I graduate but I’m afraid due to the amount of people currently trying to become one either out of school like me or career switchers. Another thing is I’m afraid to make a career out of it due to designers being less important then other parts of a company which makes designers the first group to be laid off in any event.
If you are good in with data and informatics, you should stick with it.

Are there any expanding niches in UX design? Or hybrid jobs? I have some programming/machine learning skills and I tend to be a good writer. I'm wondering if that would make stand out in the UX design field or if it would be more like something nice to know but not really relevant.
Not sure but since you said programming a good grasp on HTML,CSS and JavaScript script makes you a competitive candidate as a Junior designer -especially to smaller tech startups. And if you have a flair for writing you can niche down to UX Researcher/Writer at some point

Are you just referring to the US jobs market? In my country there are skills shortages so they fund free bootcamps including ones in UX UI Design and all the other tech roles. I've just provisionally been offered a place on a bootcamp. I'm hoping here there will be jobs at the end. Since its free it seems like a good opportunity to open up the jobs I might be able to get.

So on the subject of possibly not getting paid after you finish boot camp, around how much would you suggest having saved post Boot Camp?
Honestly the economy is gonna get so bad that majority of people will lose their jobs.... So I say go for it become a UX designer because in the end it won't matter

Hi Minju! Great question, I've actually applied to a few of those UX internship programs that are geared to more college grads and to be honest, I never heard anything back. That's just been my experience though!
I got laid off in march, managed to get a job offer to start in September. They reassured me that they won’t rescind the offer. I hope they don’t otherwise I’m screwed

Hi Dan! Great question, there's a lot of overlap between the two tracks, but UX Research is more specialized and narrows into a certain stage of the design process. Since I'm not a UX Researcher, I can't speak to it in depth so I suggest you watch a few of Aona's videos.

She was 30 when she finished bootcamp. I'm 32 I don't think people are focusing on age. Maybe if your gray haired and have a walker they might be skeptical of your skills

lol dude 6 months of savings is not even a lot, people should have a years worth of savings, have investments and assets. If you dont even have that set up, go work a shitty job until you can save up at least 6 months.
Yeah I know everyone has diff responsibilites , but dude 6 months is a basic requirement to be an adult. Stop spending on useless things and downgrade your life , cook , don't go out , stop buying clothes u don't need , new tech etc

What about front end web developer?
Hi! I can’t confidently speak to the dev market since I don’t have much exposure to that world like I do with UX design!
Front end development is always needed. These are the basis if design and understanding html, css and Javascript. The core designs whereas a ux designer isn't specializing in front end dev. So web designers who know htmk and css and can do both UI and UX is the highest benefit too.
